This has been buging me for a long time.  When I was a child, Washington's and Lincoln's birthdays were days of celebretion of the 2 greatest presidents this country had.  We had the day off from school, governments shut down in honor of the two.  We all had to do projects about both presidents before their b-days.

Then they created MLK Day and lumped Washington and Lincoln days into "Presidents' Day".  Face it.... we've had some lousy presidents that do not deserve to be honored... the Bushs come to mind... MLK Day was declared a legal holiday... governements "shut down", kids got the day off from school, etc.  MLK was a good man... but....   Presidents' Day is pretty much unobserved except for eastern Hillsborough county that let's the kids out of school for a day at the Strawberry Festival.

Am I the only one to think that something is very wrong here?

You are not the only one.

MLK is for some reason, a bigger hero to this nation than either George Washington, or even Abraham Lincoln who made MLK even possible.

That is now forgotten, and we have a MLK holiday. Black history month should at least include Lincoln.

But nah. He is nobody today.

Why is it that I can go to any city in America, find a MLK BLVD and buy crack. When I can walk down MLK BLVD with out fear of getting mugged, propisitioned by a hooker or have someone try to sell me drugs I will then know that Martin L Kings dream is real.
The only reason we have MLK as a holiday is because we were extorted by the likes of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson (Poverty Pimps).

great comments gang. Now that I think about it, Neck is correct. None of the streets renamed for MLK have good reps. King's dream is turning into a nightmare.

It's probably a question of "what have you done for me lately". The 2 folks I feel that did the most in recent times in easing tensions here were Dr. King and LBJ. Let's not belittle their efforts as everyone was affected in a positive manner by their actions regarding civil rights.

Anyone fly the stars and bars on June 1st?

Vittorio... I agree about not belittling their effects on civil rights. It's the people that came after who have done the most damage. A black man will be hired before a white or black woman even if the women are more qualified for the job. I see that all the time. See my other blog on Black Heritage Month... what about Woman Appreciation Month with celebrations in the park, or Senior Citizen Month with a celebration in the park...Senior Citizen Month gets a banner in the lobby of the County Center. If it wasn't for the women and the senior citizens, none of us would be here. But, that is another subject...

That Abe Lincoln did so much to free the slaves and change the US and then have his b-day holiday taken away by the institution of MLK Day is such a shame.

I can't argue with the bad effects of affirmative action. I had no idea that George and Abe had to give way due to Dr. King. This is the first time I've heard that.

We certainly can go too far with our custom of honoring people, peoples, and events with holidays. It's getting to be a question of where to draw the line.

Something of interest... In 1968, Congress passed the Monday Holidays Act, which moved the official observance of Washington's birthday from Feb. 22 to the third Monday in February. Some reformers had wanted to change the name of the holiday as well, to Presidents' Day, in honor of both Lincoln and Washington, but that proposal was rejected by Congress, and the holiday remained officially Washington's Birthday.

Nevertheless, there was a popular misconception that the day had been officially renamed, a misconception only reinforced by the fact that the third Monday in February can only occur between Feb. 15 and Feb. 21. This means that the holiday is always after Lincoln's birthday and before Washington's birthday, without ever coinciding with either. Furthermore, some states which had previously celebrated Lincoln's Birthday dropped the observance after the federal holiday reforms, supporting the notion that the two presidential birthdays had been combined.

While the name change has never been authorized by Congress, it has gained a strong hold on the public consciousness, and is generally used on calendars, in advertising, and even by many government agencies. There have been attempts to introduce legislation requiring federal agencies to call the day Washington's Birthday, but these have never gotten very far. No matter what's in the law books, the popular usage is now well established.

Why does Milk Day deserve a paid recognized holiday? Don't get me wrong, I like milk, just like the next person, but a nationally recognized holiday? I thought Easter was a national holiday, then they took it away and gave us "Milk day". I don't get it.

geogen... I think we need to get back to the standard holidays... that represent this country... Washington's b-day, Lincoln's B-day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, the 4th, New Year's Day, Thanksgiving... any holiday about this county... get rid of Christmas as a freebie... it is religious although Christ was not born on that day. Remember last year when some people wanted the Muslim holiday's to be declared "school days off", and that resulted in the Jews getting their days cut as "legal" holidays for the children. The christians get christmas but other religions have to fight for days off at school and work.

Now, please understand that I am, by birth, a christian that converted to judaism, and practice neither.

That's old history man! Dont you know those wig wearing dudes were all slave owners and we should ignore anything good they did? We cant help it if our grandparents found these guys important. We need new heroes to look up to like Britney Spears and maybe the guy that invented the internet.

That was all sarcasum by the way. I agree. Let's go back to honoring our nation's founders. Oh.....and I do think MLK deserves his own day. But we only have 52 mondays in the year.

tangers... (had a 64 1/2 mustang that I called the Tanger)... rebuilt the engine when I bought it... Ford/Chrylser hemmie... And I am a woman! Anyways... MLK does deserve his own day as he was a great man for a good cause... but to lump all the presidents into the same day so that he can have his own holiday is just plain crazy! And to include honoring some of our worst presidents with our best is just obsurd. Why don't we have Roosevelt Day for attacking Japan and ending that part of WWII? Or Kennedy Day for launching the supporting and "launching" the moon missions. As you said, there are only so many Monday's in a year.... but, as a government employee... I kinda like the idea... more paid holidays ;-)

As I type this Britteny is on TMZ, and then there is a story about Paris Hilton... geez!

Charli,

Chicks with hotrods always score points in my book! You hit on a good one. What about NASA day? Where he honor the heroes that either risked their lives or lost their lives in the conquest of space.

tangger... wish I still had to tanger. Dad bought it for me from an older couple in 1970, and had super sized Goodyear tires put on it. A master mechanic at the dealership my father worked at helped me do the work... actually he showed me what to do and made me do the work. I was 20 years old. Had the car until 1974 when after I had my daughter. Hubby had a hard time driving the car... too fast for him, and he said it was not the type of car a mother should be driving. Sold it to a friend before we move up here to Tampa. That year they declared the car a classic... unheard of for a 10 year old car. In 1990 I met the man that designed the car. He lived in Brandon.

They have a 67 for sale at a lot on Florida AV for $2500. My father paid $700.

I also kept my old 86 Dodge convertible alive for over 300K miles by doing the work myself. Traded it in in 2000.

As to the original topic.... NASA Day would be a great day!

tangers... I did get even with the hubby... I worked for the Auto Trader in '89/'90 and one of my customers was the Mustang Connection in Riverview. Every time I came home from doing an ad, I would hit the hubby!

As to the NASA day... I'll start up a new blog to see if we can get something started.

I am an Environmental Specialist with Hills. Cty. Basically, I am a "dumpster diver". I also do a lot of educational graphics design about the proper disposal of household chemical & electronics, litter, etc. My hobbies are very diverse... golf and reading, with sci-fi, forensic mysteries, and history being my favorites. My other passion is photography, mostly nature. Ever since experiencing my first hurricane in Florida, Cleo in 1964 when I was 15, when the eye went over my house, I have been fascinated with weather. I have a 99% accuracy... including predicting Charley's turn away from Tampa the night before he hit down south.
