Proposed NASA Day

This is part of my MLK Day blog, at the suggestion of a poster... you'll have to go to my blog about MLK Day and Presidents' Day  to see what we are talking about, but.... Why do we not have a day dedicated to NASA and the space program?  They got us to the moon, into outer space, satellites that can view the planet for security and weather.  We have lost astronauts who got nothing more than a memorial at Cape Canaveral.

Because if we add any more holidays to the calendar, my head's going to explode. I'm lucky to remember my anniversary. OK, I jest.

I say add the day! Even is we share a day! There is no reason why we can't honor different people on the same day!
Space day isn't a government holiday. If you can't remember the day, that's not anyone's fault but your own. I bet you would remember it if you got the day off?

Actually this debate just shows that we need to rethink what constiutes a "National Holiday". There are many great people and events that have passed and many more to come. We don't have enough days to honor them all. How about honoring some people and events with a holiday that will last only a decade or quarter century? Surely that's enough time to show one's honor. Making them all perpetual will only cause fights when we have someone new and just as important to honor and no day left to give them. There will come a day when MLK day will be lumped into another day or removed altogether. Think not? It happened to George Washington and Abe Lincoln!
