I nearly choked on my cocktail when I saw that story!   I can see the entries... "My daughter's biology teacher insists on teaching evolution over creationism.  That goes against my belief.  This teacher is terrible."   "I want my child to learn fractions in 3rd grade, like I did.  The teacher insists on reteaching addition because of the FCATS.  He already knows how to add.  It's not his fault that other kids in the class do not.  Go after the other teachers!"  "Why doesn't my child know about the Civil War?  He's in 5th grade! "  "Why doesn't my child know the difference between Monet and Manet and Mozart?"

It's not the fault of the teachers... it's the fault of the Florida school system!  The teachers do not really care any more... they are not allowed to teach.  I moved to FL  in 1962 from OH.  I was at least 2 years ahead of most of my class mates!  When my daughter was in private school 3rd grade, and I was subbing... the advanced 5th grade class wasn't even up to what my daughter had already been taught!   That was 30 years ago... and things have gotten worse!

Blame FL... not the teachers!

Amen Char.

The meddling in Tally has destroyed our public schools....but wasn't that the plan all along?

Since the voucher payments can go to fund private schools, why not eliminate the competition and emasculate the public schools?

Then the majority will not be bothered with the pesky scientific theories which are contrary to their personal beliefs.

Then they will be free to pray as long and as often as they choose in the classroom, no matter the fact that a minority of children may not believe as the majority does.

By the way, the greatest damage was done by the smarter Bush brother...smart like a fox.

You lost me when you wanted creationism taught in biology. You do realize that evolution is based on biology right? Enlighten me please.

Sadly, it's not just Florida having this trouble. The country as a whole is to blame. Parents are to blame also. If parents gave a crap about the schools their children went to, there would be changes made. The bad teachers, and yes there are some, would be weeded out and the system of education would be changed. I'm nearly 44 and I seemed to have gotten a great education IN FLORIDA! Things haven't always been bad here in the schools. Let's go back to teaching kids and building on the fundimentals. We coddle our kids now and when they fail, we don't tell them they failed because we dont want to hurt their feelings. That's why a lot of schools have no F grade.
It used to be when a kid did fale, he was held back. It's called incentive to do well in school! As a kid, I worked harder because I didn't want to be left behind and my parents would kick my butt if I did! That's the system that worked and we should return to it.

Now let's come full circle. The majority of teachers are great but there are bad teachers out there that should be weeded out! If this contest draws attention to that, it can only help our kids. The problem is identifying the bad ones. Dare I say "Teacher Testing or Assessment"? I want one good argument supporting why a bad teacher should be kept in the classroom.
Just one.....come on.
I'm waiting people!

If you all remember most of the good teachers left Florida and went to other states to make money that was deserving of a teacher, so what you see is what was left.
Maybe the money that was miss-spent to decorate the politicains desks with flowers on opening day, could have gone to keep the better teachers, ( Along with the other missappropriated money that Florida wastes.)

You will be shocked by the following... A coworker/neighbor told me a while ago about a student of her husband's at Tampa Catholic. The young man was beligerent on many days. The teacher, at a Parent-Teacher meeting told the parents of the problems with their child. They took it lightly. Well, this week the child, a teenager, acted up in class again. The parents were called into the main office. It was a "be expelled or withdraw your child" situation. As the "case" against the young man was read to the parents, the mother said... "Just let him do what he wants. That's what we do." My friend's hubby nearly fell off his chair. The situation had really been upsetting him. More complaints were read to the parents. At this time the kid turned to the adults from the school and mooned them and used a few foul words! The one administrative "supporter" of the kid quickly grabbed the papers and handed them to the parents to sign... they withdrew their son!

The odd thing about this whole thing... the teacher was asked questions about evolution and answered them... even taught it... in a catholic school. The only time he had a problem was when parents intervened... the students wanted to learn about it.

tangers... that's why I and the ex went out of our way to keep our daughter in private school. We knew she got a good education. (Graduated highschool when she was 16.) The school shared the year's courses with the parents.

If a child can not pass a course, in our day, it was the child's fault... and the parents. Now they want to blame the teachers! Come on, there are some bad teachers out there but the parents are busy doing other things. It's better to let the kids play video games while the parents are on-line than to sit with their children and review/help with homework.

The parents are to blame as much as the system. The good teachers are so upset over the way the system is being run that they are leaving the state or retiring early.

I am an Environmental Specialist with Hills. Cty. Basically, I am a "dumpster diver". I also do a lot of educational graphics design about the proper disposal of household chemical & electronics, litter, etc. My hobbies are very diverse... golf and reading, with sci-fi, forensic mysteries, and history being my favorites. My other passion is photography, mostly nature. Ever since experiencing my first hurricane in Florida, Cleo in 1964 when I was 15, when the eye went over my house, I have been fascinated with weather. I have a 99% accuracy... including predicting Charley's turn away from Tampa the night before he hit down south.
