I am all for it.... no using cell phones while in a car... and forget about the "hands free" stipulation... people do not pay attention when driving and talking on the phone at the same time.  Cell phones should be rendered useless the minute the engine is turned on!  Take today... it was raining.  I was nearly involved in, or saw, several close calls when drivers where on the phones.  As I was walking to my car, on the way home from work, one driver almost ran over a person in the crosswalk... the walker had the light!

As I said before, make cell phones useless when the car's engine is turned on!

Yes, more laws thats the answer. We should just give up all control over our lives and let the government control every aspect of our lives.

The UK had these laws in effect the moment cellphones came out. We should never have been so stupid to let this get out of hand.

Consider this: people who have to be on cell phones all the time are people who cannot be alone and cannot make decisions without asking someone else for advice. These people are desperately insecure and have no control over their own lives because they are dependants of 1) a device 2) other people making their decisions for them and 3) who are too scared of life to be alone.
Now put someone like that behind the wheel of a car and you've got an accident waiting to happen.
And if they cannot control their own lives without a "life line" they need laws to help them make decisions and protect the rest of us.

I think it's Awesome! It never fails when I get behind some moron driving like their heads up their arse and go around them and 9 times out of ten it's some A hole on the phone! If you can't walk and chew gum at the same time get off the flippin sidewalk!

gang... good comments. Someone here seems to be a phone addict. '-) When I sit outside at lunch, I watch the drivers. It's been proven that any of the mistakses... driving the wrong way on the one way street, turning into traffic, a horn blaring, a tire screech... all turned out to be because of people on cell phones while driving. There was one case of a walker almost getting hit... the walker and the driver were both on cell phones!

Also annoying are the people who have the other person on speaker. It's bad enough that I have to hear the one side of the conversation while in an elevator, but both sides?!?!?

I have a better idea. Ban cell phones. I for one will never own one.

I don't own one either. They're okay for an emergency (calling 911) but there is no reason in the world for anyone to be on the phone 24/7. They need to put it down and find something more productive to do with themselves other than gossip.

The ones that are driving are also eating and smoking while talking on the cellphone. So who's driving the car??? I've seen someone reading a book while driving.

I love my cell phone, good luck on taking it outta my hands. Cell phones create jobs, lets just get rid of those too. The cell phone is the most amazing all in one device out there. Since you like trying to run other peoples lives so much, just make a law for people to where a Blue Tooth in there ear while driving. Problem solved

looks like another "addict" joined the blog. Cell phones are okay... if used responsibly. Driving and talking on a phone, even using Blue Tooth, is not a good idea. Cell phones are good for parents to keep track of their kids... that is, parents that really care what their kids are doing. The art of conversation is doomed. How many times have you been in a deep conversation with someone and their phone rings? It's their husband asking what is for dinner... he couldn't have asked in the morning or called on the land line? Drivers on phones do not pay attention. Does not matter whether they are holding their phone to their ears... got behind one woman today doing so... she was driving too slow, weaving, and nearly got hit as she made a right turn on red! Or, using an ear piece... Today, on the way home, one man was busy talking on his phone... ear piece... you could tell because there was no one else in the big pick up with him and he was talking and gesturing... he was also pulling a small trailer. He changed lanes, cut someone off, the trailer almost hit the other car!

Cell phones do not creat jobs... except for the "Geek Squad"... love the new commercials with the wizard! The cell phone is not the most amazing device out there... it's a pain in the A... I can not even go to the movies where they say to turn off your cell phone only to hear a phone ring and someone starts talking!

People in my department are told to NOT get on cell phones when driving. They are supposed to pull over and return calls. That is good, but most have personal cell phones and do not follow the rules.

Long ago, before cell phones, people were able to make decisions and go along in their everyday lives without having to have a phone on their ear all the time. People who have to use a phone all the time are insecure and can't be alone. They are incapable of making good sound decisions and are always afraid they will loose contact with their life line.
There is no possibility to be independant when attached to a phone. One who says they are constantly "connected" are constantly in constant dependancy on another or on a device.

A week or so ago there was a news story about a man who was trying to call 911 on the cell. He couldn't get through and called several others on his cell to see if they could call 911 for him. Each one tried to call 911 on a cell and couldn't get through. Finally someone suggested a land line, called 911 and got through. Duh!!

leash... I agree with you. I also feel that people who are "ADDICTED" to their cell phones are really very lonely, insecure people. Heck! I've been known for ignoring my land line! There are things more important than talking on the phone... like talking "face to face" with a person... driving responsibly, etc. Today on the way home there was a woman in a big SUV with one hand holding a phone up to her ear, and flicking cig ashes out the window with the other hand, and cutting other drivers off as she changed lanes to get around other drivers who were actually paying attention to the traffic ahead of them!

I've seen people in the grocery store calling their husband/wife to ask what kind of bread to buy. How can anybody be so stupid that they can't buy bread by themselves without having to ask. I've also seen women asking their husband's permission to buy something on the cell. Like is it okay to buy steak? Gimme a break! Can't anyone make a decision anymore? It's disgusting.
Driving a car, even worse. Multi-taaking in a car means keeping your eyes on the road, keeping to the speed limit and being aware of what's going on around you. It doesn't include gossiping, flicking butts and trying to cram a cheeseburger down your throat.
We should start calling this "The Cellular Zone".

leash... I've been run over by people talking on their cell phones while shopping... not to mention their screaming kids trying to get mom to buy their favorite cereal! Mom just keeps talking on the phone. One time this kid was running up and down the aisle knocking merchandise off the shelves... mom kept talking on the phone!

Personally I think that cell phone users, for the most part, are insecure people. I can see needing one for work depending on the job, but for personal use they should be used for emergencies if out of the house. We older people have gotten along quite well during our years on this planet without cell phones... raised our children, done our shopping, etc.

Your right, Charli. I saw a woman in the check out line a few days ago. Her cell phone rang, she answered it. Of course I only heard her side of the conversation but it was a wrong number. The caller asked what number it he/she called and this woman gave this stranger her cell phone number and conitnued to have a longer conversation with this person even going so far as to give our her home number and address. How stupid!! The guy on the other end could be "Ted Bundy" or "John Couey" for all anyone knows and could be waiting at her door when she gets home. Plus everyone at the check out could hear her end of the conversation meaning some other character could memorize this information and hunt her down.
Giving this sort of information or carrying on personal business in a public place is a mindless thing to do. Anyone can hear it and anyone can act upon it.
I don't have a cell phone but think also it's good for business and good for emergency but never good for the mindless chatter of the insecure.

leash... good point, but the addicts don't think about that. I'm still trying to get over an incident at the movies a few months ago... As the screen was saying to turn off cell phones, a women a few seats over from me answered her phone that was ringing so loud that the whole theater could hear it. She answered the phone... while her baby was screaming... another child was also crying... and... the movie was not one a child that age should be seeing! She continued to chat on the phone as the rest of the message about cell phones ran on the screen. During the movie the phone rang!

These people have absolutely no focus and can't see what's going on around them. They can only focus on one thing at a time and that's the cell phone. It's like Pavlov's dog who responded to a bell for his food.
There are plenty of other things in the world to put one's focus on; for instance the woman you described had children with her (children who shouldn't have been at that movie). If she had the right focus, she would be at a Disney movie or in the park with her kids, not talking on her phone and annoying other people.
Just think of the free time there people would have if they would chuck their phones in the gulf and do something productive with themselves!!

leash... I really feel sorry for people who addicted to their cell phones... let me correct that... I feel sorry for their spouses and children.... if I ever, I hope not, get involved in an accident, I will make sure that the car will be checked for a cell phone and the usage time.... I would love to pay off my new home!

Good idea, Charli.
There's no hope for people who care an addiction too far. It's their families and children who end up being neglected and hurt.
Cellphones have to be the most selfish invention of our times.
Oh, BTW, when you get their cell phone usage, check whether they are talking or texting.
Texting while driving (and they do it!) is beyond the limit!
