Can we start a petition to get a "revoketion" (sic) of the amendment?  We should.  Many early voters voted "for" without the full knowledge of what would happen and regret voting "for" and then finding out they weren't going to save that much.... my boss is one of those and now rues his vote.

I loved tonight's (Friday... since the new moderation rules went into effect and I have no idea when this will be posted....) blip about the ineffectiveness of the past legislative period... time spent on trivial things like the bulls parts, Rhonda's personal agendas, the state song, etc.

I work for the county.  They are cutting back on a lot of things... like raises.... but not on expenses for employees such as parking in the county parking lots.

As I said, can we put a "revoketion" on the ballot?  If anyone knows how, please spread the word.

Charli, have you peeked at the Hills.Co. Salary Data Base on TBO.Com? It has EVERY single county worker from the top to bottom and their salaries. I was in shock at the salaries of the powers that be in our Clerks office. In my area alone $45 hr, $35hr, another 2 or 3 at $30 hr...these are bosses that barely have a high school education, they produce nothing and are out of the office 70% of the time. Other birdbrains making $50, $60 same thing. There are 3 in our office that got big increases because they re-classfied their positions after the wage freeze. One of our higher ups who makes $60 an hour and no education, hired her daughter 3 years ago that flunked out of college and stuck her somewhere and now she is a director of one of our areas making big bucks. It is insane! Unfair! They put on this pitiful display about how the poor citizens are going to suffer and they could care less. TBO.COM -tools-data bay-all databases drop down and choose hills co salaries.

Randy... no, I hadn't looked at the TBO thing, but I will in a few minutes. I've been trying to get an upgrade for the past 7 years. Either my supervisor (who is one of those that really shouldn't be in that position, doesn't do his job, etc.) always has an excuse not to upgrade me (losing the paperwork, family emergency, etc.). The first time was just before his supervisor retired for health reasons..., the next time the director told my super to do the paperwork... several people got their upgrades... other sections...oh, yes... my super. Not me... super again delayed the paperwork and our director suddenly retired. My salary was pennies away from the top... yep, they raised the cap. Now it's the freeze for everyone. For the most part our people are qualified for the positions, if not over qualified... and we have at least 5 retiring in the next year.

Randy... awesome info. One coworker is definately way over paid in my department.
And, talking about wasted money...have you seen the lousy job being done on the entrances at the County Center? Why not just plain concrete?

WOW! I am featured again! We need to find a way to get the legislature to have an emergency meeting, revoke the amendment... They made a big mistake by allowing it to be placed on the ballot to begin with... no research, no "advertising" of the possible effects on the state and counties. The impact the ill thought out amendment is having on our state is horrendous! Home owners are not saving that much while other needed services will be suffering... services that the home owners who voted for the amendment are going to need.

Revoke the amendment, go back to the "planning board", rethink everything. The current economy is frightening enough as it is. My big surprise is that educational services are being cut... explains why FL is so low in the ratings and will sink even lower.

Surprisingly, the amendment is going to help my parents. They are selling their home and moving to a smaller one thanks to the amendment.

The taxes were the one issue that kept them from moving previously. Their house was just too big, but to move and incur the new tax rate would be detrimental to their income.

Everyone had a chance to vote Y or N and most of us heard the outcry of all agencies. I think the counties, cities and State were running just fine in 2005, 2006, 2007 so why now can't they get along with the tax reduction (BTW they are still living on the taxes from 2007 they haven't collected 2008 yet).

Concerning "Revoke the Property Tax Amendment"

Hi Charli

I love political blogs! I enjoyed your post. First Nobody should ever vote for a proposal they dony understand because nasty things happen when we do that. The constitution is fairly hard to ammend anyway and dog gone near impossible to undo something once done.

That said. The tax amendment, although not perfect was our best hope at the moment to preserve life long and long term residents homestead cap and get portability. This amendment did not benefit everyone in the same way. Fortunately for you, a very long time resident, your taxes are capped at 3% per year and now you have portability to buy another home or down size. and retain you cap. Those who are the most dissatisfied are those that have been in Florida a relatively short period and want you to have to pay the same tax rates as they do. Now, where is the fair in that seeing we have been pouring our lives out in Florida for the last 30+ years. My tax dollar is here. As I said in the beginning, the bill wasnt perfect but it was the best bet at the time. The upcoming vote on the sales tax amendment, please be familiar with that. Dont let anyone go tinkering with sales taxes. Its already 7% in Hillsborough Co and if you let the powers that be tinker with that lookout. Next thing you know you will be paying out 10% on every dollar you spend on most EVERYTHING! Again, thanks for the post. I enjoyed it.

elk... thanks for the encouragement. I love to play "devil's advocate" and write essays on the oddness of today's life.

No... I get nothing out of the new amendment. Although a long time resident, I am a recent home owner, under my own name.

The amendment should have actually been two separate amendments... portability being a separate issue. The bill was not thought out, rushed to the voters. If my grandchildren were in this state, I would make my daughter move to another state where I know the boys would get a better education. Florida has always been in the lower rank... even when I moved here as a young teenage and was 2 years ahead of everyone in my class!

I am all for the sales tax increase... that way everyone will contribute... renters, tourists, etc. Why should home owners bear the brunt of the taxes?

Hi Charli

elkahna here

Sorry you didnt benefit from the amendment. I "assumed" that you were a long time homeowner and didn't think about someone just purchasing a new home. That is the reason we are still in the home we have owned for the last almost 30 years. Since the amendment passed now it is possible though not likely that that we might look for a new one.

I do agree with you on the sales tax issue except for the possibility of opening "Pandora's Box". The sales tax issue as I understand it is solely to eliminate the schools portion and that is the "Pandora's Box" effect as there is no cap at this point to the tax effect. It is possible although not likely for the sales tax to rise every couple of years to make up for budget shortfalls. Once that box is opened it would be almost impossible to stuff those evils back into the box. The other side of sales tax issues is that those that can least afford it are the ones most affected by sales taxes. Those on limited, minimum wage, fixed or subsistance wages would be negatively impacted the most. Anyway keep up the great posts. I love good, clean, spirited debate and opinion. I tend to learn something every now and again! :-)

elk.. sorry I didn't get back to you. Apparently something is happening with the site not notifying me when a post is added.

The sales tax thing is badly thoughout. Randy and I are some of the people who are suffering because of the amendment... our salaries are pretty much frozen. What used to get us a 4% raise, plus COL, for "Outstanding Performance" was reduced to 3% MOL... and we have to fight for "Outstanding"... were told that you had to be really outstanding to get that rating. I am.... I do my job, my supervisors's job, work for other sections on special projects that have nothing to do with my job! A lot of people who were looking to retire, enter the "Drop" program, have changed their minds.

If I had the money, I'd leave this state. It doesn't care about its residents... especially the children and the older residents.. (Loved going to work the other day and seeing a poster in the lobby... May is "older citizen appreciation" month. Being that I am soon to become one of the "older citizens"... one year to go before I am 60... ) all the "older citizens get is a poster... no special events, picnics, etc. But, the county hosts Hispanic events, Black American events, Asian events, etc. with free picnics in the park down town... but that is another subject altogether~

Charli how did it go on your Condo problem? My daughter almost purchased her apartment about 2 years ago when they were converting over. After I looked over everything I told her not to do it and she is so glad she didn't. They did the same thing. Some were bought and when they couldn't sell the rest they went back to leasing them.

They can't give us raises, yet they can put 32 inch plasma tvs in the lobby area. What is up with that? Not to mention all the upper elites got blackberries and take home laptops. Sounds mighty fishy to me.
