I just wanted to inform you when you replace a factory gas cap with a locking gas cap you run a very high chance of a evap code to set in the pcm module on cars and trucks, but only on newer cars and trucks from about 1999 and up. Causing a check engine light to come on in the dash and in most cases making your car run rough or not allowing your car to start. This is cause by an improper seal from the locking gas cap not allowing the evap system to create enough vacuum and pressurise. So I know there is problems with people stealing gas, but it is not worth it to to risk your car not being able to run right or even being able to run at all.

Thanks for mentioning that... it is very important. Back in the 70's there was a devise that locked the gas cap "door". I haven't had time to look into whether such a device still exists.

The bad thing about all the reports on TV and in the papers... it will get people, worthless people, to start stealing gas. Face it, put out a news story about something that most people do not know anything about/think about.... and they start doing it!

I just want to add that if you go to your local auto parts store and purchase a vehicle specific cap,Dont just grab one off the Shelf as that will Happen. It will throw a Code.

well chev tech, i would like to set the record for ya. i have been an ase master tech since ase came about (a copule of years) replacement of the fuel cap will not set the check engine light! only if the wrong cap was bought, the cap is not turned until the third click, or the cap is removed or loosened while the key is in the run or start positions.an evap code will not prevent the engine from starting, and will not make the car run rough from the fuel cap stand point, only if the evap system it self has an issue.so folks lock away but be sure you buy a correct cap from a respected automotive supply out let. fats

I have a locking gas cap myself, and haven't had any issues with my car. You just have to make sure you get the right one for the car verses just using any old cap--to me, it's done nothing more than give me peace of mind that someone isn't going to siphon some of my gas. :]
