Hi Everyone

elkahna here!

As I was reading the Tribune and having my morning coffee, I ran across an article in the paper and on the internet news that just about made my blood boil. There was our President more or less begging our "friends" the Saudi's to increase oil production to help with the high prices here in America. There was then the all too often response that they had already increased production on May 10th and were happy with where things were and weren't pondering increasing production again at this time.

First and foremost, WHEN ARE WE GOING TO LEARN THAT the SAUDI's and OPEC are NOT OUR FRIENDS??!! We continue to provide them with a guarantee of security and many other benefits and all we get from them is lip service.

I am absolutely not for isolationism BUT, we need to stop kowtowing to these "friends" and let them provide for themselves. They are takers and rarely ever givers in this relationship. We are addicted to oil and need to wean ourselves off OPECs oil and let them drown in it. There is a teaching that you need to keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.

Preserve our environment and be as careful as is absolutely possible but, either come up with new fuel alternatives (not corn, we are seeing what happens when you divert food to fuel now) or use the resources we have. This newest ploy of the global warming folks in getting the polar bear declared a "threatened" species was brilliant. There are thousands more polar bear now than in the 70's. We will never be able to drill because of a "threatened " species.  ANWR, Florida Straits and the Gulf of Mexico all need to be explored and drilled. The Chinese are in Cuba now and will be angle drilling in the Florida Straits in the near future if they aren't now. We know how careful their exploits are.

All that to say, utilize our resources, conserve, invest in new refineries (no new ones since the 70's) develope new and better fuel alternatives, protect the environment as best as we can but come on now, polar bears threatened?? Please! If we dont take this bull by the horns and corral it now we will end up passing this mess on to our grandchildren. With some of the "friends" we have we absolutely don't need no enemies!!

Its and opinion. It and 4 bucks might get you some coffee and I did say MIGHT!!

I would drill so many holes around this state that the seabed would look like swiss cheese!
The tree hugging green nazis have to be put in their place and told to shut up! Other countries are going to be charting our course if we don't get rid of these false green road blocks! The problem with politicians and the green movement is they can pass mesures that don't cost the government anything and it makes them look good! Yes I include President Bush in this! Basically it's feel good politics! The result is, it costs our businesses money and you and I alike! The one exception I can think of was Bush saying no to Kyoto! That lop-sided deal was only good for the Chinese and small European countries. Thank God he saw the light on that one.

DRILL FLORIDA NOW!

What happened to the old mantra, "A barrel of food for a barrel of crude"?

Will we EVER get it???

Bush has made sure we have no friends Arab friends or allies. How can you keep your enemies closer, if you wont speak to them.

erik,

The media likes you to think that the president has pissed off the whole world but the reality is, there are at least 60 other countries with us in Iraq. I'll admit that most are in a support capacity but the point and truth is that we DO have A LOT of alies in this world. The most of media just doesn't seem to be among them. If you don't believe me, you must have missed Russell Rhodes report from CENTCOM.

Take off your blinder and see what's around you! With your blinders off, you can see Russell's report here---> http://www.myfoxtampabay.com/myfox/pages/Home/Detail?co

This country is screwed and I don't think it will matter who is president for the next 4 years. What happened to are politicians when they are more worried about offending and padding the Saudi's pockets then the American People.
I do have a question?
What will be the dollar amount for gas that will be the breaking point for the american people. I thought it would be $4 a gallon but we are almost there and when I go out the roads are bumper to bumper and the mall parking lots are full.

Hey Neckcarjim

What a great point you make. I actually thought the tipping point world be at $3.00 but as you say we are approaching $4.00 and nothing seems to change. We are in a recession no one will admit. Inflation is rampant but the FED keeps lowering interest rates hoping people will borrow more money they cant pay back. When the blow out happens it will be bad but I guess as long as the stock market is happy the FED thinks everyone is just zippy. Hey folks, as you can see by my avatar I get around on a motorcycle. It takes $24.00 now to fill up a MOTORCYCLE!! and what used to cost $50.00 at the grocery store now costs $125.00. I don't know where the end is financially, but it is near!!

As a nation, we can no longer continue this charade of pandering to Arab nations (OPEC) that have openly stated their intentions of bringing down western democracy. Open debate has proven time after time to be a futile exercise. Some may remember the phrase "know thine enemy" quoted in several books of antiquity. It is still the best advise.

Answers to any lasting solution on fuel prices lie in alternatives to fossil fuels; not wars, not destroying the habitate and certainly not using food sources for fuel (sorry Al Gore). Ethanol has done more damage to the worlds economy than any possible gain.

Lastly, we as Americans must face conserving our resources as did the W.W. II generation when everything was under mandatory rationing. It is no different now than it was then even during a declared war. My guess is that "rationing" (fuel and perhaps food) isn't that far distant whether we like it or not.

Comment about food prices, yesterday me and the wife went food shopping and we bought $225.00 worth of grocey's for $140.00. I was able to stock my pantry/end of world cabinet with enough goods to last 3 weeks plus my regular weeks shopping. Yes we used coupons but we were also smart shopping, when i saw that publix had the 2 for 1 specials on named brand goods I jumped on it.
My point is, are food prices realy to high or are people just to lazy to shop smart.

elkahna,

WOW $80.00 a week??!!! I would have already had to walk more, notice I said more, if I had that gas bill. My poor F150 sits idle and alone with no gas in it. It has twin tanks and would cost well over $100.00 to fill. $20.00 doesnt hardly move the gauge! Probably wont start.

OK, let's see how we as a nation waste money:

Foreign aid. Merely paying protection money so folks will be our "friends".

NASA. Space can wait. Let the other countries run the International Space Station till we're back on our feet.

Iraq. Move the operation to Afghanistan. Kill all the bad guys there and those hiding in Pakistan.

The UN. We should quit (we don't listen to them anyway, do we?), and tell them to leave. They could set up their HQ somewhere else and we can turn that building into condos.

Draft all healthy illegal aliens. Teach them English and send them to Afghanistan.

Break off diplomatic relations with the French.

Put an oil rig in mmustanggs back yard.

Bring back chain gangs, work farms, and put all prisoners to work without pay. Disconnect their cable TV. Make them grow their own food or generate electricity.

I'm sure you folks can think of many, many more.

Gee Vit, you just solved all our political problems in a single comment - all told you may have saved us enough money send all of congress for a feast McDonalds. Vit for President!

One thing I've taken offense at is the way the media has protrayed Bush as "All but begging" the Saudis to increase oil production "Please sir, may I have another?"

This is an example of what it will be like under Obama - who wants to negotiate with no preconditions (i.e. without having anything to offer). This whole situation cannot be laid at the feet of Bush. OPEC has been a thorn in our collective ass since the Carter Administration in the 70's.

Had democrats in Congress, and Bill Clinton while President approved drilling in ANWAR, we would not be in this predicament now. By now we could be producing as much as 3 Million barrels of oil a day that one site. This is without mentioning drilling on the continental shelf or in the Gulf of Mexico.

We keep demanding a comprehensive immigration plan, but don't seem to have anythign that resembles an energy plan - let alone one that is comprehensive!

Realities:
1. Republicans are NOT in favor of destroying the environment. We love clean air, water and animals as much as any democrat.
2. This is an oil based economy.
3. We don't have sufficient technology or resources to move to any other economic model in the short term.
4. We don't have the resources to continue consuming fossil fuels the way we are at present.
5. Part of the reason Solar or Wind power are not (presently) viable alternatives is that our power distribution grid is not equipped to handle that model.

To solve the problems based on the realities, we need to take a three tiered approach to resolving those issues.

Short Term:
1. Drill everywhere, but do it in an environmentally sound manner. We have this technology available today.
2. Begin revising our power grid to accommodate a massive influx Solar and Wind alternatives.
3. Offer massive tax deductions to individuals and businesses that convert to alternative power sources.
4. Implement national standards on construction with an emphasis on energy efficiency and alternative power sources like Solar and Wind power, as well as Geo-Thermal systems.

My Energy Plan (cont.)

5. Press strongly for energy conservation. Have any of you ever wondered what it costs to run all those street lamps?

Mid-Range:
1. Implement national mandates for fuel automotive efficiency and vehicles that run on alternative fuels (Solar, Hydrogen, Natural Gas, LP gas, and Water)
2. Build Nuclear Power Plants

Long Range:
1. Eliminate all dependency on off-shore fuel sources.
2. Eliminate any use of fossil fuels for power and transportation.

All that, and I never mentioned Global Warming. Nor did I suggest that we pollute the air, water or kill off any species of animal.
