I just watched the story about the lady who was walking her dog in Portage county and it ended up getting killed in an illegal animal trap.
First of all- why on earth did she take her dog off the leash? Doesn't Ohio have a leash law? Using illegal traps is wrong! I am in no way saying it is right, but it is the pet owner's job to be responsible for their animal.
You realy hit on a sore spot with this story.
In March of this year I was woke up at 6:00 am by my neighbor telling me his dog got loose and killed my pet goat. I was devastated!! It turns out my goat wasn't dead, but when the vet finaly got here my goat was barely breathing and it was a miracle he was still alive. My goats are in an enclosed, 5 ft. high fence. This dog got into the pen somehow and thrashed my goat around like a rag doll, and killed 5 of my chickens. My goat slept on my front porch for a month while I had to give him pain killers and antibiotics four times a day. He couldn't walk, he would fall flat on his face. I had to flush out deep puncture wounds in his neck to prevent infection. He went through hell because of irresponsible pet owners. Alot of people may not understand, and say it's JUST a goat. My goat means as much to me as city people's dogs. My goat is forever disabled by that attack. Loose dogs are a danger!! To people, property, and livestock. If you love your dogs- keep them on a leash!!!!! I have dogs too, so it's not like I am an animal hater, quite the opposite. I love animals.
I feel very bad for this lady loosing her pet.
But I have a question>>>>>>>>>>>
Why did her story make the news and when I contacted channel 8 about my story, and the problem with loose dogs in Portage county I was ignored??!!
I hope they catch the person who set the trap, but I also hope people learn to keep their dogs on leashes.
Just needed to vent.

Amen!
Loose dogs and stray cats are abundant and it is the careless pet owners that are the problem.

Several years ago I witnessed a neighbor's frequently loose dog make an error in judgment when he entered the pasture of one of my mares with a foal at her side. I tried to intervene by yelling at the dog and the mare but, that well seasoned mare attacked the dog when he began stalking her filly! She reared up and her front hooves came down hard on the dog's back. She instantly grabbed the screaming dog by the neck and slammed it down to the ground. Unfortunately, she broke the dog's back. I was very upset to witness this completely natural but painful act of protection on the mare's part. I ran to the house and called the dog's owner and he told me to just shoot the dog! I refused and told him to remove his dog from my property. He was angry because he had to pay a vet to euthanize this poor dog. He wasn't even upset that it was suffering! Many people had complained about this same dog killing chickens, tormenting other dogs, and generally being a nuisance. Why can't people just care and love their animals? Sharing a life of a pet is a lifelong commitment and one should think long and hard before bringing an animal into one's home or barn.

how traggic are both of these stories. some people have no sense of what it means to own a pet. some people lack knowledge, wisdom and a heart concerning that animals need looked after, trained, kept safe away from obviously dangerous situations.that they need food, water, shelter just as they do. I wish the traps would be outlawed, how dangerous for even a child playing in the fields, or woods. we need tougher laws inacted.

I am a homemaker. I hope to start breeding goats in the spring. I have 2 alpines, 1 nigerian dwarf, 1 pygmy, and on mix goat. My children are grown, so now my goats are my "kids".
