Well, I decided to quit smoking. My last cigarette was on December 28th. Sometimes I feel like ripping someone's head off, but I take a deep breath and tell myself that it will pass. I am using the patch. It realy helps, but sometimes I REALY want a cigarette!! This is one of the hardest things I've ever done.

Excellent!

Find someone who will be supportive (friend or relative) talk to them every time you want to have a cigarette, they will rmeind you why you are quitting.

try the ohio quit smoking phone line, it is helpful for support and ideas. My mom, a smoker forever, who is 64 just quit , that was a miracle to us!
also hubby quit after 25+ years he used Ziban or what ever that prescription pill is, for about 4 days and he was done smoking. The cost going up to about 4.00 a pack helped too!

BEST WISHES:
I QUIT OVER FOUR YEARS AGO, USED THE PATCH: SOMEDAYS I WOULD PUT A FRESH PATCH ON IN EVENING IF WE WERE GOING SOMEWHERE WHERE SMOKERS WOULD BE. i DID TWO CYCLES OF EACH LEVEL HEY WHY NOT TAKE EIGHT MONTHS OF NICOTINE SUPPLEMENT INSTEAD OF FOUR. WHATS THE HURRY? ALSO TELL YOURSELF NEVER TOUCH A CIG OR A PACK OF CIGS WITH YOUR HANDS EVEN IF SOMEONE ASK YOU TO PASS THEIR PACK ACROSS THE TABLE ECT. REFUSE! YOU CAN'T SMOKE -UM IF YOU DON'T TOUCH-UM. FINALLY I DID GAIN TEN TO TWENTY POUNDS BUT IT IS WORTH IT TO BE SMOKE FREE, TO SMELL NICE, TO NOT ENDANGER YOUR KIDS, ECT. ECT. ECT. ALL MY BEST WISHES STAY STRONG! THE HARDEST PART IS OVER...
P.S. don't touch them !

Wish you the best! I'm a smoker of 30+ years. My first experience at the start of the new year with bronchitis/pneumonia has started me thinking about quitting. With the smoke-free 'law', it should be of immense help when dining out (or socializing in an environment that allowed smoking).

Keep us posted!

Good for you, Gyro! It took me 3 tries to finally quit. I tried everything but the only thing that worked for me was cold turkey. I had headaches for about a week and was very agitated for at least a month, but the end result was worth it, even the 30 lb. weight gain.

I am off all asthma meds, except albuteral when I need it. I can climb stairs without shortness of breath. My gums have gotten better and I no longer have periodontal disease & my teeth are white. As an added bonus I don't have to paint my walls & ceiling as often and I now have a substantial savings account (put the $$ I would have spent on smokes into a savings account).

You CAN do this. It's just a matter of finding the way to quit that works for you. If you slip, don't feel like a loser, just get back on the bandwagon immediately. We are all here for you, let us know how you're doing.

Way to go. I quit 7 years ago. The patch does work and quitting is well worth the bother. You will feel better and have more money. The weight gain can be a concern as I put on a few pounds. This too can be handled with a little more discipline and some exercise (which is much easier now that I can breathe). And don't forget the power of prayer. It helped me. Stick with it and God bless.
All the time...God is good.

Thank you all for your support. I was a bear yesterday- but I got thru it. I had to pick my son up at his girlfriend's house and I told him I was going to go buy a pack, and he talked me out of it. I think a support group is so important. 2 Weeks ago today was my last cigarette. It's getting a LITTLE better, except for when I get realy stressed out I want to smoke, so I just take a deep breath.

I'm glad you're still not smoking. Just incase you didn't know you can get free patches thru the state. If your insurance doesn't cover them the state will. You get 8 weeks worth. Also try going to www.whyquit.com. Some pretty scary stuff there. I've been thinking about quiting myself. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before they kill me. I suppose it would be a good idea to stop thinking and start doing!

You were a bear yesterday & your son talked you out of buying a pack--he is a very good son, and great support group to you. Gyro, you are another day closer to being healthier! You will start to feel better each day you don't smoke. Like I said, I was agitated for about a month, but I believe now that it was probably more mental withdrawal than physical withdrawal. keep it up-you can do it!

Again, thanks for the support.
Klh1886- I could always use a "quitting buddy"
I have asthma and COPD. So I know quitting is the best thing for me. I went to the store today and I was realy going to buy a pack- just to smoke ONE! Then this elderly lady walked past me and boy did she stink! (no disrespect intended) and I thought, I don't want to smell like that any more. There are little incentives everywhere if you look for them.

I'm sure I will need a quitting buddy too. Thank you for the offer. I have been reading up on the effects of smoking, and I'm waiting for the patches to come in the mail. My plan is to quit on Feb. 1st. I have asthma too. Not fun. I know this is something I have to do. So I'm working my way to the goal!

Survivormom: You sound like you've given up. Don't do that. I've quit twice before. Both times for 6 months. I'm going to keep trying until I get it right!

Survivormom---It took me 3 tries. I kept failing and I gave up for a while. But it dawned on me one day after I snuffed my smoke out and then reached for my puffer---I'm gonna breathe OR I'm gonna smoke. Duh!

It was hard, I won't lie to you. And many times I wanted a smoke but always found courage, just like klh1886 is doing.

It's worth it to at least keep trying. Eventually you'll find the method that works for you to quit forever.

I am a homemaker. I hope to start breeding goats in the spring. I have 2 alpines, 1 nigerian dwarf, 1 pygmy, and on mix goat. My children are grown, so now my goats are my "kids".
