Recently, I have seen the term PTSD thrown around like a careless label.  It is a subject I feel very strongly about.  With all of the soldiers coming home and the ones already home, this is a REAL problem that they may or may not face.  I think people need the FACTS.

Some symptoms of PTSD include: alcholism, drug abuse (caused by feeling the need to "escape"), re-accurring vivid nightmares that make you sit up in bed swinging or screaming.  Emotional numbness, which results in problems with family, relationships, friendships, work.  Being over sensitive to situations, always feeling you must be on guard.  People need to be more understanding and compassionate.

I wrote this poem after thinking of the millions of people who are suffering from this problem;

do you ever wake in the middle of the night,
screaming in the darkness, praying for the light,
wondering if you will ever be "alright"?

do you lower your eyes, afraid of making contact,
do you hold your breath, waiting for the next impact,
do you worry about how those around you will react.

do you feel love, pain, anything at all
are your emotions locked behind a glass wall
do you put off moving forward afraid you will fall.

do you wish you could just disappear,
cease to exist or have others near,
are your daily thoughts attacked by fear.

are you lonely in a crowded room,
do you feel the darkness of certain doom
do you think the flowers in your heart will never bloom.

Please educate yourself before you judge others.

Ok i can assure you that in making this comment i definetely did not intend to offend anyone, i just found this out about him because i knew nothing about mccain, and i found it to be a interesting fact about him and i find that if someone is tortured and beaten for however long that would leave you with some mental issues and i find that to be an unstable characteristic of the next president of the USA now if that offends someone my apologies but it is my opinion............I copy and pasted this from the other blog i don't know if you saw it or not, like i said before i honestly did not see any harm in my comment, maybe i came off a little insensitive since as you stated i am not personally affected by this and if i had a better understanding my wording would have been a little different but still the fact remains i'm not sure of his stability .

Singlebutmarried, we just know all about PTSD and know the impact of it, they can be talking to you and you would never know it.
My dad has it and lived all his life with it, McCain has been in public Office for years and as I see it he is a leader, He my not be a great President, but I think he would be a better choice then Obama who my still be Muslim, a that is something I would not want...

Nobody is mad it's just a good topic.....

SBM I'm sure you didn't mean to offend anyone, it's just a sore spot with me. You don't need to apologize, like you said, it's your opinion.

Wannab - thanks. I know alot about the subject and the damage it does.

OMG gyro, this was beautiful and really said it like it is. I have been suffering from PTSD for seven years now. I always wonder if I am alone in this world. It is a scary feeling to be this way and nobody understands around you. I was "normal" before I went through the stalking and threats made against me from my ex and it has turned my world upside down. I hate the new me and I pray everyday to get out of it, but I don't know how to get over it. But thank you again. The poem is just so beautiful!

beautiful poem gyro and really good blog.
people should NOT judge others anyway but ESPECIALLY not when they have ANY kind of mental/emotional stress problems...as the saying goes "until you walk in their shoes..."
our vets - went thru more in just one or two years than any of us could fathom in a LIFEtime! and people need to understand some people can "handle" more stress than others...we should not judge or condemn those who are affected in different ways from all the different stressful situations there are in our lives!

Mental illness has a HUGE stigma attached to it. It realy makes me angry.

survivor - I'm glad the poem got the point across. hang in there.

duv - thank you for the compliment. I hesitated on posting it. Poetry is a very personal thing to me. Glad you liked it.

GREAT poem and post. It might be a good idea to post some more info on PTSD.

For those who honestly want to understand PTSD do a search on it.

SBM when I come across a new FRIEND and I am told they have a disorder I research it. I may not get the full understanding of it but I do at least get where they are coming from. so my question to you is why wouldnt you research this subject before replying to it? and if by chance you did research it maybe you should do it again. I hate to tell you more "normal" people are by far more unstable then someone with a disorder. Read the poem again but this time understand the words that are there.

Anyway Gyro Im sorry didnt mean to go lipping off on your post. It is beautiful. You are a very good person with a huge heart.

no prob cat!

super is right, your neighbor could have PTSD, your co-worker could be bipolar and your boss could have OCD, and you would never know it unless they opened up to you and told you about it. Mental illness leaves scars within, that no one can see except the one who suffers with it.
I use to be one of those people who thought others said they had depression just to make excuses for their behavior or lack of motivation, until the turmoil of PTSD touched my life.
I will NEVER judge again.

Great post gyro, I have someone extremely close to me who suffers from this. My heart goes out to everyone who's been touched by this in one way or another.

schannel - sorry to hear someone close to you suffers from this. Okay, I'm "outing" myself (if I haven't already)LOL I was diagnosed with PTSD almost 5 years ago. It's rough - trust me. I feel bad for super, he has been my main support and guiding light. The worst thing is, I use to be "normal". I just want to get back to "me".

I wrote this for super shortly after the accident. I think my poetry gives a better insight into PTSD than any fact sheet could.

You are the tiny fragment of serenity,
That finds it's way ito my broken soul-
The strength that reaches into my weakness,
Trying to make me whole.

I try not to feel but I still have a heart,
Though it may be broken and scarred-
You lend me some of your compassion,
When life is just a little too hard.

I'm tired of crying and being afraid,
These things have taken over my life-
I no longer feel I can sit and rest,
Regaining "me" is an exhausting strife.

Day by day I tell myself,
Everything will work out in the end-
I'm tired of hating the person in me,
I want to be my friend.

Hope this helps survivormom, you are NOT alone.

It does help gyro and I am sitting here with chills and crying because I used to write poems myself, but I lost all that 7 years ago. It kills me that I can't get any of that back at least not yet. I have a very special man in my life now like you have super and he too is my saviour and my strength and I have no idea how I was so lucky to find this wonderful man. I don;t think I would be here today if it were not for him. I feel bad for him every day because I can't be "normal". It is a battle you keep inside and fight with yourself everyday because you are trying to be strong to those around you, but it hits really hard when you're all alone and there is nobody around to see you fall into pieces. Oh boy here I go again. Sorry gyro. You have helped gyro and thank you for!!!

I'm so glad this helped you. I have a big problem expressing my feelings. That's why I put it down in words. I made super read these poems and tell me if they sounded stupid.:-)
I have only cried maybe 10 times in the past 5 years. I wish I could sometimes, but it feels like all my emotions are locked inside, I feel them, but for the life of me can't get them out. My kids say I am heartless sometimes, and that bothers me. It's a twisted, strange thing, because I am NOT hearless. Too many times though, my emotions come out as anger no matter what I'm feeling. I'm here for you survivor, and you are very welcome. It feels good to help someone else.

it has to be a blessing when you have someone there for you. I don't know how the PTSD affects, but I was diagnosed "chronic depressive" a few years ago & suffered a few panic attacks...it's hard when you're alone

sorry, that sounded like I was being a crybaby!
I read and called a hot-line till the panic passed...literally thank God for those 24 hour help hot lines! The people I've gotten on them have always been so NICE and helpful! I'm on zoloft now & it helps...haven't had a pa for over a year...:)

duv, you're not a cry baby. It's kind of comforting to know there ARE people out there that understand.

survivormom and witeduv - I was very leary of posting this blog, to expose a side of myself that some people in our society look down upon. I was afraid to get hateful, mean comments. I applaud you both for sharing the fact that you both have some issues to deal with. It seems I am always afraid to talk about it, but I have met some people on this site that have given me the courage (without even realizing what they did) to stand up for what I believe.

duv, you should never feel like a crybaby. It helps to beable to express yourself.

gyro, I know what you mean about being leary on posting things on here, but I have come to realize that there are people in here that put others down and say mean things because they too are hurting some way or another. Sadly I have allowed them to get to me at times, but no more. Follow your heart always gyro. You never know when you are helping someone else like you did for me. It helps knowing there are people that have similar issues. I don't care anymore what others think about me. They have not walked in my shoes and do not know how I got where I am today. So I say to you my friend keep your head up and say what you feel needs to be said. You have us to back you. :o) Plus I believe you have me email if you would like to talk more in private.

I am a homemaker. I hope to start breeding goats in the spring. I have 2 alpines, 1 nigerian dwarf, 1 pygmy, and on mix goat. My children are grown, so now my goats are my "kids".
