With gas prices choking all of us, why can't businesses that are usually open Monday thru Friday for 8 hrs a day, switch to being open Monday thru Thursday for 10 hrs a day.  Everyone would enjoy a 3 day weekend, PLUS - the demand on gasoline would drop considerably.

My husband's shop is considering doing this.  Remember when we were younger, stores were not open on Sunday?  What is wrong with going back to that concept?

We, as Americans are spoiled and wasteful.  We would all be so much better off if we could just take a few huge steps backwards.

I thought there was a law against price fixing, wouldn't the oil compaines fall into this.

I say we should tax the oil compaines and take that money and give the people another rebate check.

4 day work weeks would be great, would give me more time to work on my garden.

Sme here, Lostinohio, the medical business never shuts down!
But I think this a great idea for factories, business offices, etc.

I understand that not all businesses could do this, but for factories, businesses and stores - it IS possible. Then hopefully gas prices would be more affordable for those who work in the medical field, law enforcement, ect.

i totally agree with the 4 day work week for the business's that can do it.. as far as prices going down because of the short week that will never happen...once they got ya, they got ya! their never going to reduce their income!

The huge steps backwards is not a bad idea. However, we found out in my economics class that more time off will actually increase the amount of driving that people would do. It's much the same with increased vaction time. It's great though for the hotels and resorts.

Be very careful with the concept of price controls on gasoline. Remember what happened the last time that price controls were imposed? Long lines at the gas stations, gas every other day plus the quality of gasoline decreased!

great post gyro! I totally agree with certain stores being closed on Sunday...come on, give us ONE day without shopping! And the four-day work week would benefit a LOT of people. There are plenty of 2-income families that could use the extra day to juggle the baby-sitting!
As for gas price decrease (or at least FREEZE) I disagree with you shadow...there wouldn't be long lines if they would just set a REASONABLE price!!! but they won't because the OIL TYCOONS are GREEDY SOBS!!!!!!!!

Ah, but there WERE long lines the last time that a price freeze was imposed. The prices weren't rolled back either. Simply frozen at current the then current levels. Gas supplies decreased, stations ran out of gas and there were lines leading around the block. And could be purchased only on odd or even days depending upon the last number on your license plate.
This was not a could have happened. IT DID HAPPEN!!!

i agree with girlscout, for buinesses that could do it,but she is rite the medical field is always on the move, but if thease prices dont come down soon, we all will be walking to work

debbie - the only avenue that is profitable IMO, is milk goats, although it is not legal to sell it, you can use the milk and milk products to save yourself some money.

Americans need to prioritize. If my husband starts having 3 day weekends, I assure you we will NOT be out driving more.
Why would I waste money saved???

IF we go back to gas lines, odd/even days, maybe it will stop people from wasting!

shadow do you HONESTLY believe that JUST because they froze the prices, all of sudden there was a shortage? There has NEVER been a SHORTAGE of fuel...THEY want you to think that just so they have an excuse to keep the prices high! C'mon, you can't be that gullible!!! IF there was such a shortage back then, than how in the heck have they had so much for the past THIRTY YEARS?!?! Simple...THERE WAS NO SHORTAGE!!! Those in power can NOT be trusted!

Every little idea is a good one if enough people participated and a difference could

be made.

Not all gas stations are alike in there strategies to make a profit but in my

opinion....

Some gas stations are our worst enemy. Some claim to make 3 cents a gallon on

gas. As prices rise daily, what is in the ground I assume is paid for at a cheaper

price than what is in the tanker on the way to deliver more. It seems gas is not

just sold according to the price they bought it for. Some gas stations have their

employees drive around there immediate area surveying the price of their

competitors. Those prices are entered into the computer and submitted. Later an

email arrives with the new price the gas is to be sold for. I don't understand, the

gas is in the ground but yet a daily email has something to do with determining the

price. It seems staying competitive is more important than selling gas for the fair

price. I wonder what would happen if the gas stored in the ground at the stations

were truely stored according to demand at every station. Why have so much

more than needed on hand? Less storage would mean the refinery's would have

to slow down production and wouldn't be refining to fill all the storage spots, they

would be refining according to true demand, right? Maybe more deliveries to less

stations would lead towards lower pricing as well. Why have so many gas stations

on every corner? Gas just sitting there being stored.

On another note.... I believe....

Most gas stations could ca

On another note.... I believe....

Most gas stations could care less if you bought your gas there. Since they claim to

make around 3 cents a gallon off us their sole priority is inside sales. All of those

ready to eat sandwiches being offered at so many stations these days are a nice

profit for them. Not long ago It was suggested that 50% of every sandwich sold is

profit. Candy bars, chips and soda, may be as much as a 30% profit. Cigarettes

and gas really don't matter anymore. Many stations are pre pay because of people

driving off, loss of money. Stations know pre pay is a way to get us to come

inside. We then smell the coffee and food, a chance for an inside sale. I am sure

one cup of coffee sold (not sure what size) pays for that pot, the rest is profit. I

heard about a Speedway in Indiana I think that sold a record 3000 sandwiches in

one day. I think there could be so much more done about the price of gas if it

were the stations top priority in order to make a profit.
Gas is being offered as a side dish these days.

If I feel the need for fast food I won't buy it from a gas station.

This is my opinion and questions..... I just don't understand like most everybody

else in this world.

Getting back on topic here.... It is a great idea and anybody who can participate would be making a big difference.

duv- You are right. There never has been a fuel shortage in the United States. I was watching CNN the other day, and they were showing graphs of oil in the US that has been found as opposed to what is used. If we continue to INCREASE the amount we use, and the amount found DECREASES at the rate it has been going, we only have enough gas in the US for the next 100 - 150 yrs. Hopefully someone will come up with a better fuel source by the year 2159. :)

I am a homemaker. I hope to start breeding goats in the spring. I have 2 alpines, 1 nigerian dwarf, 1 pygmy, and on mix goat. My children are grown, so now my goats are my "kids".
