It appears that NBC is ....

From: The Washington post..

Monday, September 8, 2008; C01

MSNBC is removing Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews as the anchors of live political events, bowing to growing criticism that they are too opinionated to be seen as neutral in the heat of the presidential campaign.

David Gregory, the NBC newsman and White House correspondent who also hosts a program on MSNBC, will take over during such events as this fall's presidential and vice presidential debates and election night.

The move, confirmed by spokesmen for both networks, follows increasingly loud complaints about Olbermann's anchor role at the Democratic and Republican conventions. Olbermann, who regularly assails President Bush and GOP nominee John McCain on his "Countdown" program, was effusive in praising the acceptance speech of Democratic nominee Barack Obama. He drew flak Thursday when the Republicans played a video that included a tribute to the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks, saying that if the networks had done that, "we would be rightly eviscerated at all quarters, perhaps by the Republican Party itself, for exploiting the memories of the dead, and perhaps even for trying to evoke that pain again. If you reacted to that videotape the way I did, I apologize."

Matthews, who has criticized politicians in both parties, drew less criticism for his convention role but became a divisive figure during the primaries when he described how he was inspired by Obama's speeches and made disparaging remarks about Hillary Clinton, for which he later apologized.

In May, MSNBC President Phil Griffin said in an interview that during live events Olbermann and Matthews "put on different hats. I think the audience gets it. . . . I see zero problem."

But NBC News journalists, who often appear on the cable channel, did see a problem, arguing behind the scenes that MSNBC's move to the left -- which includes a new show, debuting tonight, for Air America radio host Rachel Maddow -- was tarnishing their reputation for fairness. Tom Brokaw, the interim host of "Meet the Press," said that at times Olbermann and Matthews went too far.

Olbermann and Matthews will remain as analysts during major political events, and officials at both networks, who declined to be identified discussing personnel moves, said Olbermann had initiated the discussions to clarify his role. They said Olbermann's influence at MSNBC would in no way be diminished and that the shift would enable him and Matthews to offer more candid analysis during live coverage. Olbermann confirmed yesterday he had initiated the discussions.

"Phil and I have debated this set-up since late winter/early spring (with me saying, 'Are you sure this flies?' and him saying, 'Yes, but let's judge it event by event') and I think we both reached the same point during the RNC," Olbermann said by e-mail.

Olbermann was involved in several on-air incidents during the conventions that drew unwanted attention. He told morning host Joe Scarborough, a former Republican congressman, to "get a shovel" as Scarborough was defending the McCain campaign. And when GOP strategist Mike Murphy was debating Matthews, Olbermann could be heard saying, "Let's wrap him up."

These and other clashes fueled a sense that conservative voices are less than welcome at MSNBC as it has tried to position itself as a left-wing alternative to Fox News Channel. Olbermann disputes this view, calling the incidents "overblown." Still, the network canceled Tucker Carlson's show in March and has diminished his role. And Dan Abrams, the veteran NBC legal analyst and former MSNBC general manager, had his program dropped last month to make room for Maddow, an Olbermann protege.

MSNBC's more liberal outlook has boosted its ratings, though it remains the third-place cable news channel. But both parties began castigating its coverage last spring. Steve Schmidt, McCain's top strategist, called the network "an organ of the Democratic National Committee," and Clinton campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe said Matthews was "in the tank" for Obama.

Just a couple of questions...

Why did MSNBC president Phil Griffin do such an about face? NBC journalist had to tell him there was a problem with objectivity?

Air America can barley keep it's head above water on AM radio, even with Al Franken  (who's recent public appearance was attended by one person.)  at the helm. I wonder how an Air America type of show will fare on a cable news channel? The already have 'Countdown' , how many more blantanly liberal shows can you fly on one channel?

Who will provide the balance (aka Allan Combs on Fox)?
Ray Scarboough? Does he still have a show on that network?

Tucker Carlson is a conservative? He sure had me fooled!

Chris Matthews (who gets tingles up his leg at the mention of Obama's name), and Keith Olbermann are THE BIGGEST JOKE not only as political analysts but as talking heads that read teleprompters - those that we call news casters on the main stream media.
Maybe (PMS)NBC see this as writing on the wall as MANY do not take them serious as a creditable news source especially with Matthews and Olbermann. Hopefully they have done this soon enough to save their reputation and their network

As much as I've always liked Joe Scarborough, he has become increasingly liberal himself over the last year.
Rumors are that Olberman will be resigned thorugh 2013. There are rumors of major battles between the NBC and MSNBC crews. Apparently the NBC folks feel they've been discredited because of their biased brothers.
The backlash is just beginning. I do think this is a political move as well though. MSNBC knows that a potential backlash on their biased coverage could cause anti-Obama sentiment. By taking care of this problem 'now', they likely hope to lessen the blow in November.

spikoli, i disagree. i think this is the tip of the iceberg.......ratings are falling all over the place for everyone BUT foxnews. and so is the number of viewers.

a few outlets will quickly change the way they have been doing things & survive, but many won't. they are too hooked on the obama train that's going nowhere.

i am hoping this will change the way the media does business finally. reporters are supposed to report facts & such, not be in the tank with some politician. LOL

ibejim & TheGalvestonSurge what is happening to the POLITICAL blog page?

I think that Olberman will keep core liberals that want to be told what they like to hear. People who seek the whole story on an issue, told in an unbiased fashion, will never take him too seriously.

"what is happening to the POLITICAL blog page?"

I don't know Stylegal. But, people who spam these pages with their blogs don't usually last to long, To me, after a while, It's like the boy who cried wolf, I simply don't even read them anymore.

Did you notice how so few people actually bother to comment in them?

"There are rumors of major battles between the NBC and MSNBC crews. Apparently the NBC folks feel they've been discredited because of their biased brothers."

I agree Surge, It's like the MSNBC clowns have developed a mob mentality in this, feeding off of each others energy/bullisht, and the NBC folks know it will jeopardize their credibility in the eyes of moderates and independents.

Howdy, dprin, I sincerely hope what you stated in your last paragraph comes to fruition!

"spikoli, i disagree. i think this is the tip of the iceberg.......ratings are falling all over the place for everyone BUT foxnews. and so is the number of viewers"

Sadly though Dprin, I think MSNBC's cheif motivation has been ratings but rather propaganda. This is an organization that is liberally motivated from top to bottom. One only has to listen to Phil Griffin to know that this is exactly the format and climate he wants. Afterall, there new programming centers around a MORE liberal base. MSNBC's thinking is that they'll tap into a large portion of viewers that prefer not to go to Fox. So even is there is a 50% share to go to Fox and CNN, MSNBC figures there's a good 30% out there that is anti-fox and they can exploit. With an election that is virtually in a dead heat right now, MSNBC feels that they appeal to that 50% on the left. In otherwords, they see themselves as the left-wing alternative.
Key phrase...
"MSNBC's more liberal outlook has boosted its ratings, though it remains the third-place cable news channel". If ratings are up, they see this as a trend.

Matthews, Olbermann and even Al Frankin are so extreme in their views that I know several moderate Democrats who roll their eyes when any of them open their mouth to speak.
No one I know takes them seriously.

And now even more people have said when the re-election of Jim Matthews comes around again (Chris Matthew's brother) up here in Montgomery Country that they will vote for anyone but him. I guess it is lunacy by association.

My concern isn't so much for those of us (or anyone) who pays attention to politics but the casual passer by which happens to be a majority of this country. Those are the folks who are influenced by the 15 second soundbytes they hear. When people like Matthews and Olberman were anchors for the Republican convention, their god-awful perspectives are presented to casual viewers as 'experts advice'. It then becomes a tool of influence.
This is why I don't think it will change. MSNBC knows that they cater to a percentage of viewers that will always exist. Even if they're called on the carpet they risk nothing by being a far left organization that wishes to attract far left viewers.

I agree Surge. Thank God MSNBC had the Lowest viewer ratings for the Republican Convention.

They will maintain the core liberal viewership that feel comfortable with the one sided presentations of Olberman and such.

I just wonder that after the flair and drama of this election is over, will they maintain enough of a viewership to support another blatantly liberal show in the vein of 'Air America'? Or, will they end up adding more prison life shows.

I hoping that since (PMS)NBC have been exposed repeatedly, that they will go the way of Air America, which is nothing but a joke radio network for the loons.

Many people thought that MSNBC was creditable, but since it has been brought to light that the owners, management, and on air personalities are void of normal intelligence, maybe those that don't follow closely will start to redirect their viewing habits.

MSNBC seems to be an albatross around the neck of those at NBC, who want to be thought of as creditable.

Breaking news tonight: Dems feel Obama is blowing it.

Haven't we seen this before? Looks like McCain found Obama's weak spot. Women! NoBama better be VERY careful what he says...of course it has become rather comical watching him keep back-pedaling. What a leader he could be!

I have a true story on Keith Olberman, told to me by someone who had to work with him when Olberman, Jim Lampley and Bree Walker were at KCBS 2 in Los Angeles. I had a video instructor back in 1987 who worked as an Associate Director for the KNXT/KCBS Channel 2 News in Los Angeles. There was a night when a satellite feed from Germany was down, and Keith Olberman, who was the sports anchor at KNXT/KCBS Channel 2 acted like the Prima Donna that he is. When the sports story came up, Keith Olberman said they were going to satellite from West Germany, knowing full well that the link was down! The folks in the control booth were beyond livid! Jim Lampley and Bree Walker (the anchors) had to save the newscast from the less than amateurish stunt that Olberman pulled. Olberman has no boundaries, and shoves his big fat bloated ego out to the public. Too bad Tim Russert is gone; he was the only one at NBC who could keep this son of a harpy under control.
