Why do smokers believe the have the right to smoke?! They pollute the air of those around them, and drivers who smoke usually litter the roads with their cigarette butts. If you so much believe you have the right to smoke in public, then act responsibly. When I consume alcohol in public, such as in a bar, I don't violate your health. And, no, I do not drink and drive. Besides, that's not the issue here. The issue is: You are affecting not only your health, but mine. Smoking causes cancer, yet people still dispute over four decades of research proving that fact. Furthermore, emphysema suffocates you. Why in the world would anyone risk their health by smoking?! Why do you think it is okay to risk mine?!

Furthermore, you knew the taxes on cigarettes and alcohol would go toward funding our professional sports complexes. If you did not want that to happen, you shouldn't have purchased those items. Stop whining and be prepared to pay the penalty for violating the law if you choose to smoke in places designated as smoke free. You will be breaking the law, and you should be punished accordingly. I, for one, cannot wait until I can enjoy going to my local bar and not having to worry about how the smoke will affect me. Yes, I don't have to go there, but why shouldn't I be able to go without becoming coated in cigarette smoke?!

The only comment I have is every one pollutes. Unless you live atop a mountain without anything. Even a fire causes pollution. Why is it that everyone feels this is ok? Electricity, burning natural gas, driving, cooking, waiste illimination etc. All cause pollution. We are all guilty in different ways.

The topic is the smoking ban, and it is a step in the correct direction. However, if you want to get off topic, blame Bush for loosening restrictions on industrial pollution. Cleveland has the sixth worst air quality in the country, thanks to Bush and the changes he made in favor of his cronies.

I don't feel this is off topic. Most people are up in arms because of the healh factors concerning smoking and inhaling smoke. All I'm saying is that smoking is one in a million reasons for our poor health. It's not right to single out one cause when there are so many. Also blaming President Bush is not exactly all right either. Everyone wants what they want. No one is willing to give up there comforts in life to aid in the pollution problem. They'll do the minimum as long as it doesn't effect them personally. So President Bush is also just one of many.

I do have a right to smoke as you do not to. I am ok with not smoking in public places, but I am not ok with not being able to smoke outside. This is just as much of my right as yours to do as I please outside. To the guy who commented this morning on the news..if everyone would just mind their own business. How true is that. As far as smoking responsibly, I see just as many beer cans and bottles thrown along the sides of roads as you see cigarette butts, but like you said that's not the issue. Like klh said there is more to pollution than smoking. This is not about any one's rights here. It's just another way of trying to control Americans.

If you smoke I say smoke them. Everything causes cancer anymore.

Oxygen is needed to live. Cigarette smoke is not. When I smell smoke inside my car coming from someone else's cigarette, their bad habit is affecting my health. Obviously, if I can smell the smoke, I am inhaling the carcinogens. I have a right not to inhale that, you do not have a right to adversely affect my health. My health is my business (even though I am not the guy who commented anywhere but here). You apparently cannot mind your own bad habit and how it affects others, so it is other people's business. Does seeing litter make it okay for you to do so?! Do you throw trash in your own yard? How would you like it if others threw their trash in your yard? You're wrong, it's about my right not to inhale cancer-causing agents; you don't have a right to pollute my air. Why do so many people justify their poor behavior by pointing to everyone else. I thought the Bushies were about personal responsibility. I'm not seeing it here. I suppose the little child in the photo should just give up on life because the adults certainly don't have the ability to show any shining examples of why it is better not to smoke than to smoke.

imrandy.. do you drink? do you know how many cancer causing agents you inhale when you take a drink? Do you know how mant cancer causing agents you expose yourself to when you drive in your car and smell my smoke? You probably have no idea do you?

Please get off your soap box and get over yourself... You are going to die of cancer if you smoke or not.

If you don't want to smell my smoke then stay away from me.

chemist don't you know that drinking doesn't kill people? Duh. All the pollution that people take in on a day to day basis isn't what is the problem. It is a little bit of second hand smoke that some people might inhale that is polluting the world and killing everyone.

My boyfriend works downtown and he was sitting on the steps outside his building and a couple people were smoking, he does but not at the time. Anyway this older women comes walking past and puts her shirt over her nose and mouth so she wouldn't inhale the smoke. IT IS DOWNTOWN! The smoke is probably better for her to breath in then all the pollution down there from smoke stacks and everything else that was burned.

I am just sick of the hypocritical non-smokers.

All you non-smokers: BEWARE! You may be glad smoker's rights have been taken away, but someday YOUR rights will be taken away and then you'll be complaining of the unfairness too! Who knows what it will be? No cell phone usage in cars? But, you say, it's your car and your phone and you're not hurting anyone? Yeah, unless ;you cause an accident and kill someone! You will all get your turn and then you'll be crying too!

Speaking of trash. You might not have trash being thrown directly in your yard but your trash is going in the local land fills which is located in someones back yard. Not to mention the toxins that are released into the atmosphere on a daily basis from these land fills. Or the fires that burn in them under the ground. Another example of pollutants. As I said everyone is guilty.

klh-right you are!
I'm not going to say smoking is a wonderful thing because we are all aware of the dangers, but as you said everything you breathe around you is bad for you, everything you eat is bad, on and on I could go. I'm sure NOT condoning(sp) smoking but I am really tired of hearing about the non smokers rights blah blah already.

Yes - this topic is getting very old. I think there are more worthy causes out there right now to complain about other than this worn out topic, don't you?

I just have to say something on the taxes on cigarettes going to stadiums. You are very much missing the point. I am a non smoker I think it is very wrong to constantly target one group of people anytime somebody wants money for something. Just like the arts. They want the money so they target one group of people. That is wrong and hypocritical especially since you won't give them a designated place to smoke. Considering how much money a professional sports team brings in why do they need any sort of tax money.

It is WRONG to target one group of citizens. How would you like it if they constantly targeted something you buy to fund something. I doubt you like it.

THANK YOU!!! imrandy, I've been telling people for years now that I'm indestructable, and will never get sick or die. I grew up in a house with two smokers, my Dad smokes 2pcks a day my mother only one. They smoked in the house and the car with me thier child with them. They still curently smoke and are relativly healthy for 70 and 73. I'm now a smoker of going on 15 years and it gives me pleasure. Plus as of my last check up I'm perfectly heathly. So either I'm superhuman or you nicotine Nazis have got you facts twisted. I tried to be respectful nonsmokers rights but this nazi smoking ban pissed me off so I'm lighting everywhere now. average police response time, 20-30 min. my cigerette and I will be gone in 5 thanks and have a nice day.

I don't like when businesses or governement building have nicely landscaped areas to take breaks, and there were many different ash trays around, yet every place I would go there would be cigarette butts around, sometimes right next to the trays, I think the smokers were being very obnoxious when it came to smoking, as they would crowd the doorways so that I couldn't take breaks outside when it was a nice day out, and they would get extra breaks every day, on average about 45 minutes extra they would spend chatting with the supervisor or teacher while the rest of us were forced inside or have to put up with that trully awful smell

I'm amazed at how the topic of smoking draws the most response from people. It's a freaking stupid, unhealthy habit. I don't care that you are still alive after 'x' amount of years of smoking--you apparently have the right genes for not getting cancer. And for all you people who are convinced that everyone has to die of cancer, grow a freakin' brain! You are complaining about SMOKING! Is it really that gosh darn important to you?! If you had to give up something in your life, you wouldn't give up smoking?! You are extremely weak people! Blow that freakin' smoke up your *sses! I won't breathe you BLEEP if you keep it the h*ll away from me. Don't tell me where I can breathe, I'll tell you where you can smoke--in H*LL!
