If you were to donate $1 million, who would you donate it to?

Which charities come to mind? The Red Cross, The Shriner's Hospitals? Doctors Without Borders? Harvesters? Make a Wish Foundation?

There certainly are a lot of good ones, aren't there? But what about this one: The US federal government? Would you consider writing a check for $1 million to the welfare system?

If not, are you in favor of the welfare state? If you would not donate the money to the welfare department, but you are in favor of our welfare system, is it because you're donating someone ELSE'S money to the welfare system every time you vote?

Most people would never consider donating a dime to the welfare department,  yet for some reason we can't seem to get rid of it. Comments?

Welfare reform is one of my highest priority issues. Unfortunately none of the candidates seem concerned about it. I believe everyone on welfare should be REQUIRED TO WORK! If the best they can do is minimum wage then fine welfare could supplement your income but why should we pay lazy ass people for sitting home on their asses? Instead of giving someone 1500 or more a month in benefits if they work and make 1000 a month then welfare could help them with 500 a month instead. Saving the taxpayers 1000 a month per welfare recipient!

My daughter just had a baby and as a single mom makes 8.50 an hour. There is no way she can pay her bills, buy food and pay daycare on that. Welfare said she makes too much to get any help but they sure will help the lazy ass doing NOTHING! They will be forcing her to become one of those lazy asses just to get by.

"Instead of giving someone 1500 or more a month in benefits if they work and make 1000 a month then welfare could help them with 500 a month instead."

But then the worker has to find transportation to and from work and reasonably priced (ha!) child care. And don't forget having to buy clothes and keep them laundered. Plus there's the daily cost of bathing, etc.

So I can see where working takes too much time, energy and money, and the former worker now has it easier staying at home.

But how the heck do they pay their bills, when I work full-time and yet my family lives paycheck to paycheck?

Sick, can I ask how your daughter got herself into this situation? Did her husband leave her, or did she choose to get pregnant while she was single and making $8.50 an hour?

Some of you seem to be missing my point. My point is that welfare will reward people who are too lazy to work by giving them A LOT of help instead of helping people who are willing to work but just need a little help.

sickandtired:I understand your point but YOU are also missing the point that YOUR daughter has to be accountable for her choices as well.

Odessa, your right but I would rather MY tax dollars pay for MY daughter who is willing to work than some lazy ass who wants to get paid to sit home on their lazy asses! I believe in giving people a hand up NOT a hand out.

Welfare=being paid to sit around and have babies.
I think the whole system should be abolished. I can't stand the sob stories of I don't have a car so can't get a job or I have too many kids and can't afford daycare so I can't get a job.
Those people were lazy and made poor choices in life they shouldn't be rewarded with a welfare check.
Without welfare there wouldn't be anymore "Help Wanted" signs up at the McDonalds.
