We all know about the war on tobacco. We hear about the smoking bans going into effect all over the city, we hear cries every year in the state and federal legislature to raise the taxes on tobacco. Kansas has even considered a statewide smoking ban. All of this is done of course in the name of discouraging tobacco use.

On one hand proponents of higher taxes and more restrictions on tobacco claim they want the industry out of business. On the other hand, they have made our social programs dependent on this revenue (see: SCHIP for example). To make matters even more convoluted, we continue to subsidize tobacco farmers.

But with more and more people quitting smoking, and the rising cost of obesity - doesn't it make sense to start taxing junk food? Obesity will soon cost us more than smoking, if it doesn't already. I hereby propose bans on eating junk food in any establishment open to the public. I don't want my kids seeing someone eat a piece of pie. I also propose a $10.00 tax per bag of 5lb sugar, and a $5.00 tax on every candy bar. Furthermore, the obese should be required to pay extra on their income taxes - $50.00 for each pound of excess fat.

All of this money will of course go to the children. It can be used to fund programs like SCHIP (despite the fact that over 600,000 ADULTS receive SCHIP) and educational programs aimed at teaching kids the evils of junk food.

If you disagree with this, it means you don't like children and you think they should all be fat. So what do you say? Should we tax the crap out of junk food and ban it in public places, or let our kids die premature deaths?

[editor's note: for those who cannot seem to pick up on it, THIS IS SARCASM, but based on the truth]

My thoughts on banning smoking is that it will more than likely turn out like prohibition. I believe smoking shouldn't be allowed in public, but what about drinking that leads to driving drunk which leads to death. I also cant help to think of New Yorks decision to not send formula home with new parents. They breed into the minds of mothers breatsfeeding is they only way. If a mother cant they feel like a failure. It goes on and on, where is the line drawn? Just a thought :-)

butterfly- these smoking bans are not in public places, they're on private property (bars and restruants).

Well, it would be helpful if you first shut down the feeding troughs like Ryans and Ponderosas that pack in entire generations of families that sit there for hours eating plateful after plateful of food. UUUGH!

Raise the price for pizza street... $3.99 for all you can eat pizza! It's not good pizza but when I walk in there and see the masses eating masses I feel compelled to pile it up to get my $3.99's worth.
After one pizza party at that place a child could get addicted.

$3.99 at pizza street is a rip off. In fact I think it's about $3.99 too much.

What about the underweight among us who need to eat more calories/carbs/whatever in order to not be unhealthily underweight?

No, sadly, I am NOT one of the underweight - I'll be paying the full tax. And gladly.

Years ago I called Nabisco and asked why their Oreos and Chips Ahoy didn't taste the same (perhaps my tastebuds had changed, I figured). They informed me that they had taken out the cholesterol.

Cookies are NOT a freakin' health food, I told them. PUT BACK MY CHOLESTEROL! PUT BACK MY TASTE!

I don't plan to live long, but I sure would like to enjoy the tastes of life along the way. Otherwise, what's the point?

One other thought to ponder. The more you weigh, the more gas your car will use to get from one place to another.

JP~ Love the sarcasm man. I've read all your posts and mostly agree with them. You know, every day our country falls closer and closer into the pits of wealth governed comunistic society without the benifits. I think if the founding fathers of this country were alive today they'd start the revolution all over again.

No question in my mind about that Biker (founding fathers).

They threw the boston tea party over far less than we live with on a daily basis.

Most of our problems stems from the mistaken idea that we are a "democracy" and that the majority should always get what it wants.

We are NOT a democracy, we are a constitutional republic.
