I see a lot of complaining about gas prices here on the blog. I've had it out with many of you in friendly debates about the cause of the increases in prices. Regardless of who you blame, there is something you can do about it.

BUY A BIKE!

As my blog name indicates, biking is the love of my life, so this is a no brainer for me. I ride anything on 2 wheels. I've got 2 road bicycles, a Trek and a Cannondale, a Schwinn Mountain bike, a Honda Shadow crusier, and the latest edition to my collection, a Rakatak enduro.

I bought the Rakatak brand new for $1450.00 delivered to my door. I got it last night. It did require about an hour or two of assembly, but once I got it put together, it started right up and took off!

As soon as i get it tagged, I'll be riding it every day to work. It gets 70mpg. I commute 7 miles each way every day. By my calculations, that's one gallon of gas a week to commute.

I used to ride my bicycles to work, but it's become impractical since I have to haul a laptop, take a shower, etc. But at 70mpg, I can easily justify the motor.

So now I'm taking pride in knowing that my reduced gas consumption is not only saving me money, but it's probably one less hand grenade in the hand of a terrorist, since a considerable amount of our oil comes from OPEC nations - most notable Saudi Arabia - who funds all the modrassas that turn out these terrorists.

I'm not trying to be self righteous here - but please consider a two wheeler if you can. The demand will drop, and so will the price. And in the meantime, maybe there will be a few less bullets flying in the middle east.

e-mail me if you want to find out more about the bike I bought - jpbikerfreak@yahoo.com

jp - I would love to ride a bike to work, where did you find the above bike at. Other one I was going to look at was the Vespa. My only problem is I can not get to work without getting on a highway or a heavily travelled road, I-435, 210, 152, Front Street. The main back road access is currently missing about a half-mile of road. Pleasant Valley Road.

I haven't taken this one out on the highway yet, but, as much as I love it, I don't think I really want to.

It could be done, but you'd have a hard time keeping up I suspect. Mfr. claims a top speed of 75, reviews say more like 65. I'm sure it all depends on conditions.

Sounds like a winner to me...do they come with four car seats? LOL

Personally I would LOVE to own a motorcycle...I love the feel of total freedom on one, however, inclimate weather would be a female pooch...=)

Thanks JP - will check with the insurance folks too. Not a bad price.

I highly recommend progressive.

I think it's like $50.00 per year for liability on this bike.

Will look at progressive, but have cars and house through the same insurance, so will look there first.

Buy a bike and an accompanying heart attack or crash with an automobile that goes with it in this town.

Check out the Mike Hendricks story in the Star 06/16 about biking at Longview Lake with Mr. Bondon and his giant Hummer running over the cyclists.
Charged with non aggravated assault by the way.

Cars and bikes clearly do no get along in this metro area.

mpvan, sadly, "intolerance" seems to be the name of the game nowadays. Why do drivers in cars think they have more rights on the roadways than bikes (motorized or peddle-powered)? Isn't there room for everyone?? We all pay for the roads so why can't all have the same rights to the roads?

I love to discuss political philosophy. The problem I have is that liberals often assume I'm conservative and convserervatives often assume I'm liberal. It's because I'm neither. I'm libertarian, which means I believe in both social and economic freedom. I don't do personal attacks. I won't respond to yours, and I won't initiate one against you. So save yourself some time if you're thinking of flaming me!
