It's motorcycle season. That means that people like me, WingMan, biker-terry, jewwelsp and many other of our friends here will be out on bikes alot. In fact I ride nearly every day. I'm going to say this here to everyone because I'm tired of hearing it from other people directed toward me: BE CAREFUL.

It seems almost every day I get told by someone who has never ridden a bike that I should ride careful. Well guess what? 2/3 of the time in a car on bike accident, it's the CAR DRIVER'S FAULT. So maybe we bikers should be telling YOU non-bikers to be careful?

Furthermore, if I wanted to be careful I wouldn't ride a bike. I live my life for freedom, not security. I'd rather die like a man than live like a BOOGEDY. However I don't have a death wish either. So please spare me the endless stories of bike wrecks. We don't want to hear it, we don't care. I don't care what you saw 20 years ago. I don't care if you or your sister is an ER nurse. I don't care what you think about me or my bike or my lack of D.O.T. approved helmet.

The point is, statistically idiotic car drivers are taking us out at an alarming rate, then hypocritically blaming it on US either directly or indirectly. Then we have to listen to their horror stories, and how crazy and/or stupid we are. We're not stupid just because we're bikers. We're not "riding a donor mobile". We're living our lives the way we want to live them.

"We must be careful, so that we will arrive at death safe and sound".

Now there' some cannon fodder for the blog. With the helmet reference and my attitude, I be tthis one goes over 20 posts....  LOL

I think they just like to nag.

Don't you ever get people harping on you about smoking?

Oh, and you of course already know all of the arguments in my arsenal on this subject searching, but for the rest:

If you are obese, you must say so before posting to this thread. I love it when 300 pound people tell me how much I'm costing them in health insurance premiums and how dangerous biking is.

Especially when obesity kills are more people than bike wrecks.

Yeah, people harp on me about smoking... It does suck.. I will quit when I am ready..

and you obese people need to stay outta ponderosa, and ryans. and all the other feeding troughs around town.. geeeezz.

When you get up from a chair and you have bruised half way across your arse where the chair ended it is time to push away from the dinner plate a little more often.. not keep refilling it OVER and OVER and OVER.. and then there's dessert.....

It's not yet acceptable to rail on obesity, searching. There's safety in numbers you know.

Once the obese become a minority it will become acceptable to outlaw their junk food, tax their fat, make snide comments about their poor hygene, etc.

But for now we have to stick to just smokers and bikers that don't wear helmets.

Oh and how could I leave out suing them and giving them a name such as "BIG something"?

jp, long ago, I used to ride a full-dress Harley. Then I rode Hondas for a bit. Havn't wrode since the 80's and I sure miss it. Now that I think about it, most of the people in cars were very cautious of us on 'bikes'. There were some jerks, and we just let them go about their business of rudeness and left them alone. I always wore a helmet. I'm not obese and I don't smoke. (rofl)
I'm very courteous of bikers and everytime I see a group of bikers I'm star struck.

Well said, I have been riding my motorcycle for 12 years now, and have had MANY close calls from people to damn busy eating, reading the paper, cell phone gossiping, or doing their make-up. PAY ATTENTION PEOPLE!! MYSELF AND MY WIFE BOTH RIDE, AND HAVE ONE HELL OF AN ATTORNEY IF YOU HIT US!! I WOULD NOT HESITATE TO PROSECUTE YOU AND TAKE YOU TO CIVIL COURT IF YOU ARE DOING ANY OF THE ABOVE!

"The point is, statistically idiotic car drivers are taking us out at an alarming rate, then hypocritically blaming it on US either directly or indirectly. Then we have to listen to their horror stories, and how crazy and/or stupid we are."

That's the "blame the victim" mentality we see more and more often these days, PLUS a refusal to take responsibility for one's own actions. (The last ticket I got - turned left in front of too-close oncoming traffic many years ago - the cop was flabbergasted that I said, "Oh, yeah, I did it. It's my fault. Give me the ticket.")

Yes!!!!!! Watch Out for all the Motor Cycles. Many people are buying them since Gas Prices have went way up. My Youngest Son is one of them. I worry very much about him on his motorcycle. However, I would also like to remind you all of the People who work out on the interstates, risking their lives every day so we all have smooth and safe roads to drive on. My Friend Mike York was Killed on Wed the 11th of June. We buried him today, Saturday the 14th. Run over by an 18 wheeler. Now I am not saying the driver of the 18 Wheeler was at fault, However...... Just because the speed LIMIT is 45 or 70.... Does NOT MEAN WE ARE SUPPOSE TO DRIVE THAT FAST. That is ONLY the speed limit. We All MUST SLOW DOWN AND ENJOY LIFE. May God Be with Mike and his Family and Friends. God Willing I retire in Two weeks. I am getting the heck away from the interstate. I will Miss my Job. It is very very rewarding in so many aspects but to VERY VERY dangerous for me to stay. I also am going to miss my co workers All Of Them. Be they from Road Enhancement, Maintenance, Bridge Crew, Signals, Lightening, RE Construction, Our Main office folks and Supervision in charge of them all. I want to Personally Thank Beth Wright of District 4. She is our District Engineer, for her true heart and caring for all of us. You Go Beth and Thank You.

There IS a flip side to this coin. I see idiots on crotch rockets weaving in and out of traffic, popping wheelies, driving between lanes of traffic. So WHEN these Bozos get killed by one of the cars/trucks they cut off, are you going to blame the car/truck driver for not looking out for them?

"k9stylist1968", you hit the nail on the head. The crotch rockets are the MAIN problem with bikes. They are the ones giving ALL bikers bad names. They ride like idiots and EXPECT that cars and trucks should look out for them. WRONG! I have made it a point to get these pricks off, and force them to pay attention to the rules of the road. For some reason, most Harley riders seem to know the rules of the road. I have NEVER had a problem with any rider on a Harley, NEVER.

lmatt, ya just need to get out more. I see idiotiso's on Harley's too. Heck ride as much as I have you'll have seen lots of idiots on every type of vehicle you can think of.

The whole point is, be on the look out. Like mecow said, there are many more of us rider's out every day.

A lot of distractions for today's driver of a car: phones, make-up, dvd players, navigation system, bratty kids, wife/husband in the back seat/front seat suggesting how to drive, lost people, new drivers, lost drivers.

Those things convinced me to quit over 20 years ago. That, after riding around the country/both coasts and to Canada about 4x.

Far too many examples of: "Oops I didn't see him." Not the legacy or the way I want to check out.
