Congress' approval is the lowest of any U.S. institution

Ok we hear it on this blog, on the news, in the op-ed pieces of the newspapers, at the water cooler, and everywhere else. People have a very cycnical attitude toward government, and congress in particular.

Yet these same people constantly RE-ELECT the same congressmen they claim to have no confidence in.

Congress enjoys a re-election rate of 96-98% on average. And to add fuel to the fire, it seems people want more and more government every day. They don't think government can do anything, so they propose government solutions. And they CONTINUE to allow the two party monopoly on power in the false hopes that anything will ever really change. What's going on here?

My theory is that people have figured out how to vote their neighbors money into their own pockets. MY congressman brings home the pork, he's not the problem. It's the other 434 that are taking my money for their districts.

I for the life of me can't come up with any other explanation. What about you all?

Theories?

It doesn't always happen that way, jp. My district voted out our no-good Congressman two years ago and elected a woman, Nancy Boyda, who votes her own mind and represents her constituents, in that order I believe. She rejects the trappings of Washington and any of the goodies that lobbyists strew around. In fact, since she went to Washington she has asked people of her own party not to include her in all these invitations to the constant stream of parties given by lobbyists who just want to rub elbows with members of congress. She states that she doesn't intend to attend the Democratic convention because she knows it's going to be just more of the kind of stuff she tries to avoid.

Having said all of that, the question is, "Can someone that independent get reelected?" I don't know, but I'm going to try and see that she does.

As a postscript, although she's a "superdelegate" she avoided getting involved in the Presidential primary season. She only recently came out in support of Obama. She was prompted to do that by all of the ugly smears she was constantly hearing about him, including from her own father. She is committed to speaking out against that kind of politics as well.

We'll see if someone like her can maintain a position in this crazy system. I'm on her side.

Well, there you have it.
An institution (Congress) that makes President Bush look good! Way to go Pelosi et al.

Rhonda,
There was a black congressman from Oklahoma (can't remember his name), but he was a Republican, went to D.C. proclaiming to never become a part of the Beltway groupies! He announced that he will not run for re-election because, as he put it, he can't get anything to change. I wish your congresswoman good luck.

That's JC Watts Jdog.

Rhonda, nope, it doesn't always happen that way. Just 98% of the time.

"Having said all of that, the question is, "Can someone that independent get reelected?" Rhondaj, I think the bigger question (given how Washington DC works)is can anyone that independent get anyting accomplished?

I think I’d be ashamed to go to work or to show my face in public if I had a public approval rating lower than that of an ACLU attorney.

I'd like to see them all with a GPS system shoved up where the sun don't shine that actually records not only where they are by everything they say, and who they're talking to. Complete accountability reported to a individual web site for anyone to check o. Kinda like what they what to do to us.

I wish they'd STOP accomplishing things personally.

The problem is government in the first place. It's the nature of the beast. Always has been and always will be.

But people's faith in it never seems to waiver, and they always want more.

Not me. I do not want more. I want less. I do not want more freebies, more stupid laws, no more bills to change what we have, and no more idiots elected, but seems we have few good men or women to vote for anymore.

Protecting the weak from the strong is the only real purpose of government. Now the general public is being victimized, because of it's own apathy, by it's government. We face a greater danger from within than any terrorist threat from outside, Well, we've done a pretty good job of stirring up the rage outside, but to continue the way we've been going will ensure both a collapse from within and attack from outside. We need a fresh start, with a government that promotes liberty for what it really is, a personal responsibility,by defending equality and justice.

Well said linecrosser.

Except I'd say defending personal rights, not equality.

Equality is a guaranteed result. I prefer a guaranteed opportunity.

Not everyone is equal. Some people are deadbeats and a drain on society and were born to be poor. They should be taxed for lack of productivity in my opinion.

Free people are not equal - and equal people are not free.

I do not remember who said it - but it is accurate.

Equal opportunity is what separates one person from the next. Laws that protect one, at the expense of another, is not free or equal. But that's what we have here in America now. Well to some degree, it's always been that way but now it's to the extreme.

It can be explained very simply. Generally an elected official wins by more than 50%. Therefore the majority of their area supports them. Thus a built in majority. So a minority of people are against them only.

With that said many studies and polls proven that the average voter believes Congress is worthless and that all the legislators should be voted out....EXCEPT THEIR LEGISLATOR.

Now take that thinking and multiply it 535 times every few years and thus most of them are re-elected without trouble.

It is the same mentality with kids. Most parents will gripe about everyother kid on earth as being bad, etc...but their kid is perfect. Same works for government...sadly

All my years, I was thinking that only our kind of government is the worst of all. I thought, peoples in each of their own nationality, including yours, enjoy having political leaders functioning at their brightest, positive human senses. Now,after reading yours, I have one great negative thing about these (concerned)political figures. They're all but dogs vying for a bone.

I love to discuss political philosophy. The problem I have is that liberals often assume I'm conservative and convserervatives often assume I'm liberal. It's because I'm neither. I'm libertarian, which means I believe in both social and economic freedom. I don't do personal attacks. I won't respond to yours, and I won't initiate one against you. So save yourself some time if you're thinking of flaming me!
