OK I'm not going to go into all the rants I have about bad English. I won't go off about how it's  NOT 10 itmes or LESS, it's 10 items or FEWER, or similar everyday mistakes. That's just run of the mill, somewhat understandable ignorance. Nope. Today's topic deals with something far simpler: 2nd person pronouns.

People this is not difficult. He/She Him/Her They/Theirs, I/me.. When do we use each one?

Did her and her friend go to the store? Did she go to the store with her friend and I? Did I get there as fast as her? These are ALL incorrect.

For some reason, when you throw the word AND in a sentence, everything goes to hell in a handbag. Take the above sentences for example. Let's remove the AND and see how they sound.

Her went to the store. She went to the store with I. I got there as fast as her DID (did is implied, but when you add it in, it sounds ridiculous).

But it gets even worse. There's the invention of new words, such as I's. Yes, I's. His car is cooler than my friend's or I's. Does that one really need an explanation? His car is cooler than his friends or MY car?

Ok finally, let's move on to singular and plural. HE is singular, THEY is plural. If A PERSON (one, singular) goes to the store, HE buys something. THEY don't buy anything, unless he has an imaginary friend I guess. There's only ONE PERSON. Got it?

When someone rants about bad English, HE will probably get flamed on the internet. Politically incorrect? Maybe - but gramatically, it IS correct. There is really no word in the English language for generic 2nd person singular pronoun. You HAVE to say HE OR SHE, him or hers, or - like the idiotic politically correct textbooks I read - alternate between the two every other paragraph.

xanax.

Don't need any, I've got plenty!

But seriously, how hard is it? I mean is it really that difficult to speak correctly with an AND in the sentence? We're not talking quantum physics here.

Oh wait, that requires thought and effort.

Wow this really put`s a bug in your craw...but you are correct! Everyday speaking and writing and mannerism`s are a thing of the past.I get lazy myself and I am not very good at proper writing.Sometimes the thoughts come out in perfect English, and instead of checking my spelling and all the other proper writing skills,I get nailed by somebody who expects perfection from an imperfect person,it`s usually my wife who catches my errors.

JPbiker, Every day I run into this. And it's usually someone who is a checker me out @ the store. "Have a goohhhh one". Or using the word 'They' instead of 'their.' I caint instead of Can't...Wash instead of warsh is a biggie w/ my mothers' generation. He don't, instead of doesn't...And AINT fell in a bucket of paint. It shows the igornance of people when they can't speak english well.

You'd be surprised at the lengths people go to justify their bad grammar and spelling. Almost to entitlement levels.

Similar to smoking and obesity.

Most of these folks in the past have been critical of the immigrants inability to learn English or the general shortcomings of the public schools. The writing ability of these posts hovers around the 2nd and 3rd grade level.

You are correct, right is right.

You`d,now is that even a word?If you are going to dog on the writing skills in this blog spellcheckman check your own,it should be you would, instead of you`d. I probably do write at 2nd or 3rd grade level and so do others ,but I really could care less as long as I can get their point that is all that matters to me.Not trying to justify anything I figure if it bothers people to read and go off the deep end over writing skills then they are the ones who show the grade school mentality.,we are not in school and we are not being graded on our writing skills.Does it make you feel better about yourself to put down others? Maybe you have more education than some folks, and if so you do not need to belittle others who do not.

Part of the problem we have with the proper usage of the English language is immigration. Those coming to this country that didn’t speak English didn’t learn English well and their way of use our language was a composite or merger of languages, which over time fell into common usage. A similar problem is seen regionally. People from different parts of the country speak differently; it’s known as dialect. Even linguist have a difficult time sorting them all out. How eloquently or proper speaks, is not always as important as what is being said. Too often the true meaning is lost in the expressive oratory. Look at Obama. He speaks well, but I find his speeches ambiguous, and I can't count the number of times I've heard him use the phrase, "You all."

Plato once said (paraphrasing): Wise men speak because they have something to say. Fools speak because they have to say something. That’s as true today as it was in Plato’s time.

I don't always speak correctly since I always have a problem with a preposition at the end of a sentance (or sennance as all the TV broadcasters say). However, really bad grammar is what makes me cringe. Our office manager not only comes in to work every day in her 'Sunday-go-to-tractor pull' clothes, but I heard her tell our I.T. guy the other day "I don't got nothin' on my computer screen". Arrrrgh!
