I told you all that this was coming. In the 1970s gas prices rose after the Arab oil embargo. It wasn't very long afterward that everything else started to go up as well. Now MGE is going to raise our prices $100 - $200 over the course of next winter. Look for elecrricity to follow suit. This is GREED at work folks!

It's not as easy for electricity companies to raise their rates. They have to go through a rate case with the regulatory commission in each state so it won't happen as quick as the gas companies but yes it is probably inevitable.

Everything is going up yet the government and the economists continue to tell us that there is no recession based on their economic models and the economy has just slowed a bit. Well I think their technical models are flawed and this is going to get worse before it gets better. People are really starting to struggle and crime will rise because desperate people will take desperate measures to put food on the table.

Everything IS going up for sure...in my line of work(home daycare) I have been avoiding raising my rates..because families are struggling and shopping comparatively even for childcare...however I am the cheapest around and I just know people are cutting corners any way they can to have their standards of living remain the same.
I don't raise my rates, but people are saying we should..cost of food, utilities and what not..I dunno.
I am just glad to earn any money at all and support myself from home.

Dow Chemical will raise their prices 20%. Their product is in everything, food, plasics, petro products, that covers just about everything an American consumer would buy.

Here in Va. their is always a rate increase in front of the power that be, the regulators just need a reason to approve it. Now they have it, and just granted a 18% increase. There is already the next proposed increase on the table. In this type of economy the last adjustments made will be in wages. and then it won't match the increase in the cost of living, well unless your a congressman or CEO or any other member of the powers that be.

Twister, I applaud your efforts in keeping your rates where they are, but the day will come. Don't feel bad when it happens. Your expenses will go up, and your rates will have to follow. The service industry should make a 20% profit margin. The bandwagon effect as in the original post is amplified when the powers that be raise their rates in anticipation of a increase in costs. Or the industries that aren't affected as much by energy cost as those that are directly effected. Paper pushing industries who benefited greatly with the computer often figure the prices on percentages of income rather than cost to provide. They will jump on the bandwagon and raise rates before they feel any actual increase in expenses. And the increase will be based on the rate of inflation not on the actual increase in costs. Retail stores will raise the price of items on the selves to match the cost of of new inventory rather than the cost of what the existing inventory was purchased at. If you wait until your expenses go up then you have nothing feel guilty about. It would be better than you closing your doors and forcing your customers to seek more expensive service elsewhere. Thank you, for being a businessperson with ethics, and morals.

independant. If anyone wants to correspond directly with me you can do so at jstol3@netzero.com. I see myself as both a conservative and a conservationist. I despise wastefulness but I don't want environmentalists telling me how to live my life. I'm all for a free market system except when it comes to energy. This is a monopoly thast needs to be regulated! I diverge from most conservatives when it comes to abortion and stem cell research as I belive in freedom of choice and scientific progress as I believe that we were given a brain to think with. Knee jerk reactions and one issue politics turn me off. I am both a Vietnam veteran and former Vietnam war protester (we should have been allowed to win). I am an advocate of the war in Iraq (as long as we do what we have to to win) and the war on terror.
