We vote. We elect our representatives.

After we vote the lobbiests swoop in. They bring in big bucks provided by corporations. The bucks buy votes on corporate issues. Issues voted on by politicians bought off by corporate bucks decide price increases. Issues voted on by politicians bought off by corporate bucks decide available jobs and wages.

We, the people, are constantly kept scrambling to keep our heads above water and we can't win because wages always follow price increases so we can't get ahead and we don't have enough energy left to fight the system so we just keep scrambling to stay ahead of the bill collector, the landlord, the mortgage holder, and the purveyor of fuel that we all have to have just to get back and forth to work so we can earn that money to pay just to live.

Our system needs to be fixed folks, we need to outlaw corporate lobbiests. We need to follow through with our election day vote and make sure that our politicians represent us and not corporations and carry out the "will of the people".

Let your elected representatives know that you will be watching how they vote and who they cozy up with and let them know that you want a halt to corporate lobbying at the city, county, state and national levels.

I keep hearing that we can't exist without the corporations that provide the jobs. The reverse is also true - those corporations can't exist without workers either. Let your representatives at all levels know that only corporations who hire Americans and who don't ship jobs overseas should receive favorable tax considerations.

I am not a socialist, communist or Marxist but enough is enough we are being raped by corporate America with the blessing of the people we elected to represent us!

Spend a billion to get elected for a $400,000/yr job, I wouldn't expect anything else. It should get worse as the price tag increases. Mostly in the form of specialized tax breaks.

You know the problem is, jstol, people don't care.

Reps DO LISTEN when their phone rings off the hook form their constituency. But nobody bothers to call, let alone e-mail.

So our elected officials have nothing to really go on.

People DO respond to show-biz, feel-good legislation, etc., and the lobby money pays for all that. Case in point - barak. The guy is all style and no real substance. You could probably auction off zip lock baggies of his farts on e-bay and get rich people love him so much.

Bottom line, it's the people's fault. They let this happen, and they're (we're) going to get what we deserve.

And I'll add a few more observations-

People are pre-occupied with federal events. For example, we've got about 15,000 voters in my state house district. About 20 show up at the town hall meetings.

I'll bet 14,000 of them couldn't even name their rep or senator. Of the 1,000 that can, I bet 500 have never made a single phone call or written a single letter.

For all you who complain on here - let me ask you:

Do you know your state rep and senators names? Governor? Do you even know your US rep and senators?

Do you call or write them?

Do you ever track bills through the legislature?

When was the last time you ever actually READ a law? (the full text of the statute)

Elections are least admirable part of our system. Yet that's all people seem to focus on.

We're a constitutional republic people, not a democracy. Get involved. It's more than just voting every 4 years based on 2 minutes worth of soundbites.

jp -

I could not have said it better. People need to become involved. Make phone calls, send e-mails, and snail mail.

In the past month alone I have had replys to my contacts from Emmanuel Cleaver, Roy Blunt (Matt's dad), Kit Bond, Claire McCaskill, and Jolie Justus. You can tell who listens by who replies. Some are better than others but you can bet that they all "keep their finger on the pulse" of their constituency.

I know for a fact they do, because I actually know some of them.

You make their phone ring and they sit up in their chairs, trust me.

independant. If anyone wants to correspond directly with me you can do so at jstol3@netzero.com. I see myself as both a conservative and a conservationist. I despise wastefulness but I don't want environmentalists telling me how to live my life. I'm all for a free market system except when it comes to energy. This is a monopoly thast needs to be regulated! I diverge from most conservatives when it comes to abortion and stem cell research as I belive in freedom of choice and scientific progress as I believe that we were given a brain to think with. Knee jerk reactions and one issue politics turn me off. I am both a Vietnam veteran and former Vietnam war protester (we should have been allowed to win). I am an advocate of the war in Iraq (as long as we do what we have to to win) and the war on terror.
