Who should we blame for current fuel prices?

Is it the auto manufacturers? The pre WWII standard for fuel economy was 20 mpg. What is it today - 26, 28, 30 mpg? Do we seriously believe that they could improve only this much in 57 years? (1941 - 2008)

Is it OPEC? OPEC member nations triggered the first round of price increases with the Arab oil embargo in 1973 and taught the other OPEC member nations how much clout they had.

Is it the oil companies taking advantage of an already bad situation and who have been posting record profits and who, in many cases, will not allow alternatives like E85 and bio-diesel to be sold at their outlets.

Is it our own government which refuses to take a tough stance on price gouging and price fixing and which has continued to grant tax incentives to the oil companies?

Is it oil speculators who continue to bid up the price of crude oil? (speculators bid on the prices of all commodities - oil, gold, wheat, corn, iron, copper, etc.

Is it the Chinses or Indians who just want to grow their economies and want to have enough fuel to do it with (they have speculators too).

Is it "we the people" who demand fuel but don"t want drilling in ANBAR or off shore and who don't want a refinery in their back yard. Is it "we the people" who want to drive big SUVs and pickups and who get impatient if they can't drive 70 or 80 mph all the time, who always have their foot on the passing gear, who don't have the foggiest idea what their mpg is and no idea how to improve it?

Who is it? Who do we blame?

Is anyone out there interested, really interested in trying to improve their mpg and conserve fuel?

The days of cheap fuel ended in 1973. It will only get worse from here on.

What are you going to do about it?

It is a combination of people, it is the people who bought the carberator that gets 60 to 70 mpg, it is blocking oil drilling and building refiners in the USA from back during the first oil shortage, it is not developing alternatives to fuel oil long ago when the government first knew this was coming, it is lies about a shortage of corn when the government still pays farmers not to grow crops, it is the auto industry for not building more gas ecconomic autos. And it is ours for sitting back and doing nothing except letting it go on and on. The oil companies make 4 cents on the sale of gas, the government makes 16 cents. so the oil companies may be making money but it is because we use so much. How much is the government making?

Gimini -

It is true that the government taxes the gas. It is also true that they use that money to build and repair the roads we travel on.

What's so funny is people are making a big deal about cars like the Prius that get like 55MPG. 15 years ago my girlfriend had a Honda CRX that got 52MPG and it wasn't a hybrid. So in 15 years they made a car that gets 3MPG better and it costs twice as much as that car did. Now that is progress. The auto manufacturers are partially to blame, the American people are partially to blame, speculators are a huge factor, and of course China.

jstol, if you live in Missouri and travel any major highway, you would know the gas taxes are not going to fix the roads we travel on.

Oil soars today

Key sentence in this article (see below) is one of the biggest reasons - I've been saying all along. The dollar is getting devauled because of our inflationist monetary policy.

"It's been hand in hand with what the dollar's been doing," said James Cordier, president of Tampa, Fla.-based trading firms Liberty Trading Group and OptionSellers.com"

Ya sure you got your tax rebates. Ya you got bear stearns bailed out. Unfortunately your money is now worth far less, and will continue to drop. As the dollar goes down, the price of foreign goods go up.

But nobody sees this because it's very insidious. It's theft via inflation. The fed turns on the money pump to ease the short term pain, and we pay more later on.

Specuators are groups such as airlines and trucking comanies. They're just trying to lock in a good price.

And man, o man, I can't believe the urban legend of the 70 mpg carberuator bought up and stuck in a vault is still alive LOL

I see it! Every frigg'n day I see it.
How is it possible that the dollar is down 28% but our trade deficit continues to grow? Why aren't we exporting our "cheap" products? Oh, BLEEP, I forgot, we're consumers not producers!
But hey, the good news is CPI is only 2.9%...hehehe.

I live in Missouri and I see them working on the roads all the time - not as much as I would like to but I do see them.

Speculators are more like the guys on the floor of the stock exchange or auction - they are bidding against each other just so they can get some - oil that is. The ones who are willing to bid the highest price are the ones who are going to get the good(ie)s.

Could it be that we will be bankrupted by the Chinese over oil just as we bankrupted the Soviet Union over arms?

In many ways the sleeping giant of China was our friend until they began to embrace capitalism. All the more reason for us to become energy self sufficient.

When was it that they dropped the cost of fuel from the CPI?

independant. If anyone wants to correspond directly with me you can do so at jstol3@netzero.com. I see myself as both a conservative and a conservationist. I despise wastefulness but I don't want environmentalists telling me how to live my life. I'm all for a free market system except when it comes to energy. This is a monopoly thast needs to be regulated! I diverge from most conservatives when it comes to abortion and stem cell research as I belive in freedom of choice and scientific progress as I believe that we were given a brain to think with. Knee jerk reactions and one issue politics turn me off. I am both a Vietnam veteran and former Vietnam war protester (we should have been allowed to win). I am an advocate of the war in Iraq (as long as we do what we have to to win) and the war on terror.
