I watched a History Channel show last weekend about how we raise hogs for the marketplace. The hogs are locked up in a building, fed and watered pretty much in place, they eliminate and their waste goes through cracks between the floorboards and is captured for fertilizer. They are not free to roam about or even mate (all offspring are produced by artificial insemination). The boar that donates the sperm is kept busy with a device covered with a piece of carpet which he thinks is a female so he "humps" that device while someone with a latex glove "milks" his sperm from him. The hogs are all temperature controlled by air conditioning so they don't become uncomfortable.

From "cradle to grave" the hogs are fed, watered and made comfortable until they are slaughtered for their meat.

This blog is not about cruelty to animals. Animals have no soul. Animals are here for us to exploit since God gave us dominion over them.

This blog is about people, human beings who have a soul.

The hogs in the program consume - they eat, drink, become artificially inseminated, and are kept comfortable. They have no life. They are consumers which are cared for from birth until the time for their slaughter.

I have decided that I am not a "consumer". I am a customer. I don't want corporations or governments to put me into a cubbyhole and decide for me that I should want or need so much of X, Y, or Z product. I'm going to decide what I want and how much of it. If their product doesn't suit me or I don't like the way it is delivered, financed, produced or presented I'm going to tell them about it and I'm going to refuse to buy it.

I'm no longer a consumer - I'm a customer!

You do get the feeling that the government thinks we are a consumer not a customer. Wonder when they will learn we know what we want and how much of it?

I beg to differ about the "animals have no souls" theory of yours.

Job 12:10 of the Bible states: "In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind."

and we were given dominion to care for and rule.. not to exploit.

And then there are those who believe humans have no soul.

And then there are even humans who murder other humans because they believe there is no afterlife and no divine punishment and therefore, no soul.

Either way bacon tastes good. And its cheap at the Walmart, Costco, and Sam's Club. Hamburger, pork, and chicken, close second.

I knew when I wrote this that some would jump on the animals and miss the point of the blog!

Whether we like to think of it in that way or not we do exploit animals by slaughtering them and eating them. We care for them because we want them to be plump and delicious (I am excluding pets here).

If you believe that an animal has a soul then that is what you believe - I don't believe it.

I do look down on anyone who abuses, tortures, or kills an animal without the intention of eating it.

All of the animals we eat, would not be around if we didn't farm them. Think about how long ago nature would have brought about the extinction of chickens, cows, pigs, goats, sheep and what ever else I forgot. The ones we don't control are in trouble. Seafood is the one I'm referring to here, living on the coast we are always hearing about bans on one type or other while stocks run close to dangerously low levels. I do like the analogy of the post I just wonder how possible it would be to make such a dramatic statement. I would have a great deal of trouble, since I have such a cynical view of the capitalistic free market based on greed with no moral compass.

I think plants can hear and have souls as well.

People talk to them, and they're said to do better

Well, if people are going to jump on the wrong point, write it so they don't.

Lineman, hopefully you're eating the low mercury/pesticide, fertilizer, fish.

The other stuff is supposed to be linked to autism.

mpvan, I don't eat seafood, it tastes fishy, and I know what's in the water.

About fish: I used to be married to a very lazy man. He was so lazy that he didn't attend his classes (I DID and took notes for him) and HE received the degree in Fisheries biology and fresh water aquaculture. Point being.. I'm the one with the education.

Anywho.... I will never let a piece of fish cross my lips. I was born in Oregon and raised in the Pacific NW where I ate Salmon steaks daily. I remember having pan fried trout for breakfast. when I was 6, I would have given my bike for a PBJ, but my family ate what my dad could provide. So you would think that I would be a fish eater.

Anyway, I agree with Linecrosser... I know what's in the water. I also know what and who eats who in the food chain.

For those of you who are just LOVIN' the TILAPIA and Catfish in this region, even if they are hatchery raised... consider what the fish eat and how they are processed before they hit your plate.

(BTW: You would be hard pressed to find TILAPIA on any menu west of the Rockies.)

Yes, animals have a soul. Everything that breathes or creeps, swims, flys, or just sits has a soul.

And Maybe the orthodox jews are on to something about not eating pork.

This is true, but you also have to consider what cows, chickens, pigs, etc eat and how they are processed before they hit your plate. consider the growth hormones pumped into them. Think of that the next time you eat a bacon-cheeseburger.

We all are so off post, I'll try to combine my next comment, no wait, it's about pickles not animals, anyway during high school I'd spend my summers working at a pickle processing plant, as with most, once you see how the processing is done you won't be a customer anymore. Took over fifteen years for me to eat a commercial pickle and I still won't eat relish. So I'm no longer a consumer or customer of relish. I tried to get back on subject.

I believe that animals were put here to be ruled by man, that certain animals are meant to be food for man. However, I was also taught by my father, a farmer, that we are to have respect and care for those animals, even if they do end up on our plate. All these damn treehuggers and vegetarians are just stupid. I don't know if plants have feelings. Animals do. If you hurt them, they will make noise. If they are hungry, they try to let you know. You have to be attentive to their needs. I don't know if animals have souls. I know I can't imagine being in Heaven without my dog. I look in her eyes and if thats not a soul of some kind, I don't know what it is because it sure touches my soul. As far as the animals for food, I'm glad they are around. I am a proud member of PETA.... People Eating Tasty Animals!

independant. If anyone wants to correspond directly with me you can do so at jstol3@netzero.com. I see myself as both a conservative and a conservationist. I despise wastefulness but I don't want environmentalists telling me how to live my life. I'm all for a free market system except when it comes to energy. This is a monopoly thast needs to be regulated! I diverge from most conservatives when it comes to abortion and stem cell research as I belive in freedom of choice and scientific progress as I believe that we were given a brain to think with. Knee jerk reactions and one issue politics turn me off. I am both a Vietnam veteran and former Vietnam war protester (we should have been allowed to win). I am an advocate of the war in Iraq (as long as we do what we have to to win) and the war on terror.
