My parents were married on this day in 1945. WWII had just ended and they were free to get on with their lives. What a time! I wish I could have been there to see it! Freedom, life and liberty after the chaos of the war against Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and the insanity of Japan! I really wish I had been there to see it. I didn't come along until 9 months later though.

After WW II we had the Korean War, Vietnam, other miscellaneous conflicts, Gulf War I, Afghanistan, & Iraq. I went to Vietnam. I spent a year on a hilltop there. I got shot at some and I shot back some. We didn't win and they really didn't win either. Both sides just lost a lot of good people.

Somehow I just don't feel any more free for all of our trouble. We fight and we fight against foreign enemies. We do what our government tells us to do but we keep losing our freedoms here at home. We can't say what we feel because it's not politically correct. We can't seem to get our government to understand that we fought for America and Americans. They keep trying to tell us that we also fought for people who broke into our country. They tell us that we fought for the rights of terrorists in Guantanamo Bay who want to hurt our country and for oil companies and speculators who just want to fleece us as if we are sheep. They tell us that we fought so some people can be free to do nothing and collect our money for doing nothing.

Somehow I don't feel very free on this Independence Day. I feel more like I've been taken advantage of by a government that doesn't care very much about the sacrifices of its citizen soldiers - a government which has its own agenda which is separate from what we thought we were fighting for.

I can't feel very much happiness on this Independence Day.

jstol3, I understand what your feeling. Sometimes it seems like our gov't thinks everyone else matters more than the citizens of their own country, but I'd still rather be here than anywhere else. I can't agree with your statement about not being able to say what we feel. In some other countries you might be imprisoned, or worse, for the above remarks. Politically correct or otherwise, you're still free to say it. Aside from all of this, and most importantly, I'd like to say "Thank you" for your service to our country and your fellow Americans. There are ALOT of people who appreciate what you, and all service men and women, have done for our country. While far from perfect, it's still the greatest country on the planet and I'm very happy to be an American citizen. I hope you have a great 4th of July, jstol3.

Our parents did live through a neat period of time .. didn't they? My mother was a "war bride" .. She's well into her 80's now... and I've heard her say several times recently, "this isn't the country I came to"... And, I think she's right.

I'm afraid for our future or my future grandchildren's future. At times, It seems things are spinning out of control and I feel helpless to change it since I only have control over my own life... And, I've really felt the pinch of higher fuel/food costs recently and it scares me... It makes me feel like all the hard work I've put in means nothing.

However; (and I know you feel this way too) I'd rather live here then Iraq! However; there a some other countries I wouldn't mind living in.. (no 3rd world ones)

Anyway...Thanks for your service - It takes a brave and special person to be in the military. And, I appreciate all of the men and women who choose to serve our country. Even if it doesn't seem like you did much on your hill top... collectively you ALL keep us safe and free!

independant. If anyone wants to correspond directly with me you can do so at jstol3@netzero.com. I see myself as both a conservative and a conservationist. I despise wastefulness but I don't want environmentalists telling me how to live my life. I'm all for a free market system except when it comes to energy. This is a monopoly thast needs to be regulated! I diverge from most conservatives when it comes to abortion and stem cell research as I belive in freedom of choice and scientific progress as I believe that we were given a brain to think with. Knee jerk reactions and one issue politics turn me off. I am both a Vietnam veteran and former Vietnam war protester (we should have been allowed to win). I am an advocate of the war in Iraq (as long as we do what we have to to win) and the war on terror.
