I'm not a sucker pig connected to a feeding tube and I'm not going to "suck up" just any junk the companies out there want to dump into the universal feeding tube that we are all supposed to "consume" from. If I'm happy with the product I will buy it - if not I won't.

I suggest that all Americans scrap the word "consumer" and start using the word "customer" again. Consumers are a mindless bunch of zombies (in the eyes of corporate America). Consumers suck up any old slop the companies feed them. Customers think about it, they make choices, they ask questions, they are in charge!

Be a customer, be in charge, make them give you what you want  don't settle for what they offer! If it is not good enough tell them that it's not and tell them that when they live up to your execations you will buy!

Amen to that, I fully agree. Standards in products, government come back.

Well, I agree with jstol, but why do we need the Gov't. As jstol says, if it's not up to "your" standards don't buy it. Supply and Demand resolves this issue, not the Gov't.
Gov't is needed when there is a Monopoly, which they have to sanction in the first place; like utilities.

vision, what standards has the Gov't provided that have please you? Food Stamps? Medicare? Social Security? Welfare? USDA?

My husband and I decided a couple of months ago to quit being consumers. We have always been very frugal unless we had something we really wanted. We do not buy anything new anymore that we can buy used. We go to thrift stores for his jeans and pocket t-shirts. We no longer use paper towels. (Toilet paper is not something we can do without!) No aluminum foil...no plastic wrap or zip lock bags. We cannot give up buying gas, but we only drive our 93 Escort that has no air conditioning and gets about 40 miles per gallon. We've parked his FlatBed Ford F-150 and my Mustang. We don't buy anything that is not in a recyclable container and have cancelled all our subscriptions to magazines and Newspapers. We can find all the info on the internet that we need. Just peed? Don't flush...
We have become a bunch of users....we need to quit!

DogJ, even when I have been in a lay off I made too much to benefit from any of the above, another words I wasn't elgible, they told me I had too much in assets too. USDA, clearing some of the underage workers out might help get some of the poo out. Besides I guess I am not the "status" that would qualify me for all of the above.

DogJ, when I was finishing college and my daughter was still very young we went through some hard times, the most we ever got from the state was 10.00 a week in food stamps for a period of 2 months, but we were thankful for that, and that is the only time I have received anything like that. Now they can get all kinds of stuff, why work.

independant. If anyone wants to correspond directly with me you can do so at jstol3@netzero.com. I see myself as both a conservative and a conservationist. I despise wastefulness but I don't want environmentalists telling me how to live my life. I'm all for a free market system except when it comes to energy. This is a monopoly thast needs to be regulated! I diverge from most conservatives when it comes to abortion and stem cell research as I belive in freedom of choice and scientific progress as I believe that we were given a brain to think with. Knee jerk reactions and one issue politics turn me off. I am both a Vietnam veteran and former Vietnam war protester (we should have been allowed to win). I am an advocate of the war in Iraq (as long as we do what we have to to win) and the war on terror.
