For those of you who drive on 71 Hwy on your way to work in the morning and on your way home at night: Every one of you knows that there are traffic lights on that highway. If you don't then you haven't traveled that road before. For those of you who do know about the traffic lights - why are you in such a hurry? I drive that highway every weekday and I watch the rest of you speed, tailgate other drivers, change lanes so abruptly that your cars almost bend in half. You cut into breaks in the traffic that are barely large enough for a motorcycle to squeeze into and then you have to stop because you are now at the tailend of the backup that is caused by other drivers who think that the only way to get to work is to act like driving is a competition instead of a means to get to work.

What are you in such a hurry for? You know the lights are there. Are you in a hurry to stop so you can sit in line burning up the gas you bought with your hard earned money? I just don't get it. If all of you would not only slow down but also keep several car lengths of space between you and the car in front of you you might just keep those long backups at the lights from forming.

Ditto for those heading east on I70 in the evening. You know that those lanes narrow down right before Manchester so why do you race each other until right before the construction area and then have to stop until someone lets you into the other lane, or cause an accident, or literally force your way into the other lane by cutting in front of another car? You should be merging long before the construction area so the traffic flow will be smoother.

I think that at least half the drivers in this area should lose their driving license until they can prove that they have overcome their ignorance of how to drive sensibly!

I totally agree with ya, jstol3. The thing is, this kind of driving is metro wide. Everyone seems hellbent to get to work before anyone else. In the afternoon, they become hellbent to get home.

I've never understood it. I see it everyday on I-470, both east and west bound. And, when they either cause an accident or become involved in one, they act shocked.

Another goofy thing that happens, they see a cop, either on the side of the roadway or on an overpass, they practically slam on the brakes to slow down, then speed back up after they pass the cop. Never thinking that he has a radio, a lazer/radar, and there might be another cop just up the road. Bingo!!!! Ticket time.

As for the forced merge. I see it everyday on I-35 Northbound before the Front Street exit. If these people really have the perfect job, that they have to hurry to get to it, I'd love to know where it is.

That's why I retired almost 7 years ago! It was getting too crazy out there. Sounds like nothing has changed. The mentality that "I have to be first" is just crazy. Do they not realize they are manhandling a ton of machinery that can kill and mame??

jstol,
What time do you travel North and South 71? :-)

I too travel it everyday. Love those people that get in the exit lane, do 75mph, and pass a whole 5 cars!!! Wu hu, I'm in front of you.

As a trained NASCAR driver, (not really) I can stay on the bumper of the car in front of me to insure no two-year old is going to pull the "squeeze" on me.

I've asked the Police to monitor N & S 71 at 75th street for those that jump into the exit lane, speed up and then jump back.
They won't do it because it is too dangerous for the officer(s). Hum, I might have to agree:-(

If you want to see some ignorant drivers, try driving down 350 hwy through Raytown every day and it dosen't matter what time of the day or evening it is. They are in such a hurry that you have at least 4 red light runners. How and why there hasen't been a fatal accident there is beyond me. Maybe just maybe GOD is sitting at some of these intersections. Hey I just got back from Dallas/ Ft. Worth area and they drive better than these missouri drivers any day. Just remember people when you hit and kill someone, guess what????? your life is over also. HELLO...THINK ABOUT IT IF YOUR BRAIN ISN'T CLOGGED.

DogJ -
I'm usually on the NB between 6:30 - 7:00 AM and in the SB between 4:30 - 5:00 PM. Sometimes I do the NB on Prospect and the SB on Paseo (both would be great routes if they would just synchronize the traffic signals).

I was actually (really) a drag car driver back in the 70s and 80s. I wish the idiots on the public roads would all take up the sport (racing) on a sanctioned strip/track and get the need for speed out of their systems!

kayb, you are right about some of the idiots on 350 in Raytown. I go through there at least four times a day. Whenever I stop in at QT it is almost impossible to get back on going E in the evening.

By the way, if you are there around 4:00AM you might spot one of the AM Fox celebs! Watch out, the papparazzi now know one of your stops Mark! LOL!! ;)

I one time caught someone driving really recklessly, speeding and whatnot, so I decided to tail him...I pegged my car's electronic speed limiter at 120mph just to catch up to him and stayed with him until we encountered traffic...Of course, being the idiot he was, he tried to squeeze in ahead of me, but I never slowed down to let him in, so he hit his brakes and got behind me then proceeded to honk his horn, ride my bumper and flash his headlights...And I was still doing 120mph...So, since I couldn't go any faster, I decided to hit the brakes and slow down...Of course, seeing how close he was and how angry he was, I decided to send him a serious message and I locked up my brakes at 120mph...Of course, my car held the road, but he panicked and swerved to avoid and ran into the ditch on the side of the highway...I then pulled over, got out with a Desert Eagle in my hand in case he got hostile, then proceeded to chew his butt out for driving the way he did...After about 5 minutes of giving him a verbal tongue-lashing, I left him in the ditch to think about what he did...Barely more than 2 minutes after I left, he zipped past me and tried to run me off the road the same way I ran him off the road, but thanks to the fact I saw him coming and the fact I have better brakes than he did, I put distance between me and him before he could slam on his brakes...

That only pissed him off even more, so when he motioned for me to pull over, I did, and he got out and looked like a bomb was about to go off, so I got out, pointed my desert eagle and a fake badge towards him and ordered him to get back in his car and leave...Of course, he tried to argue with me so I fired a warning shot over his head and made the demand again, and he left and drove like a grandma from that point on.

I've been wondering when you would show up on this blog. You are one of the ignorant drivers I was writing about! I don't believe that I have ever observed your driving before but I have read your outrageous comments on my blogs.

If it had been me you would have left with your "desert eagle and your fake badge" securely locked into your anal cavity.

independant. If anyone wants to correspond directly with me you can do so at jstol3@netzero.com. I see myself as both a conservative and a conservationist. I despise wastefulness but I don't want environmentalists telling me how to live my life. I'm all for a free market system except when it comes to energy. This is a monopoly thast needs to be regulated! I diverge from most conservatives when it comes to abortion and stem cell research as I belive in freedom of choice and scientific progress as I believe that we were given a brain to think with. Knee jerk reactions and one issue politics turn me off. I am both a Vietnam veteran and former Vietnam war protester (we should have been allowed to win). I am an advocate of the war in Iraq (as long as we do what we have to to win) and the war on terror.
