In order, Sheryn...

Own one, hate it; own one, don't drive it much anymore; don't own one; don't own one (company issued); like it but don't HAVE to have it; haven't eaten one in years; prefer it to Wal-Mart; don't own one; BINGO - necessity; have watched it once (at a friend's), hate everything about it; use debit card all the time but, hey, there's always cash; don't own one, never played with one.

Given my place of residence (I can receive three local channels with an antenna), I consider satellite TV a "necessity". Hey, it keeps the wife occupied allowing me to blog.

Starbucks? I enjoy it once or twice a week. Coffee at home, however, is BEYOND necessity.

The rest you can keep.

My list in ascending order of necessity:

American Idol, Playstation, Big Mac, GPS, plasma TV, laptop, cell phone, SUV, Target, Starbuck's, debit card, cable (satellite) TV

To some, a meal at Mickey D's is a luxury. It's all a matter of degree. I do think cell foans are important as to personal safety. I have sub basic cable; only local channels as there is almost no reception here, even with back to back amplifiers.

Leasheryn, everything on the list is really a luxury. None are on the basic needs list. Why?

I'd say they are not necessities either. Except the Debit card.

If I were to pull out my checkbook for groceries these days, I'd be mauled by the angry shoppers behind me for taking that extra 30 seconds to complete my check and the extra seconds the cashier uses to approve it. We've done it to ourselves.

Everyone got it right! Not one thing on the list is a necessity. We can do without everyone of them and live very happy lives. As a matter of fact, we would probably all be a lot happier if not driven by any of these luxuries.

It's sad that there are people out there who think they could not survive without a Starbuck's coffee or American Idol or a playstation.

Necessities are clean air, good healthy food, clean clothing and a good house to go home to.

Amen, I like your necessities list but I would like to add one if I may, an intangible item, love and belonging. I may live alone but I am never lonely and certainly these past two months it has been proven to me that I am loved and belong to a strong circle of people that care as much for me as I do for them. I'll take that over anything on the list.

You are so right, Michelle! People have to love and care for each other and everyone needs to feel as though they are needed and wanted. I think that has to overshadow everything else as a necessity in life.

I am glad to hear you are feeling better. Please take care of yourself; there's something missing around here when you are gone.

ALL luxuries, people are becoming too dependent on technology. I would ride a horse everywhere if I hade room for one and they still had hiching posts. I have no problem boiling coffee over open fires. I grew up poor in rural FLA. as an example who did you see displaced during Katrina? city dwellers. Those "crazy" cajuns out in the bayous were nowhere to be found. Why? they understand the rythems of nature. Their houses float. They can procure their own food and purify the water. They have the skills to cohabitate with nature. These are the skills we have lost by not passing them down through generations. You having intrest in History. You have seen this coming for years. Have a great day. SHIRT abc

Thanks shirt! It's sad when people become so dependent on luxuries that they cannot function during a natural disaster or even cope when the lights go out. Doing without or getting back to nature is good therapy and builds strong character. It's unfortunate that most of the people who were displaced by Katrina were too busy looking for government hand outs to try to do something for themselves. People have always survived disaster by using their own abilities to provide for themselves until they became dependent on government and technology.

I am in Sarasota and enjoy reading avidly, mostly about historical subjects and biographies. Also have travelled in England and Wales, visiting family and historical sights. I like a good conversation on nearly all subjects and, although I have opinions, am willing to listen to all sides of a topic. I believe in listening and learning so your opinions are always necessary to me.
