Born on April 23, 1928, Shirley Temple turns 80 today.  Known as America's Little Princess, Shirley Temple first appeared on film at the age of 3.  Shirley starred in films such as Curly Top, Stand Up and Cheer, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm and Heidi.

She is remembered for singing On the Good Ship Lollypop, Animal Crackers in My Soup, He was a Dandy and for the song she never got to sing, Over the Rainbow.  MGM Studios had been desperate to star Shirley in their blockbuster film The Wizard of Oz but being unable to negotiate with Shirley's film studio, 20th Century Fox, finally had to settle on Judy Garland for the role of Dorothy.

Shirley Temple worked with a number of famous co-stars including Bojangles, Buddy Epson, Arthur Treacher and even John Wayne.

During the 60's she became involved in Republican politics and became ambassador to Ghana.

In all, Shirley has been a constant inspiration to girls throughout the years and will live on in our memories as the curly  haired little girl who won our hearts.

Happy Birthday, Shirley, and best regards for many, many more to come.

I miss my Shirley Temple doll.

I idolized her when I was little.

I have a Shirley doll too. I wanted to grow up to be Shirley when I was little!

I am in Sarasota and enjoy reading avidly, mostly about historical subjects and biographies. Also have travelled in England and Wales, visiting family and historical sights. I like a good conversation on nearly all subjects and, although I have opinions, am willing to listen to all sides of a topic. I believe in listening and learning so your opinions are always necessary to me.
