Just a week after American Airlines announced charging for check-in luggage, due to rising fuel costs, today US Airways has announced a $60 raise on ticket fares, plus, they are doing away with serving snacks on flights, also, do to rising fuel costs.  Gosh I wonder how much they'll save, not passing out those little bags of stale pretzels?  Don't know if this includes soft drinks and coffee.  There's sure no way you can pack a lunch and take a thermos of coffee on a flight.  What's next?  Charging for using the toilet and having to furnish your own T.P.?

If no one flies, except for people that have to because of their jobs and the rich and famous, it won't be long before the airline industry will become another thing of the past.

We dont want airlines to be a thing of the past.. they have a payroll to meet too.. What do you expect them to do? fuel is up , food is up, he!! everything is costing a fortune these days. Airlines are going bancrupt left and right.. but they are supposed to leave THEIR prices the same?

The industry will fall back to a level where only the business people will become the main users of the airlines. I think it was in the 70's that roughly only 20% of the American population flew anywhere in a year. The industry will down size and jobs will be lost. I knew a bank employee who used to fly to NY or Chicago over the weekend just to go shopping. Those days are over.

One good side I suppose, maybe some day when I'm out in the field the sky won't be criss-crossed with contrails that spread out and form a smog over-cast above my crops and livestock.

Searchingtoo, Don't get you britches in a wad! I understand the escalating fuel costs are a big thing, especially with airlines. If they raise their air fares, I can understand it. I do think that the charge for checked bags is a bit steep, but if it helps their bottom line, fine. But, in flight snacks, come on, how much do those awful pretzels cost. They cut out peanuts a long time ago because of so many people being allergic. I don't really give a fig, since I don't eat snacks anyhow. The recent hikes and extra charges could very well cause more airlines to declare bankruptcy do you have any idea how many people will lose their jobs. Maybe the airlines should ask their employees to take a pay cut in hopes things will level out. You can bet your bottom dollar that the CEO's of the airlines aren't going to,
that's why the bottom line is so important.

My husband and I are leaving tomorrow, for two weeks. Flying Southwest to Reno, then driving to Calif. This may be our last trip for a while.

lol...Quit packing so much luggage and you won't have that problem. I just take an overnight's change of clothes in a carry-on bag, then when I get to my destination, the first thing I do is raid the nearest clothing store to the hotel for the cheapest clothes I can find. Or, if I feel the need to, I load the car up with camping gear and a full tank of gas, then drive to where I want to go.

Sounds like what we'll be doing from now on. The reason for this trip is we have a granddaughter graduating from high school, in Calif. and we have to check on our condo in Reno. Packing for 2 weeks, for two people is brutal.

lol...Sounds like camping gear and a full tank of gas would be much cheaper then...Stop at the condo in Reno to get a change of clothes and wash the dirty ones, then proceed on to cali and watch your granddaughter...Repeat the cycle on the return trip home.

I wish I had gotten your suggestion before I packed everything. Sounds like a plan. I'll remember it for next time.

Southwest Airlines has it right. The other airlines were so quick to establish hubs, offer flights to every hodunk with a windsock and "go global". They mortgaged their future on lifestyles and costs of the 80's.

Southwest Airlines stayed regional and expanded as it made sense to expand, paying as they went. They know the secret to wealth is making a little bit a lot of times. Therefore, they offer great customer service at a reasonable price (without all the extra charges). They will get the customers the others lose with their attitude of "raise the cost to the consumer so we can make a big profit". Southwest might only make $1.50 per customer, but they will make it a few million more times than anyone else because they take care of their customers.

Too many airlines and other businesses are run by Democrats..."raise prices" or "raise taxes", those are the only solutions they can see. Real business people do more for the customer in hard times, that is how they survive the hard times.

MissNancy, sounds a lot like ticket scalpers...They buy $300 tickets then turn around and sell them for $3,000 just "Because I need to make a profit", yet the legitimate sellers make a much bigger profit selling $300 tickets for $350 to over 10,000 customers.
