I found this interesting, since Daddy Bush was the one that banned off shore oil drilling, in the first place. Why did it take this moron so long to undo the mess his dad caused. Now, it will take at least 4 years to catch up, in the meantime we'll all go broke between paying taxes and buying gasoline.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush asked Congress Wednesday to permit drilling for oil in deep water off America's coasts to combat rising oil and gas prices.
If President Bush can persuade Congress, more oil rigs like this one off Canada could appear off U.S. shores.

"There is no excuse for delay," the president said in a Rose Garden statement.

Bush also renewed his demand that Congress allow drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, or ANWR, clear the way for more refineries and encourage efforts to recover oil from shale in areas such as the Green River Basin of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming.

Bush said that the basin potentially contains more than three times as much recoverable oil as Saudi Arabia's proven reserves, and that the high price of oil makes it profitable to extract it.

I don't think daddy Bush was the pres in 1981 when offshore drilling was outlawed.

Jimmy Carter did suggest extracting oil from shale during his term - nothing ever came of it - ther shale and the oil are still there.

Actually it was Jimmy Carter who was president from 1977-1981. So Bush is cleaning up after Carter.

George H.W. Bush was president 1989-1993. He signed an executive order to ban off shore drilling in 1990.
jstol3 you might want to bone up on your history.

Actually it was 1981 when congress banned off shore drilling. Then Bush autherized an additional level of protection which defered new leasing. so jstol is correct and to a lesser extent so are you.

Bush did this till 2002 then Clinton extended it in 1998 until 2012. So Bush' protection expired and Clintons' took over.

Come on people, let's not make everything Republican vs Democrat.
Oil was between $15 and $20 a barrel back then. The environmentalist, (normally associated with Democrats) lobbied hard to prevent drilling offshore. The US's depenency was far less than it is today, and most certainly the cost was FAR LESS.
What's wrong with the politicians changing policy as circumastnaces change? I view opening up offshore or Alaskan drilling as a good change, don't you? If any complaining is warranted, it's why are the Democrats still so opposed? Whether it takes 3, 5 or 10 years to bring the new drilling product to the consumer, why wouldn't the US want to start ASAP?
If we, the people really want to have any control over our energy needs and cost, we have to start somewhere, sometime. Now seems like a good time.
Also, I have an idea for either political party. Mandate that any new single-family residential constrution be equipped with solar or wind power ability, and phase in an energy tax on any vehicle that does not meet a mpg threshhold; say 30mpg within 5 years.
Change is needed; sooner rather tham later.

It isn't about Dems and Rep. really it is about the dates and me being naughty. I realize that 25 yrs ago it wasn't like today, I also know that 5 years ago it wasn't like today, but today it is and we need to do something about it and we need to do it now. But it is about blocking the drilling and even McCain does not want it in some areas as versus Obama who doesn't want it any place.

You are right, it isn't about Dems or Rep., it just unfortunate the government doesn't know that. Every administration from Carter to Bush #2 had the chance to change this-they didn't now they blame each other.

Actually, it's time to quite blaming anyone. Both the Rep. and Dem. are morons. However, when the price of oil started going up almost daily, 2 to 3 years ago, something should have been done then. Why must the government always wait until the 'horse is stole', to lock the barn door.? Now that the cost of everything is getting completely out of control, it's all of a sudden recognized and now the push is on. Come on, isn't there anyone in D.C. that has any foresight?
