In the wake of the most recent campus shooting, ASU begins looking into disclosure of mental illness.
I know many will argue their various points of view, so here's mine:
While I was a student at ASU, I was diagnosed with a mental illness. I disclosed it to disability services and that was the end of it. Back then, it was no big deal to me and I had not seen or experienced just how ugly the mental health system was here in Maricopa County.
A few years later I was sexually assaulted in a behavioral health facility here in Maricopa County. I met another woman who was hospitalized in a different "franchise location" and she experienced the exact same thing. You could say it is an MO with multiple perps.
Because of the peer networking and peer support services, stories of the horrors MZ and I went through turned out to be far more commonplace than one could begin to imagine.
Further, in the early days of Value Options, they were implementing a "medication management model" for treatment. Here's your zombie pills, now go away. I was even forced to be a human guinea pig for Neurontin and at that time, it was only approved by the FDA for seizures.
I even had a doctor inform me that I was under court order and that if I didn't take what he prescribed, he would put me in the hospital. I was neither under court order and the pot was calling the kettle black that day. I look up all doctors that treat me and this particular man had been in treatment for both substance abuse and sexual contact with patients. He worked at and adolescent treatment facility at the time of his temporary license suspension. He treated me while working under the provision that he is not allowed to treat minors. If he was a teacher, his mugshot would be on TV and he would be in prison now.
It may just be coincidence, but I have seen the worst of the worst and can name names and cite what circumstances I happened to see some of the worst of the worst under and why they lost their licenses (either temporarily or permanently).
The horror story behind the doctor and the sexual assault would give you chills. His "practice" address was at a mailbox outlet franchise that was not affilitated with the USPS. Currently, his address is the physical address of a USPS location and not a PO Box there. Oh, and doctors can order drugs out of catalogs.
If you think that www.azmd.gov is keeping you safe, think again. I was sorely disappointed when they were BOMEX.
Finally, Alzheimers is a mental illness and listed in the current DSM. It was also first described back in about 1912. JQP didn't hear of any signs, symptoms or research until the early 1980s. Feeling any safer now??? What about the "elderly abuse" for which you can get legal representation if a loved one is hurt in a nursing home?
I have yet to see adequate protection for anyone with a diagnosis from the DSM and not just the elderly in nursing homes.
Now, about this ASU disclosure...
I have been very open and public about my experiences within the mental health system, but it is because I have seen the worst of the worst. I try to advocate so that there is better treatment.
ASU is perpetuating a great disservice and will undo all of the good that many peer support groups have done to get help for those that need it.
http://www.healthyplace.com/Communities/Depression/
mhrecovery/about_me.asp has the story of a woman with schizophrenia that started the whole recovery movement.
Research on the forward progress to eliminate stereotypes and to provide real recovery care and treatment will show that it does work.
ASU is on the brink of firing their own invisible bullet into the lives of at least 70,000 Magellan consumers in Maricopa County and I can't even begin to guess the number of people that receive services in the private sector.

Traffic
I was on my way home yesterday morning when I got rear-ended just off of I-17.
Details, details...
Anyhow, the DPS officer that came to assist told us that it isn't a matter of if, but rather, a matter of when one finds themselves in an accident on valley roads. He indicated that he had been in four accidents while on the job.
I think he is right. The way some people drive while texting, shaving, applying lipstick and eating, it is a miracle that there aren't more accidents around here. Then there are the vehicles that shouldn't even be on the road...
What adds insult to injury is the fact that we are just working on wrapping up a claim because my son was in an accident here in the valley just three months ago. With all of the holidays and Christmas stuff going on, we opted to wait until after January first to get the car to the body shop.
Now we need to do the same old song and dance again with the estimate, the rental car, the whole shebang...
My son was not at fault with that one either. It is a real inconvenience!
Can someone explain to me why it is that students aren't mandated to take driver's ed, but they need a gazillion credits in other areas that half of them don't even use.
Did I mention that my neck and back hurts and I am missing work because of this?
"Scuse me while I go and take my pain pills.

Does this strike affect anyone any more or less than say:
Teacher's strike
Baseball Strike
Football strike
Hockey strike
UAW strike
Pilot's strike
F117A strike
???
In Arizona we are pretty much unable to strike due to the "right to work" law and it is rare to see a picket line in AZ.
I just read today that 24 is now affected by the strike.
Any shows you could care less about with the strike?
Any shows you are hoping doesn't get affected?
I hope they get new writers for Prison Break. This season is a snoozefest to some extent.

It is in breaking news on FOX right now that a child was left in a car all day at the Hooters off of I-17 & Bell road.
They say the child died.
It has been several years since my daughter went to daycare, but there were so many mornings where I would be on autopilot from exhaustion that I would be halfway to work and double check that I remembered to take her to daycare.
I can see how it can accidentally happen and it is so tragic.

I am just curious as to whether anyone has ever taken any courses online?
I am currently taking a course called "Learning and the Brain" through Rio Salado CC and took a few other classes through them in the past.
I already have both a BAE and a master's where I physically went to school. Now people can get degrees online and I was just wondering if anyone had gotten an assoicate, bachelor or master's degree completely online.
It would be hard to compare experiences if one did all of their college online, but since I have done most of mine in person and now have the luxury of further education courtesy of Al Gore (he invented the Internet, you know...) I find it more convenient in some ways, but the need for discipline and fitting it in can be creative.
If I could do it all over again, I wouldn't mind the ability to do lower divisin classes online, but wouldn't want to have done it all that way. It would have been great to have been able to just get online and read a lesson at my convenience.
The self-determination to get the coursework done is something I don't think I would have handled as successfully back then. Now it is easier and there is more incentive to get it done.
What do you think? Would you consider trying to earn a degree online? Have you taken any classes through distance learning?
Just curious.

I have never had much of a choice in my life. If I had a choice, I would go up with the Thunderbirds.
Naval Air Space Administration? Well, that depends?
If we can round up "Tooms" and "Bloomers"
Then I can take a ride of my life.
I didn't have a choice as to which parent would stay alive the longest but doctors are pisspoor at predictions. (2-3 years, lifetime?) Fortunes, forecasts, lucky charms will not be dispensed without a signature.
I have to send a mighty Chief fax so that it can be pretty "chief" to "chief"
GHWB and my dad are in a living contest. (Thats' what old guys do!)
Dad should have died of cancer when I was a baby and so was my baby sister.
I would like to make a wish to allow him to into a hyperbaric chamber so that his foot can heal and so that the effects of stroke can be reversed.
My dad deserves a dance whenever my husband and I renew our vows.
We will be slow dancing tonight.
FWIW, there is a Ben BLEEP museum in Texas. How's that for trivial pursuit?
I really want to make a prank phone call out to Luke to see when they will hve the Thunderbirds there, but all y'all have let us know how much women can do.
Gotta sew some bloomers for my daughter that my dad got to hold in my little blue dress. That image is SEARED in my mind.
Thanks,
MsInfo
PS Where is the "make a wish" for parents that are dying and would like to see something with their young children?
PPS Thanks for not being able to show the clip of the woman pilot that is a Thunderbird. She has been called up! (Swing, batter, batter, batter!)

Dear Sheriff Joe,
There is no health forum here, so I am writing an open letter on this blog because I doubt you read e-mail.
I wanted to inquire about your testicular cancer awareness program. Are you reminding your inmates to get enough licopene in their diets (about ten servings of tomato per week) to help prevent prostate cancer? Are you providing them with enough licopene?
The alternative to licopene is (ahem) three entertaining showers a week, complete with slippery soap, rosie and her sisters and an imagination. I am sure that "tent city" provides for both the hygenic and prostate health of the men that get a daily reminder to salute their shorts.
Or is it all one mass psychological abuse programme you have there? Did you learn this little trick from Dr. Cameron Scott or (the no longer legally allowed to practice) Dr. George D. Scott of Canada?
That pink is a spectacular colour choice.
Does it really help improve the behaviour of men that are a product of the system?
May I suggest a yellow pill?
Sincerely,
Curious George

This is two days in a row that I have caught bits and pieces of previews of The Kingdom (a movie to be released in September) and would like to find out more.
It feels kind of strange having heard the premise. In an effort to not misquote, I will be brief and give my perspective.
Apparently, a bomb goes off in a family compound (American ?) and the US and Saudi Arabia team up to find the perp(s).
My grandparents lived in an American family compound (as well as, my aunt) back in the 50s or 60s. Grandpa did groundskeeping/gardening/maintenance and grandma and my aunt just pretty much stayed home and my aunt went to an American elementary school.
Seeing pictures of where grandpa lived, hearing stories, learning Arabic as a child and all of the memories that go along with grandpa's life in Saudi Arabia have been in turmoil since January of 1991 and again after 9/11.
The premise of the movie has really struck a nerve and a part of me wants to see the movie, but another part of me wants it to not even be released.
Hope that makes sense...
Kate

For some reason I feel very lethargic. The lack of energy is pretty frustrating and I don't know what to make of it.
Anyone else affected this way by the heat?
Does anyone think we will see much rain from Dean?

I put my dog, Pooka, as my avitar. We adopted her from the humane society this past February. She is my therapy pet and needs just as much therapy as I do. She is very sweet and loving but afraid of her own shadow. I know there are others like me that need assistance to help pay for the care of their therapy pet. I feel fortunate for my particular situation, but many others that face the turnover from VO to Magellan are not so fortunate.
