This is two days in a row that I have caught bits and pieces of previews of The Kingdom (a movie to be released in September) and would like to find out more.

It feels kind of strange having heard the premise. In an effort to not misquote, I will be brief and give my perspective.

Apparently, a bomb goes off in a family compound (American ?) and the US and Saudi Arabia team up to find the perp(s).

My grandparents lived in an American family compound (as well as, my aunt) back in the 50s or 60s. Grandpa did groundskeeping/gardening/maintenance and grandma and my aunt just pretty much stayed home and my aunt went to an American elementary school.

Seeing pictures of where grandpa lived, hearing stories, learning Arabic as a child and all of the memories that go along with grandpa's life in Saudi Arabia have been in turmoil since January of 1991 and again after 9/11.

The premise of the movie has really struck a nerve and a part of me wants to see the movie, but another part of me wants it to not even be released.

Hope that makes sense...

Kate

I spent over 8 yrs in Riyadh. Was there when the OP-SANG building was bombed which was just down the street from where I lived. The city is a mixture of ultra rich and dirt poor people. You have those trying to live in the 21st century and the clerics who believes they're in the 14th century.

I would be interested in seeing the film but the ideal of some Saudi having the initiative to do their job effciency would be a first.

Scott,

I don't remember where my grandparents and aunt lived and those memories feel like a lifetime ago, but watching the ads for the movie seemed to awaken long buried memories.

I guess there is a part of me that has images in my mind that were based upon grandpa's stories and descriptions and I am not sure I want my mind movies altered by Hollywood's version this week.

A lot of the movie was shot on the campus of ASU and the end of route 202 before it was completed.

Far out!

It should be interesting to see from multiple perspectives if I choose to go in with an open mind.
