Crude oil is currently at $116.59 per barrel, more than double the price of $50 per barrel in May 2005.  Gas prices have risen from $2.43 in 2005 to $3.83 now, an average of $0.47 per year.  Things are expected to get worse, but even at this rate, gas will cost  $4.00 per gallon by next year, and over five dollars per gallon by 2011.  And that's only if things stay the same.

Are we ready for these prices?

Can America's economy survive when gas is over five or ten dollars per gallon?

Will Americans be able to afford housing and feed their families in the near future?

What do you think?

I think we all need to start looking for alternatives! The economy isn't going to hold up with these gas prices increasing the price of everything else, and wages staying the same. Did you see the movie "Who Killed The Electric Car"? It played on Starz last month, it just goes to show that the technology is there, and had been there for the electric car. I was looking at smart cars the other day online, they start at about $13k and are very popular in Europe.

The less demand we have the more prices will drop, that is certain.

It's time for the tree-huggers and liberals to move aside and allow us to get our OWN oil from the west, gulf and ANWR!!!

We can be oil independent in 10 years!!!

If we can keep the goverment from taking all the investment money for new technology that the energy and oil companies have, then we possibly stand a chance. America's gasoline and fuel oil prices have been artificially low for years, and only now comming into alignment with the world and reality. The majority of Americans will weather this. For those that don't, I believe that the real question is how much of many of their ailments are self inflicted ?

Meb452m~ Thanks for the dose of reality.... What Meb452m's saying is correct.. I guess the American dream that so many see, is just that a dream. We spend our money on all kinds of electronics, food, entertainment and take gas for granted. Except now those other things we like to do are having to be dwindled because the fuel costs are over riding our present budgets..

The people that will have the greatest impact on the costs are those not willing to give up some of those extras.. ? ..

IT has already impacted me. I am buying and selling stuff on ebay, and even that market is going dry as buyers aren't bidding like they used to. I also am starting a home based business. I pray it works. It will take some doing, but I've survived for this long, what's a little more?

Of course, gas has been underpriced for years, and we are coming in line, but the rapid rate at which it is happening after being spoiled with cheap gas is going to take a toll, but it will be temporary, but also painful. I look for $5 a gallon gas in the next year or so.

Get a job you bum! LOL

Just kidding. I wish you all the luck.

Like you guys are saying, it's time to tighten the belt for many Americans.

I dunno how long our oil supplies will last, but alternatives are looking better all the time. As you know, I'm a big fan of solar.

How much oil can we get by drilling in the US? How long will it last us?

Who will actually build these alternative energy plants? The oil companies? Seems to me they've been dragging their buttocks on this.

Norty ANWARR, suppossedly has enough oil to end Saudi consumption for thirty yrs. Then you have the Gulf of America right off of Florida. Both are temporary in nature as a means of buying time for the new technology to come on line. Solar is fantastic, the US Navy has proven since the early 60's that, given proper training and supervision, nuclear is a safe and reliable means of producing power. Ag-fuels are being researched and heavily invested in in Florida. It still takes time. It is also a matter of National Security, can't fathom why Washington doesn't see it that way. But then deaf, dumb, blind, thieving drunks are not know for rational decision making !

if our president did not have huge financial interest in oil he might of stood up to the oil companies. Gas is already $4 a gallon in daytona... it makes me very angry that the MEDIA has the power to do what ever they want but they choose to ignore this dire matter. When the real estate market took a tumble for the worst every media resource spoke about it until it could sink any more... If we dont talk about its effect then no one will know how drematic it is... We all complain but yet we go to the pump every day... truckers are driving alot slower than you would all think... it is going to take longer for goods to arrive which means we will be paying alot more for EVERYTHING... If We cant afford to buy any goods because the price is too high companies wont afford to stay in business.
its horable that fuel cost are going increasing and all washington does is pass down a classic gimick. a .5% saving for 2 weeks and then back to normal. I mean its bad enough we pay for our governments health insurance what else do they want us to do... IF WE CANT GET TO WORK WE CANT PAY TAXES!!!!!

All that we need is for a major huricane to hit and our region will hit $5 a gallon in a week.

Thanks signal ! I need groceries, I stop on the way home from work, same for a haircut, Home Ddepot or anything else. I rarely drive out at lunch time. If I do any extra driving, it's when my daughter is wih me and we're doing something together. People are used to treating gas like tap-water, those days are over, and forever ! I try and conserve water and electricity also as that is next !

Pointing fingers will not get us anywhere “Bush did it” is a waste of time and serves only to help in electing another set of idiots (stop wasting my time pretending that Bush the first president in 30 years to even develop an energy plan is to blame)
Electric car??? Sorry but that is not an answer its just another game of “hide the pickle” electric cars have to be charged to run and this country still gets 1/3 of its electricity from burning oil ! Ethanol at $2.60 a gallon is looking a lot better now isn't it kids , and gorilla I do want us to develop biodiesel (it can be made from many forms of waste and is clean) but so far all the “tax incentives” for biodiesel are only available to fuel that is produced from “new raw material” producers of WVO fuel are not getting the same tax exemption as producers that import bio-oil to produce fuel...talk about getting it “wrong” when trying to get it right !

Some of the problem with prices is that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, does not allow for 95% of Canada's oil reserves to be claimed when companies report their worth and supplies. "free" markets are great! What a way to reduce our supplies so money men can make money.
