Brothers and Sisters, we are gathered here today to discuss the most natural and frightening thing in the world, death.  Most of us find it disturbing to consider our own mortality.  What will happen tomorrow?  How long will I live?  What will happen to me after I die and what purpose has my life served?  These are questions that have been studied for all of man's existence and for good reason.

It is natural that we want our lives to continue, that this existence should go on forever, for the alternative is truly frightening, that it will all end and nothing remain of our efforts.  If you are like me, then you believe that death is the end of your life.  You know that nature has a plan, and it doesn't include you, at least not for long.  You believe that there is a vast and perhaps infinite universe that is far beyond understanding, but one thing rings true, and that is that death will take us all whether we accept it or not.

What is the purpose of death?  Death makes room for new life; it allows life to change, to grow, and to continue in new and wonderful ways.  For how can new flowers grow if the old ones never die?  How can life evolve unless the old is replaced by the new?  Modern science has shown us that even the stars have a limited lifetime, that entire galaxies are gobbled up on a daily basis, along with their inhabitants.  The question that haunts us is, What will happen to me after I die?  The scientific view says that, after we take our last breath, after the heart stops pumping blood to the brain, that it, our mind, will disintegrate very rapidly.  Like a magnetic tape under a huge magnet, the memories, all of the years of learning and experience are gone in a matter of mere seconds.

You may be saying, Surely there is a purpose to life.  Surely all of our experience and knowledge were not in vain.  Surely, we must live on, at least in some way or another, and you would be right.  We do live on, but not in ourselves, not as ourselves.  The good news is that there are copies of the tape.  All that you know may be passed along to the next generation, by teaching, by writing, by sharing your existence with the world at large.  Even your very genes can be passed along, but as the saying goes, You can't take it with you.

This life is reality.  This life matters.    Make your life matter.  Make your decisions, about what you do, what you buy, and about what causes you support, matter.  Don't wait until after you die to make a difference.  Don't waste this precious gift of life while you still have it in your possession,  and don't worry about what happens after you die, because it's completely out of your control.  Take comfort in living well and accept life for what it is instead of what you wish it could be.  Accept death as your own personal retirement and prepare for it accordingly by making the most of your life today.

Death is not something to fear my friend, it is just the next leg of the journey.

I take it one day at a time.

With your first breath of life you begin the dying process. That single breath is the turning point in all our lives when we go from living to dying. I have no fear of the end maybe because I have seen it up close and personal so many times. For me death is just conclusion that no one can escape.

I am dying to live and I do take every opportunity to record my life for all those that will follow. I may never be famous or rich beyond my dreams for I am just a simple person, but maybe in that simplicity I can change one life for the better, be it now or in the future. That is the purpose of my life and one I never question.

Great post Norty.

I'll try to make the best of it. Still don't know if I'm dying to live or living to die. Probably a little of both. I don't think I have many years left, but you know what they say about mean people...We never die! LOL

I live life to the fullest because I believe that my life and this world we live in has purpose and meaning rather than just being mere chance. I do not fear death and look forward to the next stage of reality for the same reason that I live life for the fullest now ... I live in light of eternity because of purpose and design. There is meaning in both life and death, let us not miss out on that purpose and meaning.

what if its the same egyptian belief that has shaped the worldly conscious?
Does it really matter the name of the god-realized?
Or is it just the fact that their life of sacrifice was such a profound statement in this reality of disillusion...
If everyone is the same and on the same journey, why do we label and discriminate?
We are here for about a hundred years, what is a hundred years on the grand scale?
Its a minuscule amount compared to much of the universe...
What if time is created by us? and could be transcended by our ever-evolving consciousness...
The mind is capable, when will reality catch up?...

Gorilla - there is a big difference between having a similar concept of after-life and the details about what that might encompass. The foundational concepts of Egyptian polytheism and the afterlife are different from Judeo-christian monotheism. The difference of perspective concerning the afterlife influenced how they lived in this life.

I don't read everything and I don't alwasy read carefully. I am really thick skinned and am not easily offend, but I am always concerned that, when stating my views, that I can come across in an offensive way. I hope that you don't view me as a bully. If you do, I apologize.

Not at all Didaskalos..see not too many people have I guess "our talents" to come across and debate but when things get twisted and distorted is just a tad bit inconsistant...is hard to explain and like I said this is not worth my time any more..is in the past..but please nothing you have ever blogged or posted comes as offensive in fact we have disagreed on the gay/lesbain thingy and we have respected each others opinion and have left at that.....that's commendable...AND I STILL WANT CHUCK...you know haven't seen him in any movies...are you like a big fan???? do you where he has been???

I like Chuck too. I seem like a genuinely nice guy ... seriously kick butt, but a nice guy. The reason for the Chuck Norris avitar is because my son suggested it. I don't know what's up with Chuck ... maybe we need a crisis where he can come in like a superhero or action figure.
