A young man in OP helped apprehend some female car burglars. He detained one while taking their car keys which allowed OP PD to apprehend the other two not too far away. This guy's neighbors should throw him a party, I know I would be grateful.

I know there is a certain amount of risk when the average citizen steps in and confronts criminals, but if everyone acted in a preventive if not a confrontational manner towards criminals, how our world could change.

Self defense classes will help average citizens at least be able to react rather than freeze in a violent situation. If Kelsie had fought, bit, screamed and kicked, she would probably be alive today. But like most of us when thrown into an unfamiliar situation, we don't react very quickly.

From the video the police vewied Kelsey did put up a fight. And from further evidence found she fought long. I think self defense is great. However it doesn't protect you against someone with a gun or doesn't always protect against someone that out weights you by a lot. I think every situation is different. But I agree it woud give you something to work with. Like you said and unfamilar situation, would we be in such shock we couldn't respond. I think the OP guys is Awsome!!! I would have been grateful too. And to Relax, I have read things you have written before...Your right on!!!

Cntrygirl, where is this evidence about her fighting long? Just curious...hadn't heard that they'd released new evidence in the case.

Thanks.

Vole - The police said they could tell the way the car looked she was fighting - Plus when the news shows the film and you watch close you see Hall run across and hit her with his body in the door of her car like raming a football player - Plus men are stronger thien women I don't care what kind of classes she takes in defence if he got the upper hand that is all it wrote.

Hi Vole, Remember all the live new cases they had in the beginning when they were looking for her and then right after they found her that is where I/we saw it. I say I/we several of us at work had running on our PC's that day. Before they found her they said from the video they could tell she was fighting. Then after they found her they said they could tell she put up a fight.

Okay, thanks. I do disagree about the point that since men are stronger, she had no chance. Having had six years of intensive martial arts training, I can say from experience that I will usually have the upper hand against martially untrained men twice my weight. Self defense also teaches you to be constantly aware of your surroundings, not just how to fight.

part of a criminals attire for robbing has got to be a lethal weapon of sorts. So this guy goes out and stops 3 robbers and detains one of them and now ya'll reporting that they're going to be charged with felonies no less. Is lethal force ok to use in the commission of a felony? Should have shot them all, making sure his is the last story. That's preventative crime control.

Self-defense classes are fine and I believe that everyone should take them, but they are good only so long as you stay proficient. Taking a single hour long class isn’t going to work unless you encounter a situation right after the class. As the saying goes. “If you don’t use it, you loose it.” Both men and women should play the WHAT IF game constantly. As you’re going to bed at night play out in your mind what you would do if someone broke into your house at that very moment? Do the same thing while driving, what would I do if someone approached my car to carjack it? Imagine several other dangerous and/or life-threatening scenarios and how you would handle them. Don’t do it just once, think about all the time, always have a plan. It’s okay to let yourself become a little paranoid, you’re less likely to be taken by surprise and will be able to react without having to think about it, because you already have.

I so agree. Not that I fear everywhere I go, but, I have to constantly watch my back in my own yard. Hence, another conversation!!! Anyway, always keep something close at hand, IN HAND IF WALKING, under your car seat, by your front door, down your driveway, something you know will be there. Clean your car, your yard and always check, your safety tools. Guns can be helpful, but, if caught off gaurd, a tire iron under the seat would be real handy!!! JUST THINKING, {i really don't play that way } LOLOLOLOLOLOL

Vole - And I disagree with you I don't care how many clases you take and how strong you think you are - men are more powerful then women.

It is true that most men are stronger than women. I have a sister that can take out both of my brothers :) and they are pretty darn strong. I know there are a couple of ways a woman not matter what her size or her male attackers size that she can take him down. BUT, she has to be in the position to do so. And that doesn't always happen. Never say never :)

For those who don't have a gun or don't have a permit especially women carry a lockblade or pocket knike keep it in your puse or in your cars console or glove box.Just remember that the blade can't be over three inches long, but you don't need a permit for it,but just like a gun you need to learn how to use it.
