The recent management / labor talks at G.M. have raised the issue of quality in American made auto's brought out on milesdavis recent blog. My experience is the quality has risen over the decades in most all vehicles. My first cars I owned were 60's models and it seems they required an overhaul if the mileage was over 100,000. At those miles they tended to smoke, leak and lose power. Now it seems auto's log well over 200,000 and still perform adequate. I know they have become more efficient and the horse power attained with fewer cylinders was unheard of three decades ago.

But, when a problem does arrise with a newer vehicle, the repair and parts costs are quite large.  I haven't driven a new vehicle off a lot since the 80's, as their costs has risen to a point that I choose to buy 2-3 year old trucks which cost half of one with no miles on the odometer. But when I see that alot of the price of a new vehicle is to pay the workers benefits, I just don't feel that much sympathy for people who get their health insurance paid after retirement, as most of us Americans will struggle for that. I understand this will be a hot issue, but lets discuss the meret of this.

I think I’d rather see someone who has worked all their life and retired get healthcare benefits than some scumbag who has never worked a day in his/here, get emergency medical treatment in hospitals across the country. They will never pay the bill, but we will through increased medical cost that helps offset the loss sustained by the hospitals and doctors. Who do you think foots the bill for the drug dealers and gang-bangers who get shot and stabbed in their turf wars, or the users who overdose? Then we have the added cost of incarcerated criminals who get free medical care. At least those who have healthcare through their retirement have, by virtue of their work, contributed something to society.

Yes, they have Jordan. Especially UAW workers because they are paying benefits for others in the union, those that went before them, plus themselves. When you look at everything they pay on, their union benefits, all of the families they adopt, the charities they contribute to, they are one great group of people. Of course, I know this because my husband is in the union. I see their kindness, especially how they pulled together in large groups and donated their time and muscle to the families devastated by tornadoes in 2003. Most of them ask for nothing in return. They help at a moment's notice. Even after they retire, they are still involved with organizations such as the United Way. I'm proud my husband is a union brother.
