After seeing madmugz pic of the turtle, I was compelled to share a story of a turtle I came across while driving down a country road in Franklin County Kansas.  A friend and I were cruising back to her place, and we both in sync said "What in the world is that up ahead?"  I slowed down, and stopped, having my camera in my purse at all times, I put the car in park, and we got out to investigate.  I got some neat pics of this very large turtle.  I do have one question however, if anyone is up on turtle facts, you might be able to help us out.  Upon approaching this creature, we were not real close, maybe a foot away from it, the turtle sprayed something from it's side at us.  Any ideas as to what that was?  We have our guesses....I look forward to responses!

If someone can also give me the way to insert a pic here, I can come back and post the pics I have.  Thank You!  I did change my avatar to one of the pics of the turtle I have.

I'm sure it probably "peed"...I have to admit, I've never seen it "spray", but it would be possible with larger turtles....it's s defense mechanism similar to skunks, frogs, toads, snakes, oppossums, etc...very smelly, and if you were trying to eat it, probably very bad tasting!!!

I like to take drives with my father on the dirt roads around Excelsior Springs....so far this year, we have saved 3 turtles from their demise, one ornate box turtle and two snapping turtles....each of them "unloaded" on me.

We wondered if it was "pee" but of course, didn't want to fathom that, luckily for us, it didn't get on us. This creature was actually fast moving for it's size and the nature of its being. We were intrigued. Thank You for your response!
