So, it's time to change posts up a little, and with the return to school coming upon us, I am looking to fellow bloggers to find out if you have any secrets/advice/hints when it comes to back to school shopping.  We don't typically run out and spend hundreds of dollars on clothing as we typically don't have that kind of money, nor do we find it necessary to "keep up" however, kids grow, clothes wear out, etc...I have one entering middle school (11 year old daughter) and one entering High School (14 y/o son).  Another item we end up never being able to hit the nail on the head with is school supplies.  Enevitably, we buy what's stated on "the list" and there are things not listed we need, and/or items we buy we don't need.  Every school is different however, I find that asking around can be helpful as well.  So, if you are a seasoned shopper/parent/educator, I would love to take your ideas, and see if I can put them to use this year in order to be more prepared.  Thank You all for your help!  And I hope everyone has a successful school year ahead.  It seems to me I am reaching out there and asking a lot, but one more item I am seeking help with is that I volunteered with our middle school PTO and am in charge of friday fun nights.  Basically 4 fridays out of this school year, I will chair a committee to entertain 6-8 graders on a friday night.  One activity we do is a movie room, I would welcome any other activities that can be held inside that are acceptable for that age group.  We hold dances on other friday nights.  Thank You so much for your help again.  I appreciate all positive feedback!  The ability to reach out to fellow bloggers that I appreciate each and every time something comes up.  Being able to communicate with others outside the immediate circle within my community brings in a broad range of ideas.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES: I think the lists are great for ELEMENTARY students... but for middle and high -- I would go with the list on things that are always there in every grade -- glue sticks and notebook paper and pens and pencils that kinda thing. But then we wait for school to start and go out again for the notebooks, etc each teacher prefers them to have.

SCHOOL CLOTHES: I have found that if you go to consignment and thrift stores located in "well-to-do" areas, you can find some really great high end, like new clothes for next to nothing. At back to school time -- I usually look for short sleeve tees and polos in middle dept stores like Kohl's and then I let the kids have $100 out of their own savings account to splurge on something they feel they have to have--their pick. It was HEELEYS last weekend!
FRIDAY FUN NIGHTS: Game Night is an option. You can have different board games -- have someone bring in DDR (Dance Dance Revolution--girls love this) and some video game stations. Maybe even set up a tournament for some games.
Other than that, and what you mentioned -- dance and movies... that's all I got for ya!

GOOD LUCK!

TY lost for your reply. I must say that I have survived school supply and clothes shopping, and came out alive and on budget! Now for Friday Fun Nights. I took your game night and presented it, we had a child take it even one step further at enrollment, and wouldn't you know it....admin. shot it down. I am not sure how to feel about it. Board games went over well. However, this child suggested a "game off" where game boys/DS/X Box/PSP, etc. be brought in and tournaments be held. As a board, we thought what a great idea, we worked out some details, and took it through our admin liasion. Well, several things came up. Some of which we thought we had covered. The rating of the game, (we would confiscate and return to child at the end of the night), liability if something was broken (we would do this based on you bring it at your own risk), tv's would be needed (another liability). I guess we will be sticking to board games. I just hope that we can keep their attention, but we've added movies, which some of us are apprehensive, because some powers that be have stepped forward and said "hey, let the kids bring pillows and blankets" my problem with that is now we get to police the kids and make sure they are above the blankets. I know sounds silly, but after spending time at DARE camp last week, some of these kids know way more than I did when I was older than them! Anyway, I also was asked to be Secretary of PTO, so I gave up the chair as FFN. So, I get to let someone else take over those worries! Hope you have a great school year!!!!!!! And ty again!
