Well, first I wasn't sure where to post this topic.  I am glad to see our topics expanding with the addition to faith.  I wonder if MyFox4 would consider Health as a Topic as well.  Since there is not a health topic, I decided to post here as Lap Band is also in the news somewhat with it fast becoming the new and popular way to lose and keep off that extra weight.

So, in thinking about what I would write here, and knowing this could become very controversial.  I realize I am stepping out there, and while I am hoping for positive and constructive feedback, I will prepare myself for whatever comes my way.

I am interested in hearing from people who have had the procedure done.  Not who performed the procedure, as everyone is going to have a different experience that way.  I am considering the operation.  I will not go into great detail about my personal situation, except to say that of course there is always something else I probably could do or try.  However, (yes, there is a but) for me personally, I have exhausted what I feel are the options, and am ready to commit to this option.   I don't need anyone telling me to eat healthy and exercise.  I know all about that.  I know what my thyroid is doing, how my hormones are, etc.

I'm just interested in what the general comments are from people who have had this done, and followed their doctors orders.  As I heard a surgeon say, he is the doctor, he does the procedure.  After he's done, it's up to the patient to do the rest.  And I agree wholeheartedly.

All I ask is for positive feedback and constructive comments.  Most of us have been told "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."  I think we should practice this more.  Yes, even in an open, public forum.  And I too am going to practice that more myself!

A dear friend of mine was wanting that done. Even went to a seminar done by the doctor.. Dr. Mallie? Not sure of the spelling. Anyway, she did some checking and she doesn't have a lot of money. She found out that what insurance didn't cover, she would have to pay within 30 days. She doesn't have that kind of money, so she didn't do it, plus she is scared of complications.

They advertise a price of $14,500 and, of course, it can be financed. That seems like a tremendous amount to pay considering they also advertise the ease of the procedure and that it is much less invasive, so why the exorbitant price?

If you go into a doctor's office to have an ingrown toenail removed there will be a list of possible complications and side effects; enough to scare you half to death. That is the result of law moving into Medicine.

I would ask for a list of patients who have agreed to give their testimony about this procedure. I would ask for those who have had negative results as well as those whose results were positive. I would get my questions answered directly from them and also from my family physician.

Red Hotz,

I had a Lap Band installed February 12 with Dr. Malley, and have had nothing but a positive experience thus far. I was a self-pay because my insurance would not cover it. I am fortunate to be able to afford it, but there are several financing options available. Dr. Malley is the leading physician in the KC metro area for this procedure having successfully completing over 3000 operations.
As far as worrying what other people may think here, who cares? There will always be skeptics.
Nancy...as for the price consider this: that amount of money includes the price of the device which is 3,500 dollars, the anesthesiologist, the hospital stay, a full surgery, all your Dr. consultations leading up to it, plus all of your x-rays, adjustments, and follow up appointments for a year afterwards. To compare it to a ingrown toenail procedure is ridiculous.
Redhotz, In less than a month, without even having my first "fill" which is this Wednesday, I have already lost almost 20 pounds. Only a person who has dealt with weight issues on this level can truly understand this situation. Other people think that they know what they are talking about, but they just dont.
If interested, give me a way to contact you, and I will be more than happy to answer any and all questions you might have from a person who has first hand experience.

Hey, Stinky Finger, Nancy was not trying to compare the two procedures! Re read her statement before you flip your lid. I think she was just trying to provide Perspective about medical procedures and their touted risk.

You say that people should not worry about what people think... well, part of being an informed consumer is getting in touch with people who have direct experience with the issue.

Check your anger at the door before you respond next time.

Yes, I apologize for the comment of comparison between the two proceedures, I misread her statement.
As for what people may think, re-read her second paragraph.

Thank You Thank You Thank You one and all! I am hoping that I will be able to get in and get everything done in a timely manner. I lose my insurance Aug. 18, 2008 and otherwise I won't be able to do it. Right now, the surgeon I am looking at is booked beyond belief. So, I am praying for a miracle!

I'll say prayers redhotz. How much will your insurance cover?

They will cover the entire thing, however, I will lose coverage Aug. 18, 2008 as my husband is getting out of the military. So I am working on time crunch:( Soooo....I am hoping all goes well. I meet all the criteria. The one thing I have to do is a psych eval, but I talked to a clinical practitioner today and after our short visit, she said from what we talked about, I am a prime candidate. My insurance stipulates it must be a Psychiatrist or Psychologist though. So she is going to find me one through her clinic. Thank you for the prayers. I am going to keep everyone updated. And may even share before and afters!

I know that this works... a girl that I work with had the procedure done not too long ago. She loves to eat. Really loves to eat. And, one day she had to keep going to the bathroom to throw up, because she ate too much for dinner. Good luck to you! I hope you get the results you hope for. Most importantly, a more healthier you! Prayers are with you!

So long I'm wondering if I should start looking somewhere else. I have been to one other seminar, and I know that surgeon is good at general surgery. He only takes a couple consults per week, but could get me in an entire month earlier for consult. So, I'm thinking I might get the surgery in before losing benefits.
