PBS Program "Carrier"

Just curious as to how many watched/are watching the program on PBS titled "Carrier" this week about Navy Aircraft Carrier USS Nimitz?  I have been watching it, and so far, am fairly pleased with it.  I have learned some things that I wasn't familiar with, didn't know, and saw parts of a ship I didn't get the chance to before.  For the most part, the Nimitz isn't much different than the might G Dub that my husband is a part of.

I have to admit though, I am a bit disappointed that there was so much coverage about aviation and aircraft.  I realize that these ships are floating runways, and aircraft carriers are mainly about aviation.  And if it were not for the fact for me having a direct connection, perhaps I would know no different.  I just thought there would be more coverage about other shops/departments, and so on.  I am enjoying the program though, and plan on purchasing the entire set as my children don't get to stay up that late to watch it.

I hope you have had a chance to see it.  I do think that PBS will re play it.  So, if you've missed it, please check your local listings and watch the program.

This has been a great series and very well produced. I like the fact that you have a variety of people they are following. Along with that, it seems they haven't been edited much on saying what the feel about the war, military etc.

I could be wrong but I think it was filmed in 2003 or 2004. So I think some of these people may already be out of the military. I am somewhat shocked that they were given as much access throughout the ship as they got.

There are some they haven't shown yet so they will be available after they air on TV.

Hi redhotz, thanks for turning me on to this blog it's much more active the fox 43. I spent 3yr on the Forrestal CV59 the one that had the bad fire off the coast of Vietnam, McCain's ship. I spent 1 yr in engineering and the rest of the time working with the catapults and arresting gear. They are two completely different worlds,and it would be nice if they did cover more of the below deck world. Other than it's size the below deck working would be similar to many ships and I'm sure would be as interesting to viewers that have never been on ships and those who have been there. Security reasons would keep everybody out of the Nuclear spaces and that might have a lot to do with the concentration to the above deck activities. Carriers are fascinating, the word from the Bible that comes to mind is MEEK not the way it's used in the world but in the Bible it is used to describe power or strength under control, Jesus and Mosses were the only two individuals described as being MEEK.

Yes jd, I was a bit surprised to at the access, however, you'd be surprised at the coverage that the news channels have. (at least in VA) When we were there, our spouses were told that they could give us very little info. Then we'd turn around, and next thing we knew the local news was spouting off things we as spouses didn't know. Kinda crazy how the media works. not to minimize what these heros are doing, but I just didn't enjoy it. It seemed like MTV's real world on a boat. to much drama.

tb38...I understand where you are coming from, sadly though, that is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to drama on a ship. And to think about this, that was a carrier with up to 5,000 or more sailors/aircrew on it. Can you imagine a smaller boat? My husband says it can be worse! I am so thankful for the service as well, but was appalled when we first moved to the east coast and started hearing stories. Once my husband validated them, I was completely shocked. I was just glad that for the civilians watching, they got to see so many different sides/views of time in a life of a sailor. As I've said before, I just wish they would have shown more from other departments! Thank you for weighing in!
