If you listen to the news lately you obviously have picked up on a current theme of bashing detention deputies.  I agree that if a mistake is made it should be admitted and dealt with swiftly.  If there truly has been a mistake made.  But, it seems that as usual people choose to form an opinion based solely on what they see or hear on the television.   Why not?  The media always tell both sides of a story.....right?

Unfortunately, sometimes we are given only snipets of the actual footage that really is available.  We don't get to see the video before or after the horrible event. And once one widely publicized incident occurs, you amazingly have an epidemic of similar cases which rise to the surface, regardless of how long ago it occured or if it really has no relevance to the current story.  There is a reason for this, one incidence has us thinking to ourselves "Oh that can't really be true" but as soon as another clip is shown now we belive it all to be true.

So in the case of the Hillsboro jail incidents, are we shown enough to form an opinion of what truly happened?  Obviously in the case of the man in the wheelchair things got out of hand, but who are we to judge?  Were you there?  Have we seen the full video coverage?  And now we have an old video which has been dug up to prove that the deputies of the Hillsboro County Jail are unjustly abusing inmates.  Hello!!!  These people put themselves in the positions they are in.  Detention Deputies do not go out and find the criminals, they are brought to them to get them off of our streets and out of our neighborhoods.  Truly most of the deputies time is spent protecting the inmate from other inmates and providing for their care while they are at the jail, but as we know the people who commit crimes do not have the best manners nor do they feel they are obliged to follow instructions.  So in the case of the lady who was shown to be dragged to the ground and beaten, I am sorry it is clear she was not complying with the instructions she was given and the deputy was justified to use any means in order to maintain control.

Imagine a jail where inmates are allowed to not "comply."  It would be chaos beyond belief.  A place both deadly for the inmate and the officers who have chosen to protect and serve your community.  So before you make an opinion based on 10 seconds of video footage, demand to see the entire clip and form an educated opinion.  After all the criminals have the right to be considered innocent until proven guilty, should we not be extending the same to our officers?

"are we shown enough to form an opinion of what truly happened? "

In this case, yes. I've tried to imagine a scenario where the dumping and laughter would be justified. Couldn't do it. Kinda like if they blew his head off and then said "y'all don't understand". I think we do.

Part of the problem is salary. You want good guards, you pay for good guards.

Thank you for being a voice of reason. You are right. The Sheriff di not stand by when an obvious incident of police brutality occurred in the jail. Now a video of another incident crops up, and this time the Sheriff supports the deputies innvolved. I think at the very least he should be given the benefit of the doubt. If the woman in the video was disobeying the guard, the guards have the right, andeven the duty to take action. The last thing needed in a jail is chaos in which the prisoners are in charge.

The cops that did those terrible things, should be thrown into a cell with about a dozen inmates. Give those cops a dose of their own medicine.

rlynnes blog, it's not rocket science to figure out what happened in the wheelchair video was wrong, it was what it was and most people with common sense can figure this out.
in this case what you call a (snipet)is all it took. What do you think the guy could have done to justify her actions? dont you know how much training those morons had before being put in their chosen line of work? witch hunt? I'd say the witch part is right. I know those deputies are probably spoken to in a fowl way alot of the time but they know this before they ever start the job.

true there may indeed be 2 sides of a story..but NOTHING can ever justify "dumping" a disabled human being like he is a piece of trash onto the floor. NOTHING!!! he was not a threat! and how do you explain the other deputy laughing? what could possibly justify that? in this case..what we saw is more then enough! it sickens me! you do not treat human beings like this..especially the disabled.i dont care what he may have said at the time to "provoke" them..deal with it..thats your job..you are in a jail...not sunnybrook farm. if any one of us had done that to a disabled person would have been arrested w/o question.. the bottom line is this...they were wrong..they broke the law.and they ALL need to be prosecuted just like any one of us would be.

OK folks you are all obviously missing the point I was trying to make. I never said the deputy from the wheelchair incident should get off scott free. I was making a point that once one video like this is shown, dozens more crop up to add fuel to the fire. Where does it end? The only reason these people are bringing up this stuff is in hopes of suing the county.

When you allow this behavior to continue it allows the criminals to feel empowered against the justice system.

I agree abuse is abuse, unfortunately what are we to do allow the prisoners free reign without any fear of punishment?

And to K1662, MORONS? No training? Tell that to the next deputy who saves your sorry property from being robbed, or one of your family members murdered.

To Vittorio, money does not always make a difference in the way a person does their job. Although I am sure all deputies would agree to a raise, I am sure that respect from those they serve would mean alot also.

The problem is we keep lumping all deputies with just a few who have made mistakes. We are all human with human emotions and at some time all of us crack. What about the 22 years this woman spent as a good officer, protecting and serving? And as far as the other videos which keep popping up, if their superiors have viewed the videos and said their actions were substaintiated and within poicy who are we to judge?

I know she was a good officer for the same reason she is being accused now..... according to you video does not lie, well she has been taped for years while performing her job.
And since it was reported by the media that her 22 year service record was clean, again I must believe them ....after all the press would never stretch the truth and a video always shows the whole story

to K1662:

who are you to call someone a moron? I could stoop down to your level here, but then you would just beat me with experience. I wouldn't call the local law enforcement the next time you need help, you never know who might show up.

The MORONS are the ones who do something to get arrested in the first place--and this area has an overabundance. The wheelchair incident was inexcusable on the deputy's part but let one incident like this occur and every loon and moron thats been arested in the last 10 years suddenly has to come forward. Except for the wheelchair case they should all get nowhere. it was said best by Baretta on the 1970's cop series: "if you can't do the time don't do the crime." Shame he didn't listen to his own advice; but he just joins all the morons and idiots in jail today for doing something they shouldn't have done in the first place. And if some get roughed up, TOUGH!

Thank you Bozey45. Finally someone who can see who the real morons are, and who the real criminals are. If they just understood the phrase "come along peacefully" none of them would get roughed up, it is only when they get cocky and refuse to follow instructions that the officers have to give them a reminder of who is in charge.
