well i saw elizabeth espinosa report on recycling plastic bags, a few months ago, and again recently. when she asked a shopper what she will do with the bag, once she takes it home, the shopper refused to answer. but that question made me think, what does a person do with the bag after it's used to take their good to the grocery???? will recycling plastic bags work? will we put the effort in recycling plastic bags? should they just stop producing plastic bags so we are forced to use our own bags from home? i want to know what you all have to say about this, but i'll let you know what i'll do about this in the most honest way that i can.

1. what do i do with the bag after i used it to transport my groceries.

well i mostly just use it as a trash bag. it fit's perfectly in my lil trash can.

2.will recycling plastic bags work/will we put the effort in recycling plastic bags?

i don't think people will put the effort in recycling plastic bags. i'm assuming most use the bag as i do, and if they don't i doubt they will put the effort to take it to a local store for recycling.

3. should they just stop producing plastic bags so we are forced to use our own bags from home?

i think if they did, it would be the best way to force us to stop using them. it will also make it a hassle for us all to carry our food from the store to our homes. i wouldnt mind using my back packs for lil things, but what about a whole shopping cart full of food? it wont all fit in my backpack.

if your wondering how this all fits in to traffic, well i'll tell ya. plastic bags clog drains on the streets. when it rains it causes floods. when streets are flooded, cars aren't able to pass, or pass as quickly so it causes traffic. see how it effects traffic. lol. i'm kidding.

So do we! I actually bought some brown bags from stater Bros. They are really thick, we're supposed to take them into the store with us and use those in stead. Unfortunately we forget all about them and hit our forehead when we open the trunk and see them! duh! I can't get used to the routine. It drives me nuts! That and the fact that is say’s “STATER BROS” in big bold letters, feels a little awkward when we go to another store, like food for less or fiesta foods, vons, albertsons. Its just weird. But I wish we could remember and use them! Then again…..what will I put on the little trash cans? Go and buy little bags? As if.

yeah i know that odd feeling. it's like your taunting the store and the employees. i especially feel bad if it's a big store brand and showing it off to a mom and pop's store. that hurts.

well you have a good idea about the bags, maybe more people might do it, it's just something we have to get used too.

but i don't like the idea of using paper bags cuz they rip on me all the time, and cuz it's causing more trees to be cut down. i'll stick to small trips here and their and my back pack.

your right about buying trash bags. who in the right mind would pay for trash bags when you get them for free????

lol. yep. no these aren’t paper, I don’t know what material it is, but its very European. I remember my grandma using these to put her stuff in. In the rest of the world people take their "grocery bag" to the store! Its pretty cool, but.....what will we do about the little trash cans?????? what do they do? must buy the bags! so then, no matter what, your still hurting the environment, except we get our bags for free! he he sneaky Americans!

However because we use ours for trash they end up in the "trash can" not on the street???? how the heck does the bag end up in the street?

Have you been to Ikea lately? They charge 5 cents per plastic bag or you can buy one of their big blue bags for something like 50 cents.

I find plenty of uses for plastic grocery bags after I get the groceries home. Trash bags, something to carry wet clothes home from a pool party, for carrying my lunch to work, etc., but never once to carry home another load of groceries from the grocery store!

We used to use them to pick up after our dog took a dump outside of our condo. You know, doing our part to keep the city clean.

You can also give them you little children to play with if they get tired of their toys.

My husband hates the plastic bags. He always asks for the paper. I myself, like the bags. I hang on to a few of them and use them to put my dogs waste ( from the yard ) before I throw it in the garbage can. The rest I recycle.

target has those bags that you can reuse over and over again for $1.50 but they are so small you cant fit everything in there, and like they said before what if you have a big family you need bigger bags i would not want to have to buy 6 of the little bags.

ddain- i wish more people would do what you do i see alot of people just let there dogs go where ever they want and they dont pick up after them gross.

I use my plastic bags for my small trash cans. They fit just right and then you can tie them up with the handles. Otherwise I take them back to the store for recycling when I go shop for more groceries. They add up quickly. They dont only clog the drains, but if a plastic bag get stuck on the front of you car, it will overheat due to the lack of air flow to the radiator. So if you see one blowing around try to make sure it doesnt land on your car.

Hey samo714 , I guess we all use them for the same stuff as for recycling them ?? using them for trash I thought was reusing them?? well I think glad trash inc. is probably the culprit of this so we buy trash bags again ?whats the difference we buy or we recycle ??Well plastic shouldn't be littered around just like aluminum balloons, butts and fishing line are we going to stop all that too.heck Just do your best not to litter huh????? Thanks bc

i used to use plastic bags as a parrachute for my g.i. joes. depending on how heavy the toy was depends on if it works or not. so i'm guessing no one is going to recycle bags by bringing them back. seems like we are all doing a great job at reusing them in many different ways.

OMG I forgot about army men parachutes! The best was when you were a kid with an army man and plastic bag parachute and there was a tree in the neighborhood that was easy enough to climb for a true aerial insertion into the battlefield... little green army men were always so much more fun than Barbies!

hell yeah, but i have to admit the barbie cars were cooler then then hot wheel cars. just cuz they were the perfect size to fit any action figure in, plus do you remember the barbie camper. dang that thing was great at going through enemy territory.

Ralphs used to give 5c for every bag brought into the store and used for taking groceries home again.

1. When I get plastic bags I save them to use as trash can liners.
2. When I get too many I return them to the store for recycling. But last time there was a strike, an employee at one of my stores told me they were just throwing them away because they had too many. What's the point?
3. I went ahead and bought 4 of those reuseable bags a couple months ago. You can fit so much more stuff in them and they don't tip over in your trunk. Plus my store knocked off 5c per bag at checkout.

Does this mean I'll have to start buying trash can liners -- or give them up all together?

hmm, 5 cents off for each bag that wasn't used. that's pretty good. i guess reusable bags are good for small purchases only, and you can get the regular bags for large bulk purchases. so you still have bags for trash lining and your still saving a few bags from being used.

Hey Samo...Thanks for your comments on my blog...haha! Funny guy...and fyi, I took an insulated bag to my local Trader Joes today and was given a coupon to fill out for a chance to win $25 in food at the store...maybe more chain stores should offer premiums that will force us to make the change to bringing our own bags?? Plus the insulated bag $3.99 bux purchased months ago, kept my frozen stuff frozen while I finished my errands!

really, that's a pretty sweet deal christine. if they were all giving up things like that more of us would bring them back. hell 25 bucks worth of food, hell yeah i'll do it. but the whole winning thing blows. i never win in anything. i'm pretty unlucky on that type of thing.

by the way christine, your cute awwww lil hearts flying over my head.
