End Times; Perilous Times; Sound Familiar

In my Sunday night church, we have been studying the books of 1 and 2 Timothy.  In the 3rd chapter of 2 Timothy, is the following.  See if any of it sounds familiar to you.
I have included the whole chapter for context purposes.  For more, got to biblegateway.com if you don't have your own Bible.

Chapter 3

1 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! 6 For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts, 7 always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. 8 Now as Jannes and Jambres (the magicians in pharaohs court that duplicated Moses' turning his staff to a serpent) resisted Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, disapproved concerning the faith; 9 but they will progress no further, for their folly will be manifest to all, as theirs also was. 10 But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance, 11 persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra--what persecutions I endured. And out of them all the Lord delivered me. 12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. 13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

There are many people who appear to be good and godly, yet they deny who God really is.

Excellent post, Sip! We are ABSOLUTELY in the End Times.
Things are going to continue to get worse.

The close we get to the end, the more things will unravel. Hopefully, people will wake up, and turn to The LORD, before it's too late!

I disagree. There is no endtimes anytime soon. People turn to God and faith when things go sour as they do they decide not to fix their problems so problems get worse. Your endtimes is just a time right now where people are lazy.

Sipedo - I love the quick searches on Biblegateway.com. Thanks for raising the topic. There is indeed great brokenness in this world and yet the hope, in the interim until Christ's return, is that there can be personal transformation through the application of God's Word in our lives. Keep blowing the trumpet, Watchman!

I've been listening to the bible on the site...
Good site...
My comprehension is very different, there is a lot of wisdom, wisdom is timeless, but it seems extremely outdated in todays fast-function environment...
The book was written for a different set of values...
Discipline is godliness...
Live as christ, stay balanced...
I don't understand if one could live so divinely why others cannot do the same...
Or strive to be divine in every aspect of life, without being possesive about their savior...
If GOD personified is Jesus, than Jesus is GOD personified...`
Is Jesus as universal as the divine presence of the universe?
I don't sin, I don't like drama...
Its a conscious decision...
Thats the conlcusion I got after listining to Timothy...

Everyone is born in sin or something right?
At least the part that kept going about the oxen was outdated...

I think the problem I'm having is the seperation of Jesus and GOD, but they are one in the same...

Jesus dying for our sins is a generous gesture and I thank him for doing it...
I think I look at GOD beyond the organized religion...
I don't feel I need someone to tell me how to interpret something...
I'm all for reason, and gaining wisdom...
After listening to the whole book of Tim, this post seemed to underline a lot of negativity..
All I got from it was living divinely and selfless ,always forgiving, gain and instill wisdom, discipline is godliness in conscious, and how living as christ was the bottom line...
I believe the scripture is holy, but it is not infallible, only GOD is perfect...
It is still a book, violently pagan with sacrifice, many astrological references, where jesus represents the solar deity in religions past, the cross is the cross of the zodiac...
Mostly based on egyptian theology...
I'm not knocking or trying to prove anything,
I'm trying to learn about things i don't know...
I feel the church houses racism...
We are social animals, but to be ignorant is a personal choice that one can overcome with knowledge...
Dida you are well versed, but my self-discipline is very hard to rival...

I think I see a side of christians that, in the back of their mind they understand that sin is "human," the absolute of doing whatever they want "KNOWING all is forgiven allows them to never reach their full potential in anything, or do things

Organized religion? Would that include following the teaching of Meher Baba? Or would that fall under the category of someone telling you have to interpret something? Sorry, Gorilla, but I couldn't resist a friendly tweek :-)

You said, "I believe the scripture is holy, but it is not infallible, only GOD is perfect..." - The claim is that all scripture is "inspired by God" literally translated "God-breathed." If it is the Word of God from the perfect God, then His Word is also perfect (infallable).

Mostly based on egyptian theology..." - pagan is defined as irreligious, hedonistic, or polytheistic. The Bible is clearly against paganism, so any attempts by you to categorize it that was is a destortion of the text. Reference to astrology is are descriptions of the practices of other religions (or astronomy for the purpose of measuring times and season in a more scientific manner).

As for the church being racist ... the text isn't racist, people in churches that act in racist ways are not true to the biblical texts. My relationship with Christ and the truth of the Bible confronted my racist tendencies.

Gorilla - your self-discipline is a very admirable quality.

To the contrary of your assertion, for me personally, knowing that I am forgiven motivates me and frees me to pursue the qualites and charactersitics that help me to grow in holiness and serve sacrifically.

I screw up and fall short of living out to perfection what I believe, so that make me a hypocrite. I believe what the Bible says and strive to apply it in my life, so I am narrow-minded. I believe that a Jew from Nazareth is the only savior of humanity, so I guess that makes me a bigot too. That is why I am so glad that I am forgiven :-)

When I think of paganism all I think about is the blood sacrifice of animals at altars...
Thats all it talked about for half of numbers...
I think you hit the devout christian, which I highly respect...

Maybe cuz I haven't been constantly immersed in scripture I still look at it as a storybook of morals...
Which we need more of...

This planet has been blasted more than once. No telling whether ancient civilizations existed before these destructive bombardments. No telling whether we'll be here for long. Still, it doesn't matter.


Life in the universe will certainly go on with or without us. You are a bug on a leaf, a mere drop in an eternal ocean of being. Just enjoy it and quit trying to figure it out. Don't worry about what you are or who is in charge of you, just live and your job will be done.

Norty, do you believe there is a distinct possibility that you could be wrong? Does that ever make you want to lay off of people who express faith in Jesus Christ? It's not a joke. Whether you are right or wrong, it's for all eternity. Are you willing to make that your legacy? Will you even have a legacy?

No, I do not believe there is a distinct possibillity that I am wrong and, yes, I would view the desuperstitioning of the world to be a great legacy, one that is far greater than any church can leave behind.

What is a joke is that people still believe these fantasies and alow their lives to be controlled by them.

What is a joke is that people are still waiting for some being to destroy the planet because they believe that we are all guilty and dirty. That is nothing more than self loathing and the loathing of others.

Sipi, you can have your own church if you like. Just tell a few thousand people that if they step on a crack, it will break their mother's back. Some of them will believe you, in spite of a lifetime of experience that proves otherwise, and will join your church. You can even mount a big vertebra on the roof for good measure.

You'll get testimonials from mothers who have suffered a broken back, thus "proving" that someone angered god by stepping on a crack.

You can then spend the rest of your lives trying to figure out which cracks are better than others, whether you should hop over the cracks or go around them, and what foods you should eat on Fridays.
