SIPEDO and YOU

by sipedo from Brooksville, Florida

Last Post 8 hours Ago

I know some of you read the Bible, and have even studied it.  I have some software called Bible Explorer that I use mostly.

I know some of you have read the Bible, but have only read PARTS of it.

Some of you have read the whole thing, and you put it away.

Some have never read it, yet somehow they claim to be authorities on it.

I know that some churches, which I choose not to name, actually discourage reading the Bible, teaching that only the ordained are qualified to read it and interpret it.

Politicians routinely use parts of the Bible in their speeches, but it is all too often out of context.

So, DO YOU read the Bible?  Not just in the past, but do you routinely read it?

It might be worth picking it up again.

Every night when my grandfather would tuck me in bed we would read one page of the bible. He said it would insure sweet dreams! He has past on now and I haven't read it since. The reason is because of things I have witnessed or gone through with certain churches and preachers, so I haven't touched it since. I have found my own beliefs now within my Indian bloodline, some which still covers parts of the bible but not all of it. I now practice the Native American way, so please don't hold that against me!

Heck, I would love to have that Indian blood..I do believe in those whatchamacallit....Dream sorry I having a mental block. In any case, my Father had a wonderful Indian friend who game him this wooden hand made Dream Catcher..(I got it!!) well I still have it..it must be at least 40 years old and I just met another Indian in St. Pete and I bought a beautiful one for my son. I believe that God's spirit lives within us...thus our body IS OUR TEMPLE...God Bless.

The constant spawning of hundreds of "Christian" denominations since the Protestant Reformation, all with conflicting teachings based on their own interpretations of the Bible, demonstrates that politicians aren't the only one taking the Bible out of context these days. Blessed are those who are wise enough to realize that "that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation" (2 Peter 1:20) and as humble as the Ethiopian eunuch who, when asked if he understood what he was reading in the Bible, said: "How can I, except some man should guide me?" (Acts 8:31).

If anyone is going to a church that DISCOURAGES it's members from reading the Bible or doing Bible studies on their own, you should RUN!!!!! RUN for your life!!!

Context rules and everyone who can read or listen to Bible cd's can learn to decipher scriptures. It helps to have a good pastor who can deliver God's word, but I have know MANY who are not a part of any clergy who can deliver God's word.......

The Bible has some insight on how to conduct yourself as a responisble citizen. It lead Gandhi to develope his idea of Sanchingraha (or "Soul Force"). the Bible however is a violent book and some of its messages are outdated. A resposible person of faith needs to expand thier horizons beyond just this one book. It has been tainted over the years by the decree of tyrants, mistranslations (moses crossed the the of reed not the red sea). and in many cases has been used as a veil for murder under gods will (the crusades, inquisition, neoconservative ideology are a few examples). So the Bible in my opinion cam be a start to lead someone to an ethical peace but lacks the compassion men like Jesus preached, for you see it is not his word at all it is the word of man and his experieces with god, not the word of god.

Funny how some people who equate reading the Bible to going to church. The two are, although not mutually exclusive, are two different things. I encourage anyone to read the Bible, even if you don't believe in the God of the Bible, it contains practical helps for everyday living. Just try reading Proverbs or Ecclesiastes for some practical wisdom. Too bad I don't apply much of it to my own life.

the Torah, Bible and the Qur'an.
Religiously.

We should grow wiser with time, wise to realize something becoming outdated.
The hope all texts inspire are not rivaled except through a living precept.
We need no social support to believe in anything.
Organization breeds hate.

I read the Bible, some days more than others. Every time I pick it up I learn, or glean something new from it. My Bible is highlighted
throughout its pages. I can't think of any book that is truer, more interesting, or that makes me examine myself more.

Yawn... too boring for me. 99% has absolutely NOTHING to do with life today. The view on women is more than a little outdated. I'll pass, thanks.

JersyGirl - read Proverbs 31 - what I might call "Ode to the working woman" is pretty high praise.

sipedo,
Great post.
In answer to your question....
I find the answers to ALL of life's problems in the pages of that old worn out bible. It is the same yesterday, tomorrow, and forever. My little girl says that the BIBLE is OUT-DATED...funny everything we are facing today is talked about in the bible...we just have to know where to look.

I remember taking a World History class at Eastern Michigan University. When I was reading the text, it was almost like reading the Bible. Many of the stories were nearly identical.

JerseyGirl, Have you read the whole Bible? How do you know that 99% has NOTHING to do with life today? Do you understand the cultural context in which it was written pertaining to women? If your post here is any indication, I don't think you have, and I don't think you do.

How do books like Leviticus and Numbers relate to life today?

Leviticus and Numbers had a specific purpose for the people of Israel.

Leviticus detailed the law, and even things like preparation of food. If you follow the laws of food preparation as outlined in Leviticus, you might be surprised at how healthy you would eat. The law was given to show us that we do not measure up, and that we will never measure up. No man can keep the law fully.

Numbers was as census and geneology. If you want to find out who was in what family, although it does not list everyone, you can see from Numbers who fit where in history.

Hi, I'm a musician, I live in a house and I have 3 dogs. I believe in God and Jesus, and am the most imperfect person in the world. The hand I have been dealt is better than most, but not as good as others. I am blessed to be alive, and looking forward to the day when this body will be replaced.
