This year, the travel industry hasn't been as busy as in previous years.  I am working on a few things, but I am not overwhelmed. I am overwhelmed by cleaning companies, copy machine companies, drinking water companies, and advertisers coming into my office looking for business. I also get at least 2 automated calls per day telling me the business has been approved to a new credit card. One day I even got a call that I won a free trip. Yipeee.

How is YOUR business, and what is affecting it? What do you do to get more business?

I manage a Video Duplication company in NYC. This is a dying industry due to proliferation of low cost Digital/HD camera and editing equipment being brought to the market as well as the transformation from videotape to low cost Digital files (.AVI/MPEG/.MOV etc). Customers can do in their home today what a few years ago had to be done in a full blown Production/Post Production facility. Don’t get me wrong, business is strong and we are doing well, but we have to fight for business a lot more than we did a few years ago. In this business, you are only as good as your last job, so quality is job #1. You can lose an entire account over one small error. Of course, just about everything is last minute so we also have to be able to turn a job around quickly no matter what the size. We strive to do both and we succeed 99.9% of the time. Our facility can handle just about any format imaginable (including all HD formats) and if we don’t have a particular piece of equipment we’ll find a way to get the job done. Many facilities just say “no, sorry we don’t have that equipment”. We go over and beyond to keep or bring in a new client. We have created a New Media division where we can convert video to/ from digital files as well as create DVD’s etc. This will hopefully allow us to stay in business for years after videotape becomes extinct.

Slgps, do something different with your travel biz. Find what's not out there and sell it. My husband and I don't use travel agents because we prefer a more unique experience away from chain hotels and the usual tourism traps. A theme park is a theme park is a theme park. After you've done that route once, who cares? I know there are many out there like us who camp on islands, stay dockside at marinas, check out local dining and explore the back roads. Maybe something along those lines? The local-run places are being squeezed out by the big commercial ones that all the tours hit. It might take some major work to set up, but I bet it'd be successful.

My business is smokin, The new housing market has gone belly up. And now my phone is ringing off the hook. This great in two ways I am busy and since the new housing market is going belly up the illegals are out of work.HAHA
The greedy builders use the illegals becuase they are CHEAP LABOR! But homeowners don't want them in their homes. GOOD! NOW GO HOME ILLEGALS YOUR CHEAP LABOR IS NO LONGER NEEDED.

Boogy has hit the nail on the head (with a very big hammer). As long as Americans insist on the cheapest prices so we can have MORE we will encourage imports made in sweatshops and undocumented workers who work off the record. To illustrate how nuts we've become, and I count myself in there with everyone else, when I dropped clothes at the local thrift store I noticed huge boxes and bins overflowing with bags of donated clothing and small household items. I admit most of what I gave away was worn less than 10 times because I was glammed by the shopping experience and made bad buys. It's certain a good portion of the stuff I saw behind the thrift store falls into the same category. No big deal! It's cheap! We are nuts.

Yes, Scribe, Boogy has hit the nail on the head. I am glad he shared that with us. You figure that as a travel agent, the illegal situation wouldn't affect me. If Boogy was a client of mine, now he would be in a better position to use my services, and the services of others. You are right about specializing in the Travel industry. Cruises, airline tickets and Honeymoons are easy for people to book online. The are also easy for "order takers" that are not travel professionals....give anyone a toll free number and a website, and they call themselves Travel Agents. Sheeeshhh. Thanks for supporting Travel Agents!

They get it after they have to call me and I have to charge them twice as much to fix the BLEEP they allowed some hack to do the first time.
