As I was watching my children play the other evening I was wondering what is the deal with Lightening Bugs?

I mean, here is this rather ordinary looking flying insect, that has a glow-in-the-dark rear end.

I'm sure science has all kinds of explanations about how this fluorescent fanny is useful for mating and other stuff, but why did God choose to make the lightening bug glow?

Just watching the kids and the Lightening bugs takes me back to those summer nights of my youth. I'd be running around the yard with my empty Mason jar, racing toward the flashing lights all around me. I still feel the joy and hear the laughter echoing through my memories.

Lightening bugs were as much a part of summer as fireworks, fresh tomatoes, and big slices of juicy watermelon.

God created so much diversity in this world, much more than is needed for us to enjoy it.

We can get so busy surrounding ourselves with man-made goods that we don't notice the living tapestry all around us.

The only purpose I can see for the painted rear end of a bug is the laughter you hear and the smiles you can see on everyone's face.

S-Mom,
I don't know if you write or not, but by looking at this post, you should. Its great therapy. Your choice of words is wonderful. "Tapestry", what a beautiful description. I remember getting in trouble a couple times for putting holes in the tops of the re-usable Mason jars.

Survivormom,I think this should be added to my blog,"I double Dare Ya" :0) Although,I used to call them "glowbugs". My mother used to get mad at my friend for smashing the poor critters on the ground just to see the "glow"being smeared. I'd yell at her and tell her to go home!!! LOL!

My kids also have fun catching them. Using any glass jar or can with the lid and filling it up with grass. They also like letting the glowbugs crawl on them. And watching their wings spread and fly away. As for me,I prefer butterflies :0)

May sound "korny", but I have been writing poetry ever since I was little girl. The writing of stories came into place after the ordeal I went through with my ex and someone once said...."your life should be in a Lifetime movie", it got me thinking that I should write a book. So in my spare time (lol what is that) I write. I still do my poetry, but I like to write about life!! Things people take for granted or just don't think about.

Angelbluz...I thought the same thing :o)
And I also got into trouble for making holes in those lids. Sometimes I even took the Tupperware bowls...that was a bigger no-no :o)

survivormom,
Have you had any of your stories or poetry published? When I lost my mother 19 years ago,I wrote a poem about her and sent it in to be published, they liked it and wanted me to buy their book which would have cost $50. I said noway. I then lost the poem and it made me upset. :0(
But,if you haven't ,then give it some thought.
There is a website that I go to once in awhile called poetry.com My neice even has a couple of short poems on the site.

Best of luck to you :0)
