Anna Nicole Smith passed away, leaving behind a 5-month old baby daughter.  She had obviously decided Howard Stern was her best choice as partner and father for her baby.

In a not so unusual turn of events (for the wealthy and famous or infamous) another man laid claim to the parentage of the baby, and paternity was soon to be tested.

It is now being reported that an additional three men have come forward trying to lay claim to having fathered this baby.

This is extremely unusual as almost 100,000 babies were born to single mothers in 2006, and let’s face it, exactly how common is it to have that many men come out of the woodwork, laying claim to having parented a baby?  Most men, sadly, run the opposite direction. (As a former welfare worker with the state, I assure you, I have seen my share of these cases.)

What exactly makes paternity of THIS baby so attractive to these men?

There are two theories here:

  1. Money
  2. A claim to fame (why didn’t they make such claims before she passed?)
  3. I think this is a hideous commentary on human nature.

Are we to believe the intentions of these men are pure and altruistic in nature, and the child’s welfare is the ONLY cause inspiring their concern?

This poor baby will have a hard enough time growing up motherless, a dark legacy overshadowing her entire life.  Focus needs to be made strictly on her welfare, and I cannot see how giving media attention to these obvious selfish attempts to exploit the situation can be helpful.

The media ought to focus on the tens of thousands of other situations where the fathers are, for lack of better description, MIA.  It would be far more productive.

    Just my opinion.

Frankly, I'm tired of the whole thing. It's just not news any more. When the cause of death has been determined, report that. Same for the paternity. Enough is enough.

I'm with Vittorio. I'm ready to vomit over the whole thing. I just turn the TV off when I hear her name mentioned and I carefully avoid "news magazine" programs.

We have watched Good Day Tampa Bay and Fox News 13 since it became Fox many, many years ago. I've lived on this coast since 1982 but hail from Horse Country, TN. In RL I not only run two websites, but am researching a compilation work for publication (I can disappear for days in my books!) I work with wildlife (naturally Cynthia Smoot is one of my fave journalists!) and I like to participate in the "wildlife" here on the Blogs - a little human interaction is a refreshing change on occasion. However, hiding behind a monitor does not give one license to be rude; personal attacks reveal their maker's own inadequacies and insecurities as a speaker. (Is that the best ya' got???) Thoughts and opinions may differ (thank God for choice as Americans!), but the more reasonable a differing opinion sounds, the more likely the listener is to consider it fairly. Be safe, be fair, be nice - and most importantly, don't run with scissors. They haven't invented downloadable bandaids yet.
