I have received another one of those inflammatory statistic-driven emails. It got me to thinking.  (In the morning on the first cup of coffee, I admit this to be a dangerous thing...)   I did not author this email -  - I adore my own doctors - but it does give pause for thought; I've seen enough to know they ARE out there...(Always the bad ones in anything to get the press)

The number of physicians in the U.S. is 800,000.

Accidental deaths caused by physicians per year are 120,000.

Accidental deaths per physician -- .0171.*

Now think about this:  Guns

The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000.  (Yes, that's 80 million)

The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups, is 1,500.

The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is .000188.

So, statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.

Remember, "Guns don't kill people, doctors do."

I did a quick check online of the “facts” (the sources cited in the email – the FBI and US Department of Health & Human Services) but had no real luck on the FBI site, however, the NRA and Brady Campaign numbers DO appear to support the gun fact assertions.  Couldn’t locate squat on the USDHHS site, but on USA Today’s site the number of doctor’s is validated.  http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2005-03-02-doctor
-shortage_x.htm

Either way, it’s an amusing read.

Let’s face it:  Out of EVERY graduating class of doctors, only 10% were at the top 10% of their class!  And 50% were at the bottom half!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course, the same holds true for every other professions too!

Half the people you meet were at the bottom half of THEIR class!  (And that's based on those who did NOT drop out!)  Explains EVERYTHING when you think about it!

I betcha if doctors were really held responsible for their work, their kill rate would go down. "I'm so sorry but your (mother, father, son, daughter...etc.) didn't make it. Here's your bill."

No cure? No pay, and no malpractice insurance needed. Fees would drop. I hope that's not too anti American for y'all.

Have you ever wondered why attorneys don't have to carry malpractice insurance?

;-)

Liability insurance is quite common for lawyers, and it is sold by many major insurance companies.

Often it is not called malpractice insurance. Common other terms for it are liability or "errors and omissions" insurance.

Lawyers are not required to carry it, and many in-house counsel are insured by their employer's liability insurance.

I am not sure if doctors are required to carry malpractice insurance as I know very little about the practice of medicine in Florida.

Wow.

Um, dumb question time - I admit I am really good at these with alarming regularity - (and no, this ain't a joke even if it sounds like one)

What kind of attorney sues other attorneys?

I cant wait for computer chip brain implants so we can download a medical education at the 7-11 for $9.99! That way we can be our own doctors!

Wow stunning statistics. But in all reality you say doctors are more dangerous than guns.... The statistics only say "accidental" shootings. So reality if you were to add all the deaths involving a gun....I'm sure it would be much higher.

To answer your question "What kind of attorney sues other attorneys?"

First of all, it would likely be an "attorney at law." (A lawyer) I don't mean to be a smartass, but there are other types of attorneys.

Lawyers bring suit against other lawyers for various reasons. Often it is on a rather cordial basis as they are asking a judge to settle a point of law in a disputed issue. You see this often in appeals courts.

Lawyers also engage other lawyers for specialty work. I.e. a corporate lawyer may engage a patent lawyers for specific work. A divorce lawyer may need to bring in a tax lawyer on a complicated case. If the two lawyers have a dispute it is sometimes settled with a lawsuit.

I hope that answers your question.

Answers the question - thank you Crankyman!

(The question almost BEGGED a smat@ss response - LOL - but you handled it beautifuly, and I appreciate it, since it honestly had never occurred to me that attorney's could be negligable... Go figure, but I guess somethings in life one must be exposed to to learn about.)

Learn somethin' new every day.... :D

We have watched Good Day Tampa Bay and Fox News 13 since it became Fox many, many years ago. I've lived on this coast since 1982 but hail from Horse Country, TN. In RL I not only run two websites, but am researching a compilation work for publication (I can disappear for days in my books!) I work with wildlife (naturally Cynthia Smoot is one of my fave journalists!) and I like to participate in the "wildlife" here on the Blogs - a little human interaction is a refreshing change on occasion. However, hiding behind a monitor does not give one license to be rude; personal attacks reveal their maker's own inadequacies and insecurities as a speaker. (Is that the best ya' got???) Thoughts and opinions may differ (thank God for choice as Americans!), but the more reasonable a differing opinion sounds, the more likely the listener is to consider it fairly. Be safe, be fair, be nice - and most importantly, don't run with scissors. They haven't invented downloadable bandaids yet.
