Russell Rhoades did a previous blog similar to this one, but we all answered it with the basics of life.  Not the things we actually do on a more personal level, that ARE basic but we tend to consider more superfluous.

I don't know about y'all, but budgets being what they are these days, I am finding more and more I am getting by doing less and less for myself.

I have rediscovered that being an "easy breezy Cover Girl" can do as nicely as the makeup selection at the mall, and I am literally getting back to my roots - after 20 years I quit coloring my hair in April.  I no longer have porcelain nails.  I do my own pedicures.  I've had to learn how to cut hair.  I quit buying my favorite razors and now buy the cheap disposable ones - though I had to relearn how to shave the legs with these things.  Ouch!

Whatever budget there is for clothes, well, as a MOM I find I can make do for another season/year with what I've got so I have a little extra for my daughter.  How are we extending our own mom/wife wardrobes?  How are we updating them, if at all?  Have you cleaned out your wardrobes and swapped with friends and neighbors, an updated version of "hand-me-downs?"

Are you keeping up gym memberships or going it on your own at home?  Taking "power walks" with other women in your neighborhood?

My hubby and I have redisovered "date night" at home and where we used to spend an easy $100 on a simple evening out, we can do the same "in" for the price of a bottle of wine and some steaks on the grill. (Think romantic inexpensive recipes FOX)  Entertainment... well, I have to say that in these budgeted times, there's a lot to be said for quality alone time.  Who knows, maybe we'll see another generation of "baby boomers" soon.

For years Ann Dwyer has felt like "a girlfriend" - I know I am not alone since she has remained so very popular on Good Day.  She has "taken us" on shopping expeditions in the past.  She can speak our language, is personable, and she uses humor to in a good way.  I'm wondering if FOX would entertain the notion of having Ann do a series for women (guys too if they're interested) on the personal changes we've made to adjust to the current financial situations all around.  With Nerissa/Laura and Jen there in the morning too,  well, seems to me a lot could be brought to the table.

Ladies?  What would you be interested in seeing?  What changes have YOU made?  What are you willing to share to help the rest of us out?

Guys, don't be afraid to  jump in - you all must be making some adjustments, too.  Just picture Russell or Tom on that end of the story!  (Throw in Dave and Charlie and it'll be a party!) :P

I haven't worn Estee Lauder since I quit the corporate world and paycheck that went with it. I haven't dyed my hair since I decided I like my greys and was tired of dealing w/the roots. I do my own nails too. But I always have. My husband uses his baby sander on my feet to keep them smooth since I don't wear shoes unless I'm leaving the house and then it's flips. I do splurge on Veet. But my back doesn't like it when I shave. Veet is easier for me. Tho, I use a washcloth to rub the hairs off. Not the useless remover they give you w/it. It's cheap shampoo too. No more Paul Mitchell in this house.

I buy an new article of clothing every once in a while, but like you, my money goes for the kid to look stylin. That spree is coming in a few short weeks. Whee.

We always do 'date night' at home. In the 10 years w/our kid, I think we've had three 'dates'. We're homebodies. We don't mind.

I cut where I can. My hubby drives all day for work and is only reimbursed $50/wk. He spends way more than that on gas. I'm thankful we have a mortgage we can still afford and not too much debt so our monthly expenses are still doable.

Our health & homeowners are big expenses. But I don't see that changing w/the guard either. Good thing I didn't hold my breath when our Governor said he'd fix that. Ha! My phatbutt!

Food is still a big expense. But I'm not compromising on some things like organic milk. I will spend the money. Winn Dixie usually runs good sales on their organic milk. Winn Dixie is cheaper folks! I love Publix, but I only go there when I need something the ot

....others don't carry. I bet they miss me cuz I stock up when I go. I usually buy for two weeks at a time. Their bottom line shows I'm not going there as often ;) Since putting in our gardens and getting rewards, my produce bill has gone down. Yay!

I certainly don't take trips to Target 'just because' any longer. Nor do I go out to lunch w/girlfriends like I used to. None of us can afford it. At least we're not alone in our cutting back.

hehehehehehe.... I do save money paying bills on line. No stamp or check required. No wonder the post office is always raising rates.

At least I'm past the diapers & formula expense!

I wish I were more optimistic that this too will pass. I won't hold my breath there either.

I agree the gals in the AM should have more presence! Girls Rule! Boys Drool! (as my kid says)

WordyOwl is always WelcomeOwl :D (Any friend to the critters is a friend of mine)

Part of me was sad to leave the workplace and we worried about the loss of the other half of our income. Well, when I quit buying wardrobe, pantyhose, cosmetics, pantyhose, gas, pantyhose, car repairs, did I mention pantyhose ?!?!?!) we realized we COULD "do" on one income.

So now we cut again. And it occurs to me there's got to be hundreds if not thousands of local women looking around at where else to trim.

I've started a garden, but it is very very young and not producing, so my produce stand up the way is a Godsend. Like you, "just because" trips are gone byebye.

I've got a card at a local beauty supply shop where I can buy shampoos and conditioners for under $10 for almost a gallon each (yes, the salon kind) At the same place I can get a 32 ouncer of cocoa butter lotion for $3. I just checked my labels too - made in America. ;-)

My sister is a Sephora girl, and frankly can afford to be one, but we are constantly asked if we are twins and she is 4 years younger. Her facial skin care line versus my regiment of olive oil for moisturizing and handmade olive oil soap ... well, the math is obvious.

Yes, thank goodness diaper days are over here too. Formula was never an issue for me, but then I had to be the one eating right.

Oh, and PS: "Girls Rule" because they can make "Boys Drool!" :D

Barefoot? You? Me too!!!!!!!!! Grew up that way, so it was a HUGE relief to be out of heels and those stoooooopid pantyhose. (Oh I loathe those things...I now own one black pair in case of a funeral...morbid I know, but shopping for the darn things at a time like that is too much.) Going barefoot is a terrific excuse to give yourself a nightly footsoak (inexpensively done with Epsom Salts and a dollop of shampoo for scent if you like) and sit on your behind for awhile.

Olive oil eh? I've used it on my hair before but not my face. Makes sense actually.

MrsBradley, you make a good point about the beauty supply stores. There is one near me.

Ah, pantyhose... You should have two pairs in case the first one runs when putting them on for the first time. I used to order my Leggs through the mail. They came in multi-pair bags and were much cheaper than the store. Every once in a while one of the legs was longer than the other, but 99& were great. I don't miss them at all either.

One income has been doable. Considering, as you mentioned, the income from a job would go to daycare, gas & pantyhose, I need to figure out something to do from home. Something I've never had to seriously ponder before. But I have talents. Finding a viable use for them is the ticket.

Yes, we can make them drool and act like fools. We can also pop a kid out and keep walking. ;)

Never underestimate the power of a Woman.

When I had to quit work back in 1999 due to my health it became a way of life to learn how to do without things we were used to getting. Our son was only one then and I was lucky enough to work as a kindergarten teacher at a daycare where I could take my son and not have to pay full price for day care. Now I am a coupon clipper and buy whatever I can in bulk just so I don't have to buy one at a time. In the past year I had to buy more clothes due to the fact that I lost 75 pounds the hard way. Pain will do that to ya. We don't go out much at all anymore unless it's to a local park that dosn't cost anything to get in and thank good ness for our above ground pool. Don't have to use the gas to go to the beach and one gallon of chlorine is cheaper than gas anyway. It's amazing how much you can find to do if you only look right at home. Guess you can always find a bright side to anything if you look. Now if I could only find a way to afford all my medicine any cheaper I'd be good to go.

And I bet your make up looks just as good, and also your nails toes and hair? You have found out by circumstance, what our parents new by instinct. That being that we can all do without a lot of needless stuff and be just as well off. And dare I say just as happy! When life throws you off balance, shed that excess weight and keep close to your center the things that matter the most.

Reminds you of that blog I wrote about us all having too much money huh?*lol*

I use olive oil shampoos and conditioners too.

Good idea about th pantyhose - wonder if there's any truth to the rumor that keeping them in the fridge makes 'em last longer? I cannot tell youhow many pairs I lost right outta' the package - RIP! ARGH!

Janice I feel for you. I'm home with lupus. Have you goen to Walmart and gotten their list of reduced RX meds? We were without insurance for five years. It was horrid.

Ah, look girls! We got one of "our guys" in! Yes, we girls have fed into the more expensive is betetr line on more than one occasion, and have learned, in our "old age" that we really are FINE the way we are! And we don't need to spend big bucks to be gorgeous! :D

I had read your blog, Mustang, and it was so funny in a way. We have one land line. Haven't ahd cell phones in years LOL We've gotten rid of so much superfluous cr@p there's little left to dispense with. (So glad to see one of our guys here, truly!)

I cut back on expenses by transferring jobs. I am now only 5 blocks from work
(as opposed to 22 miles one-way), which means I can walk or ride a bike there. No more weekly fuel fill-ups.

I no longer go to Wal-Mart before work- mainly because it is no longer convenient. Since I am now working in the same town, I no longer pass any stores on the way to work.

I switched auto insurance- a savings of $120/month. I also switched my cell phone plan- a savings of $30/month.

I cut out many of the "snacks" I usually buy. This is also a great way to lose those inches I gained during the school year ? In the mornings, I work out at home, walk, or ride bikes with my son.

I like to vacation, so I look for discounted prices (at least 1/2 off) or free admissions for teachers. This helps considering I have to pay for myself and my son. Another thing that helps is buying the annual pass for places my son likes to visit. Sea World offers a free “study pass” for teacher so I bought my son an annual pass. Because admission is now “free” for both of us, we don’t have to see everything in one day. We usually eat breakfast at home, stay at the park a few hours and come home to eat lunch. When we visit the park again, we try to see the things that we missed or the things that we really enjoyed.

Also, when planning vacations, I look for the last minute deals on discount websites. I usually spend less than $300 for roundtrip tickets for 2 in the US.

Another vacation option is visiting family or friends. One of my favorite vacation spots is Hawaii. My uncle and his family are

laquindra

stationed there. Since Hawaii has nice weather year round, when plane tickets are low, I book a flight over. Since I stay with family, I don’t have to worry about hotel rooms (or expensive restaurants- my aunt cooks!)

I also attend free community events and frequently visit the parks.

Being a teacher and having summers off with an 8 year old son can be difficult. Because I have cut back on so many things, I feel my reward should be a little fun( which to me means- VACATION).

See? More good ideas. Thank you Laquinda and so very nice to "meet" you! (And thank you for teaching our kids.... sometimes that is not said enough.)

I was reading your post and it occurs to me a nice old fashioned picnic at the park would be fun. The last time our little family did such a thing was a couple of years ago, we'd gone to Heritage Park... I think we are overdue.

I work from home (since it's selling real estate I don't use much gas or paper for contacts anyway),

I quit wearing pantyhose (except for special occasions involving whipped cream and cherries..the organic variety),

I do not color my hair, brush my teeth or wash my underwear. (since no body will get close to me now it also saves on candlelit evenings and horse dovers.

Oh for Heaven's Sake. You ain't foolin' me, Bubba. (What took ya' so long to get here YD?)

You ARE a Southern Gent - the proof is in the Horse Doovers. I'm REALLY familiar with that term! :P

The Southern Gentleman's idea of a romantic dinner date: A 6-pack of RC Colas and some Moon Pies.

Last meteor shower we actually watched, we dragged out lawn chairs (along with the neighbors - oh just picture it) - sodas - and moon pies. We proceeded to spot bats, night birds, airplanes, a couple UFOs, the occasional shooting star, and enjoyed some sweet sugar buzzes. It was fun. ... and cheap.

I'll save ya' a seat next time YD. Even if ya' don't smell too fresh. :P

I might just have to try the cheap disposable razors on MY legs!

Seriously, though, here is something that I've tried with regard to personal grooming (yes, FF does make at least an attempt at good personal hygiene):

As much time as I have spent in hotels over the past three years, I have found that hand lotion makes a great substitute for shaving cream. I learned it through necessity once and I now have a whole drawer full of hotel hand creams. I haven't bought shaving cream in at least a year.

And I'm with thebradleys - we do "steak night" every couple of weeks. Fresh Market ribeyes (gilled a la FloydFreak) are ten times better than ANYTHING that you can get at Outback.

Speaking of meteor showers...I can't wait for the Perseids in August (the 12th). Such celestial happenings are truly spectacular up here in the country!

Woot! I got bookended by our guys! LOL

[sniff sniff] You DO smell nice, Floyd! :D

So a guy has made this "discovery" too - there is usually a wax or paraffin base to inexpensive lotions and conditioners that can make for a really smooth (no bumps, no nicks) shaving experience. Get a huge bottle at the local dollar store and you are SET! (Why pay $4-5 for a small shaving gel???)

Steak night... a little hand holdin'... nothing beats your own home and gardens for a romantic setting... a little sky show from The Man Above and a handful of posies scooped up impromptuly for the wife... Floyd, I dub thee Mr. Romance.

I am glad you said something about the Perseids. We may get another RC Cola and moonpie group together.

What's life if you can't laugh at your selves, right?

Well gee ya'll lets just hold us a get together at my house and sit out by my pool and FF and my hubby can grill some steaks and we'll be good to go. If my neighbours can bug the bejeezers outta me I will gladly return the favor. We can all pack us a few moon pies and we should be set. Since my whole back yard is fenced in don't have to worry about noisy people bugging us. Might wanna bring a few cans of mosquito repellent just in case my tiki tourches go out though. WHEEEEEE!!

Can I wear my panty hose, Jan? (after I shave with Freaks lotion of course).

R 'o C cola is was we called that delicious beverage. Did you ever pour a pack of salted peanuts in for a protein packed meal? topped off with the obligatory moon pie.

Being one with nature, and doing it with friends and loved ones, is the best this world has to offer bradley.

Often the simplest things are by far the best.

I do enjoy a nice glass of "red" so I'll bring the vino.

Y.D you can wear whatever your little heart or um, legs desires. Make sure you don't forget the mosquito repellent though. I have not so nice neighbours that have a nice swamp green in ground pool just two houses over so we don't EVER party without tiki tourch's and mosquito repellent. The mosquitos would be the ONLY one's enjoying our party otherwise. UGH!!

Yep gettin' back to the basics.

We have watched Good Day Tampa Bay and Fox News 13 since it became Fox many, many years ago. I've lived on this coast since 1982 but hail from Horse Country, TN. In RL I not only run two websites, but am researching a compilation work for publication (I can disappear for days in my books!) I work with wildlife (naturally Cynthia Smoot is one of my fave journalists!) and I like to participate in the "wildlife" here on the Blogs - a little human interaction is a refreshing change on occasion.
