He said that he will not drill for oil because it will take seven years. With this logic im surprised he's not smoking or not watching what he eats. Now if anybody remembers, when bush first came into office he tried to have the US drill for oil, but congress said it would take to long. this was all under going about two and a half dollars a gallon ago. How are we going to replace the 1.5 million gallons of oil a day from mexico?

All things come at a price. Don't forget the reason why the ban on offshore drilling passed with bi-partisan support shortly after the 70's oil crisis.

The ban followed an oil shortage due to the embargo. Gas hit record prices and families had to ration their usage. I remember my parents telling me how they could only go to the pumps on certain days because of fuel rations. There must have been some pretty terrible disasters on Gulf oil platforms for a ban on offshore drilling to get enacted less than a decade after that. Oh, yea there were.

And now we are getting the same message: drill, drill, drill. And with today's technology, there is virtually no chance of an impact to the environment. Familiar words for familiar times. Do we have to let all of history's lessons be repeated?

Maybe we can try looking for another solution to the same problem.

Frankenberry I do not know where you are getting your info but the reason for the offshore drilling ban is the same today as it was in the 70's ECO-TERRORIST !!!! The major oil spills in the Gulf have come from tankers running aground or into another ship.During the two CAT 4 to CAT 5 hurricanes in the gulf the only oil spilt was from tankers all the oil platforms did exactly what there were designed to do NO LEAKS.Right now as I write this blog MEXICAN oil rigs are leaking into the Gulf not US rigs,so maybe all the ECO-TERRORIST should cross the border and protest them.We have another situtaion brewing in the Florida Straits were Cuba has leased drilling rights the Chinese and we know how eco-friendly they are don't we.So Iguess we just sit on our butts till everbody else in the world is drilling in the Gulf and we are broke. Some of you ppl just have no clue as to what is going on around you,if had a real major conflict to start any time soon we would be screwed as in no fuel for our military.I guess we could put solar panels or wind sails on our tanks.

I believe this may be the instance that you are talking about: http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2007-10-24-mexico-oi

It doesn't take too much research to find out that the possibility of an oil spill from offshore drilling is all too real. And it only takes one spill to completely destroy Florida's coast. Here is an article from someone in Texas discussing the tarballs that frequently wash up on their beaches: http://www.texasmonthly.com/ranch/readme/tarball.php

Theipp, if I'm not mistaken, it was a Republican Congress that told Bush it not only would take to long, but was not good for the environment.

McCains solution: Instead of finding an alternative, he just changed his mind. Maybe we can fix it in a decade or so. I retired from the Marines and moved to Florida because I love boating and scuba diving.

Shorty...There are many documented cases of oil spills from drilling rigs, all you have to do is look. Keep in mind, it's not just oil you have to worry about. Although none major, all it takes is one. I don't suggest we sit on our butts and do nothing, my suggestion is we go above and beyond, and find an alternitive.
